2005-2012 Ford Focus Hatchback
The Good: Driving dynamics, diesel pull, versatile
The Bad: Less room, flimsy interior, 6-speed MT not traffic friendly
The Say: An outstanding hatchback, despite the less roomy interior and cheesy interior.

2008-2012
Vehicle Overview
Depending on what part of the globe you live in, the Focus replaced the Escort for European and North American markets in 1998 while Asia and Oceania got this one to replace the Laser later on. The Philippine market got this one in late 2005 as a successor to the Lynx line, which was first sold in 1999. Similar to its replacement, the Focus is assembled locally and is exported to our ASEAN neighbors.
Hatchback models are initially available with a 2.0 gasoline engine but later models gain a 1.8 gasoline and 2.0 diesel engines. All of these models accelerate fine but choosing the 2.0 models, regardless of fuel type, gives you more power on tap. Despite sharing a platform with the Mazda 3, the Focus is heavy which gives it a more comfortable feeling inside (at the expense of fuel economy) while being an enjoyable vehicle to drive since it glides and slides gracefully.
Interior-wise, the color scheme is a black/beige motif with touches of chrome and wood. Similar with its platform-mates, the Focus also suffers from a cramped interior.
What Should I Get
From 2005 until October 2008, the Focus hatchback is available in three variants starting with the basic model which is the 1.8 Trend, made available in October 2007 that gets the 123hp 1.8, all power features, CD player with auxiliary jack, alarm, keyless entry, ABS brakes, immobilizer, rear folding seat, and rear aircon vents. The original model is the 2.0 Sport that was first launched with a 143hp 2.0 gasoline engine and adds front airbags, reverse parking sensors, front fog lamps, leather seats, body kits, power driver seat, and sun roof (last three items removed in August 2007). Introduced in 2010 is a diesel version of the Sport which gets a 134hp 2.0 diesel engine but only available with a manual transmission (the only variant in the hatchback range to have one).
An update in November 2008 resulted in several equipment changes from previous models while retaining the same variant designations. First is the Trend that has the 1.8 engine, driver airbag, ABS brakes, 60/40 fold rear seat, all power features, CD player with auxiliary jack, front fog lamps, rear aircon vents, alarm, keyless entry, and immobilizer with a passenger airbag added in July 2010. Going for the Sport gives you an option between a 143hp 2.0 gasoline or a 134hp 2.0 diesel engine but all models gain reverse parking sensors, power driver's seat, automatic climate control, and steering wheel audio controls with rain sensing wipers and auto on/off headlamps added in July 2010. The only difference between them is that gasoline models get fabric seats and an ordinary automatic transmission while diesel ones have leather seats and a powershift transmission.
If you want this car, stick to the lower engine models since the 2.0 gas is costly to fill up while the diesel will require you to travel more to recoup your expenses.
How Much Would It Cost Me
We will tell you this one straight: this vehicle has a gas guzzling (except perhaps for the diesel) nature even for the lower engine displacement models. Parts availability, despite being locally assembled, isn't that widespread like those of the Japanese competition. Do take note of the following problem points: air-conditioning, alternator, power door locks, and for the diesel, the powershift transmission.

Similar to its replacement, the Focus is assembled locally and is exported to our ASEAN neighbors.
Sedan models are initially available with a 1.8 gasoline engine but later models gain a 1.6 and 2.0 gasoline and 2.0 diesel powerplants.
Interior-wise, the color scheme is a black/beige motif with touches of chrome and wood except for the 1.6 Trend, which does not have the last two. Similar with its platform-mates, the Focus also suffers from a cramped interior.
What Should I Get
From 2005 until October 2008, the Focus sedan is available in three variants starting with the basic model which is the 1.6 Trend, made available in January 2006 that gets the 106hp 1.6, all power features, CD player with auxiliary jack, alarm, keyless entry, ABS brakes, driver airbag, immobilizer, rear folding seat, reverse parking sensors, and rear aircon vents. Added in August 2007 is a Trend model that gets a 123hp 1.8 engine and only paired to a manual but loses the airbag and parking sensors. The top end Ghia can be had with an automatic, adds dual airbags, parking sensors, front and rear fog lamps (lower models have theirs at the back), power driver seat, leather seats, automatic climate control, and steering wheel audio controls.
An update in November 2008 had a reshuffle in variants which resulted in several equipment changes from previous models. First is the Core (renamed to Style in February 2009) has the 1.8 engine, driver airbag, ABS brakes, 60/40 fold rear seat, all power features, CD player with auxiliary jack, and can be distinguished by its black door handles. Next is the Trend that adds front fog lamps, rear aircon vents, alarm, keyless entry, and immobilizer with options such as a passenger airbag added in July and automatic transmission in April 2010 respectively. Going for the Ghia of this version adds a 143hp 2.0 gasoline engine, reverse parking sensors, power driver's seat, leather seats, automatic climate control, and steering wheel audio controls with rain sensing wipers and auto on/off headlamps added in July 2010. Introduced in 2010 is a diesel version of the Ghia which gets a 134hp 2.0 diesel engine.

2004-2014
Vehicle Overview
Spanning over 10 years, the N16 Sentra is based on the Bluebird Sylphy which replaced the N15 Pulsar in Japan and the B14 Sentra locally that had used a bevy of names such as Sentra, Sunny, Almera, and Pulsar depending on where you live. While it was replaced in 2005, other countries had this for a little longer. For the Philippine market, 2001 to 2004 models carry the Exalta moniker with later ones dropping it.
First models utilize either a choice of 1.5 or 1.6 engines which both run perfectly fine without drama. A 1.3 engine debuted in November 2002 that isn't good when driven hard thanks to a heavy body (unless you are lazy to shift gears, skip the automatic if you can) and a 1.8 that has a relaxed personality. Long drives will result to a comfortable cabin thanks to a suspension set-up but steering isn't tops though. We'd go for models with ABS brakes since they have short stopping distances.
If you think that this vehicle is big outside, no thanks to its wheelbase it suffers a small cabin which limits comfort to four people inside although trunk space is cavernous though. Depending on the variant, the interior range from the basic to the luxurious and tacky.
What Should I Get
June 2001 to January 2004 models have the Exalta name, and had different variant names. Made available in 2002 is the basic GX which gets a 94hp 1.3 engine, alloy wheels, power steering and door locks, and a cassette tuner as standard. The original variants start with the DS that gain a 103hp 1.5 engine, power windows and mirrors, automatic climate control, and reverse parking sensors. Next is the LS that can be had only with a manual adds a driver's airbag, rear sunshade, and speed sensing door locks while the GS (renamed to GS Superio in March 2002) adds ABS brakes, fog lamps, hands free phone system, and is only available with an automatic. Going for the GS Grandeur adds leather seats, steering wheel controls for the audio system, pop-up LCD monitor, and for some units, a sunroof.
Those wearing the Sentra badge had different variant naming and equipment, which we will expound on them. The GX still has a 1.3 engine but gives you an option between alloy (for models with power features) or steel wheels (manual only), power operated windows and door locks (early automatics have this option, with manuals gaining them in October 2008) or manually adjusted ones while standard amenities regardless of the transmission include power steering, and for October 2005 up models, CD player. The GX-S, briefly made available from 2010 to 2011, adds body color door handles and mirrors as opposed to the black of the GX, and two more speakers at the back while retaining the features of the GX Power models. The GSX adds the 1.6 engine, leather seats (August 2005 to 2008 for automatics then transferred to the manual later on), power mirrors, and automatic climate control. The GS adds ABS brakes, driver airbag, reverse parking sensors, speed sensing door locks, alarm, keyless entry, and immobilizer plus it can be had with an automatic. Going for the 180GT gives you the 129hp 1.8, passenger side airbag, fog lamps, and a CD changer.
We recommend, if you can hunt for one, going with a 1.6 engine.
How Much Would It Cost Me
Since this vehicle had a long run plus its stint as a taxicab, parts are spread out and widely available. If you aim an Exalta GS Grandeur check for the sunroof's operation and for most, the suspension which may bottom out especially if the vehicle is full. Other niggles to watch out include the MAF sensor especially it will result to poor performance if it becomes dirty and interior build quality isn't excellent. Avoid ex-taxi units, especially those that had traveled a lot.

The Bad: The rest of the package is old
The Say: Forget about the badge, you get more room for sub-compact price.

Car Features - Cars Indonesians Can Buy That Filipinos Can't (And Vice Versa)
Among our ASEAN neighbors, Indonesia has the largest population and the largest car market in the region. The 249 million population scattered in nearly 18,000 islands whose location is just along the equator, making it a factor for a huge car market. Compared to the Philippines, we just dwarf them but in terms of variety, we do get a lot.
We shall list some cars that are sold in Indonesia but is not available in the Philippines (and we list cars from our archipelago that is not marketed there). The list does not include the likes of engine and body configurations for both countries which will make it very long and we would only focus on popular brands, leaving out small players such as luxury brands and some unknowns. Lastly, this list does not include brands in general that are available in either country, which makes it unfair.
What we (Philippines) don't get...

Quickie Used Car Review - Mazda 3 Sedan (2004-2012)
2004-2012 Mazda 3 Sedan
The Good: Drives like a sports car, and residual values are low
The Bad: The backseat is tight and there is no manual transmission available

2007-2012
Vehicle Overview
Replacing the Protege/323/Famila lineage, the Mazda 3 continued its sporty heritage for a low price. It was one of Mazda's blockbusters with the brand's return in 2004 and outsold the Ford Focus throughout, despite being assembled in one facility.
Two engines are standard throughout selling life: a 1.6 which becomes lively when driven at 2,000rpm that is useless for city driving or when saving fuel and a 2.0 that performs well since it does not struggle with the vehicle's weight. It is a driver's delight, especially that the controls are focused towards the driver, steering feedback is excellent, and a compliant suspension.
If you plan to buy this car, one downside is a cramped back seat, which some passengers may complain. Otherwise, this wears a black interior than the beige of some luxury tuned rivals.
What Should I Get
Sedan models get three variants for sale, unlike the hatchback's one model. The S has a 104hp 1.6 engine, all power features, a driver's airbag, CD player, alarm system, keyless entry, immobilizer, steering wheel controls, 60/40 fold rear seats, and MP3 function (last two items became standard in May 2006). Choosing the V adds ABS brakes, a passenger airbag, fog lamps, and an automatic climate control. Going for the R adds the 139hp 2.0 engine, leather seats, sun roof, body kits, and rain sensing wipers.
How Much Would It Cost Me
Since this vehicle sold well, parts availability is excellent plus maintenance costs are similar (albeit higher) than Japanese rivals but fuel consumption is poor since all of them come with an automatic transmission as standard. If you want one, watch out for the following pet peeves: rust, transmission system that may give up, and the suspension.

Unlike its sedan brother, only one engine is available: a 1.6 which becomes lively when driven at 2,000rpm that is useless for city driving or when saving fuel.
What Should I Get
Only one variant is available for the hatchback, unlike the sedan that gets three models for sale. From 2004 until May 2007, it is only offered in S variant that gets a 104hp 1.6 engine, all power features, a driver's airbag, CD player, alarm system, keyless entry, immobilizer, steering wheel controls, 60/40 fold rear seats, and MP3 function (last item became standard in May 2006). An upgrade in 2007 became the V that adds ABS brakes, a passenger airbag, fog lamps, and an automatic climate control.

2014-2015
Vehicle Overview
The first iteration of the Elantra is based on the Mitsubishi Mirage with succeeding versions are developed hands-on by Hyundai. 90s based models aren't remarkable (which the Philippine market got) and those developed at the turn of the millennium are better. What we are reviewing here is the fifth generation Elantra, which became popular for the brand locally.
Complementing its good looks are two engine options - a 1.6 and a 1.8 - which are powerful on the lower spectrum while having enough muscle for longer drives. Handling is on the balanced side but has a tendency of being heavy feeling due to a standard motor driven power steering with 2014 models gain Hyundai's Flexsteer that has three modes for the driver to use. Although the ride quality is smooth, driving this on poorly made roads will treat you for a rough ride.
A far cry from its predecessors plastic-filled interior (though cheap touches remain) is a dashboard that will make you mistaken for something that is expensive. Some models, depending on the year, get a fully integrated sound system. It is spacious inside however some passengers may complain for the lack of rear headroom due to the swoopy styling.
What Should I Get
We shall begin with the 2011 to 2013 model variants with two only offered. The base GL has a 129hp 1.6 engine bundled with all power features, airbag (manuals have their's on the driver side while automatics get two), ABS brakes, CD player with USB and auxiliary jack, alarm, keyless entry, and speed sensing door locks. The GLS would add the 148hp 1.8 engine, parking sensors, 60/40 fold rear seat, fog lamps, and steering wheel controls for the audio system. An update in January 2014 had the variants renamed with two more added with the E being the base model that has the 1.6 engine, all power features, a driver's airbag, keyless entry, CD player, and audio controls in the steering wheel. Next is the S that adds a passenger side airbag, ABS brakes, and alarm system while the 1.6 L gains parking sensors, reverse camera, 60/40 fold rear seats, push button start, rear aircon vents, and navigation system. The icing of the cake is the 1.8 L that adds stability control, leather seats, automatic climate control, and rain sensing wipers. There is no need to look beyond the 1.6 models since they are more than enough and we recommend either the GL (for 2011 to 2013 models) or the S (2014 to 2015) if you want one.
How Much Would It Cost Me
Keeping this baby wouldn't cost you an arm and a leg especially that maintenance costs are similar to Japanese rivals and parts are widespread. Although not much problems were reported, one thing to watch out for is the clock-spring in the steering system, which makes noises while steering.

2014-2016
Vehicle Overview
Developed at a time when car manufacturers are doing their cost cutting measures, the ninth generation Civic became smaller than its replacement plus with this being a victim of the global financial meltdown, reviews in North America were less than stellar which prompted to release a "quick fix" a year later. Do take note that ASEAN specifications are different from what North America receives.
Sporting the same engines from the FD model, both of these are capable just like any Honda engine but features an ECON driving mode which makes adjustments internally to further improve fuel mileage. Unlike the sporting nature that previous models are known for, this one has a more relaxed tune with more comfortable seats but going faster gives you a lot of road noise.
Inside, the interior is the opposite of what the previous model is known for. The dashboard theme is subdued (although the two-tier instrumental system is retained) than daring and wrapped with cheap plastics. Spacewise, although shrunken, is still decent just like its rivals.
What Should I Get
First made available in February 2012 is the Japan sourced EXI which rides on a 139hp 1.8 gets items which were later deleted from succeeding models including (with some introduced later in a facelift) side airbags, cruise control, back-up camera, and stability control. July 2012 saw the introduction of Thailand sourced models starting from the base S which at least has all power features, ABS brakes, front airbags, ECON button, multi-information display, alarm, keyless entry, auxiliary jack, and USB with fog lamps added in a May 2014 update. Next is the E that adds side mirror lights and paddle shift with later ones add fog lamps, cruise control, 60/40 fold rear seats, push button start, and Modulo body kits. The EL, which is the top model, adds a 153hp 2.0, leather seats, and automatic climate control with later iterations add side airbags, rain sensing wipers, and auto leveling headlamps.
How Much Would It Cost Me
Not much problems were reported from this vehicle since it is not that of a big seller when compared to the previous models so were going to assume it is trouble free. Maintenance costs are similar to rivals but Honda has maintenance intervals every 10,000kms.

Latest vehicle profile: Mitsubishi Lancer EX

2008-2012
Vehicle Overview
Dubbed as the Cedia body (a portmanteau of the words century diamond) when it was released in November 2000 in Japan, it didn't arrived in Philippine shores until February 2003 by which it replaced the long overdue Lancer "pizza" body. This one didn't have the coupe body, as all Lancers were in sedan configuration. Although the newer Lancer EX debuted in 2008, the GLX and GLS stayed as a low cost alternative until 1.6 models of the EX in 2012.
The base engine is a 1.6 which is entirely different from its predecessor with 1.8 and 2.0 engines were launched later on but without any MIVEC technology in it. All engines are capable in their own right and moves this vehicle without any fuss. Apart from a manual, a continuously variable transmission became an option and gear shifts are seamless. Handling is fine and braking is decent for models with ABS brakes.
Compared to its replacement model, this one had increased dimensions inside which means more space for people and built quality is improved. Dashboard layout is, of course, logically placed which is one good thing.
What Should I Get
The Lancer hierarchy starts with the GLX (briefly named the GL from June to October 2006) which has the 108hp 1.6 engine paired to a 5-speed manual, all power features, CD player, alarm, and keyless entry with later models gaining an auxiliary jack (May 2007), MP3 function and dual airbags (2008). Next is the GLS which can be had in either transmission (it became CVT exclusive from May 2004) and adds a driver airbag (became two in 2008) and for later units, back-up sensors. Going for the MX gives you reverse sensors, dual airbags, LCD monitor, leather seats and 2004 models having DVD/VCD function and ABS brakes. The MX Limited gains a 121hp 1.8 engine plus a handsfree phone kit whle the its successor, the GT adds body kits but wears fabric seats, an all black interior, and a 4-speed automatic transmission. Do take note that the first release models of the Lancer lack ABS brakes and wear on rear drum brakes, in which we recommend going for a May 2004 model that benefit from all disc brakes and there is no need to look beyond the 1.6 engine.
How Much Would It Cost Me
Maintenance costs for this vehicle would play similarly to rivals of the same time. Fuel consumption is high for the upper engines compared to the 1.6 models. One thing to watch for is the CVT transmission, especially the usual rubber band effect in which the transmission is afflicted of.
