Car Features - Cars Malaysians Can Buy That Filipinos Can't (And Vice Versa)

Comprising of two islands (the so-called mainland and Borneo), Malaysia is home to two car makers: Proton and Perodua. Other than that, this South East Asian country has a variety of car makers just like ours and with a population of 29.72 million people, they do have lots of choices. When it comes to sales, they rank third behind Indonesia and Thailand.

Given that they have nearly 30 plus brands available, there are some models that can be accessed by Malaysians that we will list in this article (and list models that they don't get but we have). The list does not include the likes of engine and body configurations for both countries and we would only focus on popular brands, leaving out small players such as luxury brands and some unknowns.

In case you are wondering, we will not be including Proton and Perodua in this list, as cars in what we don't get would be rebutted by cars we have but they don't get.

What we (Philippines) don't get...

Quickie Used Car Review - Toyota Alphard (2010-2015)

2010-2015 Toyota Alphard

The Good: Top levels of comfort and luxury in a practical package

The Bad: Strained 2.4 engine for such size

The Say: The Lexus of all minivans.

Go For: 3.5 V6
Avoid: 2.4

Price Range: P1,850,000-P2,600,000

2010-2015

Vehicle Overview
Positioned as the higher end model in Toyota's van line-up, the Alphard was a response to the success of the Nissan Elgrand, another van aimed at the upper class. Although the Philippine market had its exposure of the first generation model through grey imports from Japan, it was officially sold by Toyota in August 2010 due to requests from its customers who had seen this van in certain Asian countries.

Philippine market Alphards get two engine (both are gasoline, by the way) options: a 2.4 which was first made available and that struggles at weight and a 3.5 V6 that best suits the vehicle's mass. With its narrow body but tall headroom, this is one van that is easy to drive while giving its occupants more room to breathe in. The driver has a higher seating position coupled with large windows while the passengers get comfortable seats similar to an airplane but the ride can get choppy at certain situations.

Seven people are welcome inside the vehicle, since the middle row are captains chairs clad in leather with ottoman and foot rest which reminds you of business class flights. First two rows can adjust their seats using power controls while those at the back have to use manual adjustment. While interior quality is top notch, some parts from low end Toyotas are evident.

What Should I Get
Regardless of engine, all Alphards get the following amenities: seven airbags, ABS brakes, stability control, fog lamps, clearance and back sonar, headlamp washer, sun roof, power seats for first and second row, leather seats, cruise control, mood lighting, power sliding doors, Nano-E technology in its air conditioning, DVD player, and engine immobilizer. The main difference lies on the forward gears on its automatic transmission, the 2.4 has four while the 3.5 gets six plus the top end model gains a navigation system.

Our pick is the 3.5 V6, despite the fuel economy penalty but then, with this car aimed at the high end crowd, we suppose you have the resources to refuel this vehicle.

How Much Would It Cost Me
Since this is a high end van filled with electronic gadgets, do take a look if these work such as the sliding doors whose mechanism may fail and the seats that may malfunction. For any van, have a peek on the brakes and the sliding doors. Do not expect maintenance levels similar to a Hyundai Grand Starex since a V6 gasoline resides under the hood.

2009-2015

Vehicle Overview
While the wagon body of the Legacy was first sold locally, it was only in 2006 that a sedan body was unveiled for the first time and for the 2010 model year, it would be redesigned and offered the second time around. Do take note that the sedan was marketed until March 2015, whereas the wagon got killed in November 2014 and that would be the last of its kind.

Only one engine is offered: a 2.5 4-cylinder that is turbocharged and paired to a regular automatic. While you may lament that it lacks V6 power, this one has a broad torque curve which means that power can be achieved as early as 2,500rpm with boost 200rpm later and full blast at the 4,000rpm range. Getting behind the wheel, it still has that fun to drive personality which Subarus are known for and a switch (Sport gives you more fun while Sport Sharp is hardcore) comes standard that adjusts to your driving needs. Before we leave this paragraph, all wheel drive comes standard.

Like most rivals from East Asia, rear space is habitable which is complemented by an interior full of high quality materials. One thing to know is that this vehicle utilizes an electronic parking brake rather than the conventional one that others use.

What Should I Get
Only one model is available, the GT for the sedan configuration. This one comes with a 261hp 2.5 paired to an all wheel drive system, six airbags, ABS brakes, traction control, hill holder, front and rear fog lamps, HID headlamps with auto on/off, pop-up headlamp washers, sun roof, automatic rain sensing wipers, leather seats, front power seats with memory function, cruise control, paddle shift, 60/40 fold rear seat, automatic dual climate control, alarm, keyless entry, and immobilizer.

How Much Would It Cost Me
Maintaining one would cost you more than the competition especially that Subaru is known for their pricey maintenance costs and their standard all wheel drive system would result to poor fuel economy. Pet peeves include power windows that malfunction and the transmission although it is better to check out some electronic parts and the turbo.

2010-2015

Vehicle Overview
Previous Carnival models had only size available and for the Philippine market, the usage of both Carnival and Sedona nameplates and the availability of diesel and gasoline engines. The first generation Carnival enjoyed its success through grey market imports until Kia officially sold this vehicle in 2000.

For the first time, the second generation model had both short and long wheelbase models which our local market got. Only one engine is offered: a 2.9 diesel that had seen usage from the older model but upgraded with more power and equipped with CRDi technology. Despite its heavy body, this van can pull well even if its fully loaded or not and it is stable on high speeds. It is one comfortable van, which is a plus side although handling isn't that precise but you shouldn't expect too much.

Obviously, long wheelbase models gain more space than their short wheelbase counterparts with enough room to breathe in the third row. LWB models have a 60/40 fold third row seat and the second row (for all models) can be flipped forward or removed altogether. Eight people can be accommodated inside, regardless of wheelbase size. Interior quality is tops but some low end feeling materials can be seen.

What Should I Get
When it was first launched in May 2007, it was offered in LX short wheelbase and EX long wheelbase until an EX short wheelbase (added in October 2007) and LX long wheelbase (became available in October 2008) were added. A late 2010 update had the Carnival line-up simplified to two models: LX SWB and EX LWB. LX models come with a 158hp 2.9 engine, all power features, driver's airbag, ABS brakes, fog lamps, steel wheels, CD player with MP3, and dual automatic climate control with the update had omitted the fog lamps and automatic air conditioning while adding the following: alloy wheels, passenger side airbag, reverse sensor, alarm, and keyless entry. Choosing the EX gains alloy wheels, leather upholstery, power folding mirrors and sliding doors with later units having power tailgate and Bluetooth while it was downgraded to cloth seats. We'd choose the longer models for their practicality and usability and the EX for the added features.

How Much Would It Cost Me
Maintaining this one will not dent your wallet especially that this one is diesel driven plus parts specialist for Korean cars are anywhere. Pet peeves for this vehicle include the clutch for the LX SWB and the power amenities (sliding doors, tailgate) found on EX models.

Vehicle Overview
Replacing the Cefiro line in Japan, the Teana was first launched in 2003 although our market had to wait until 2007 for this one. It slots below the Skyline in the line-up and is intended as a sedan companion of the Murano crossover.

Just like the model it replaced, it still wears the VQ engine but with 2.3 liters and although it lacks power, it comes alive when driven above 3,000rpm. With available power on tap, driving this one is a challenge and it is one quick car despite power deprivation.

Even if interior space is roomy for all occupants, the interior felt dated in its launch date since the plastic material felt old although the matte finish is fine enough.

What Should I Get
JK models get a 171hp 2.3 V6, six airbags, ABS brakes, reverse sensors, power mirrors with fold function, dual automatic air conditioning system, 5.8 inch monitor, alarm, and keyless entry. Going for the JM adds a back-up camera, xenon headlights, sun roof, power driver's seat, leather upholstery, power rear sunshade, 7 inch monitor, and intelligent keyless entry.

How Much Would It Cost Me
Since this vehicle sold in low numbers, parts availability is limited although maintaining one is somewhat on the higher side due to the V6 engine. A recall in June 2016 was issued for a possible airbag defect.

Quickie Used Car Review - Nissan Urvan (1988-2015)

1988-2015

Vehicle Overview
This van was first launched in 1988 under the helm of Universal Motors Corporation, who took care of Nissan light commercial vehicles (until two Nissan distributors were merged into one in March 2014). While the L300 Versa Van was the one to beat, this one became an alternative among buyers. Both E24 (sold from 1988 until 2015) and E25 (marketed from 2002 til 2014) models were sold together but were packaged differently.

With this van made available since 1988, the most common engine available is a 2.7 diesel shared with other Nissan vehicles which runs on a basic fuel system that will give you worry free maintenance but is no match when compared to CRDI vans of the modern competition and complains when driven hard so use your overtaking skills wisely. For the E25 body, the standard engine is a 3.0 diesel derived from the Patrol but with less power which gives you decent acceleration than the older engine but it drinks a lot of gas under hard acceleration. Ride quality isn't bouncy, which is a plus point for people who get motion sickness.

A generic but inoffensive interior greets you. With a basic interior, some items are omitted in certain variants but then you are buying this to haul people and not impress a crowd. Models that seat 12 to 15 people all face front and have individual seat belts with 18 seater models have two front facing and the back sideways while the 21 are all side facing.

What Should I Get
Since 1988, the first model which was made available is the Shuttle which can accommodate 12 people, has power steering, alloy wheels, an audio system, vinyl upholstery, dual air-conditioning, and a 84hp 2.7 engine. That line was revised in 2005 with 15, 18, and 21 seater models (effectively dropping the 12 one) were launched with upgrades such as a CD player with MP3 and auxiliary jack, rear wiper and Wi-Fi connectivity system added later on. The Escapade, added in 2000 that rides on the E24 body, adds fabric upholstery, body stickers and can accommodate 12 people. Utilizing the E25 chassis is the Estate that adds a 105hp 3.0, all power features, alarm, keyless entry, immobilizer, and a tachometer. A limited edition CEO model carrying the Estate version adds rear swiveling seats with a center table.

How Much Would It Cost Me
No CRDi technology or computer box present, which means maintenance costs are very dirt cheap and this vehicle isn't picky in fuel. Parts are on the affordable side and any mechanic can fix this one with its easy maintenance. The only thing to inspect for is the transmission, especially if this one got abused. With Urvans mostly used for shuttling people, high mileage units aren't recommended so make sure you find one with a private ownership and not those that are rented out more often or have seen life as public transportation.

2010-2014

Vehicle Overview
Although it was launched in 2008, the Philippines had to wait two years later for this car to arrive. The 2.5 model arrived first in August of that year with a larger 3.5 launched in December.

Both engines have six cylinders and are from the VQ engine range which is popular for the brand. While the 2.5 may be lacking for some, the 3.5 packs a bunch of power and had seen usage on various Nissan models but with different tuning. With this one utilizes a continously variable transmission, it has the flexibility on choosing the appropriate gear whether driven lightly or hard. Although steering is fine, driving this one through road imperfections will transmit its impact towards the cabin.

Although the space inside may be less, the magic of ergonomics had done things well and made a way. This vehicle, for all variants, come with an all leather interior (in beige flavor) which may prove to be challenging to clean if you're a dirty type of person, so no eating inside.

What Should I Get
250XL models sport a 182hp 2.5 V6 plus amenities including dual airbags, ABS brakes, rear view camera, automatic headlamps, leather upholstery, power drivers seat, power fold mirror, dual automatic air conditioning system, navigation system, alarm, and keyless entry with push button start. Our choice is the 350XV that gains a 249hp 3.5, side airbags, traction control, sun roof, xenon headlamps, auto leveling headlamps, power front passenger seat, ventilated seats, ottoman seats at the back, power rear sunshade, steering wheel audio controls, and cruise control.

How Much Would It Cost Me
While the appeal lies on its bargain price, its low seller status makes parts limited that means you have to be careful on driving. Another thing to remember is the standard V6 engine which makes fuel consumption high, but if you can buy this type of car we are sure you can refuel this one. Problem points include an easy to wear interior and its suspension system.

2008-2015

Vehicle Overview
Nissan lacked an MPV in their line-up, especially that Japanese rivals were excelling in this aspect. With this in mind, the Grand Livina (which is a longer version of the Livina hatchback) was introduced.

For the Philippine market, a 1.8 gasoline was the only option for all models which can acquit itself even if the vehicle is full. Automatics work fine while the sole manual has six forward gears and is something fun to drive. Handling is on the light side thanks to its electric power steering.

Interior flexibility is excellent, especially that one can fold the second and third row seats to accommodate large and bulky items. The third row seat is best left for children, though.

What Should I Get
Elite models come with a 124hp 1.8 paired to a manual plus all power features, alloy wheels, keyless entry with panic button, rear wiper, and CD player. Luxury units can be had with an automatic and adds fog lamps and ABS brakes while the Elegance adds leather upholstery and six disc changer. In 2010, a Road Master edition was launched which gets a navigation system, DVD player, MP3 function with Ipod and auxiliary jack, Bluetooth, body kits, and heads up display. For automatic variants starting June 2012, Highway Star body kits were added.

How Much Would It Cost Me
Keeping this baby is somewhat higher than several brands but is not priced prohibitively. With this vehicle being discontinued recently, parts are somewhat available in specialist shops as well as Nissan's online part shop.

Vehicle Overview
Representing as the sixth generation model of the Camry, this version had two configurations: "regular" which are mostly sold in Asia, Russia, and North America while the "prestige" is sold as the Toyota Aurion alongisde the Camry although some countries get this one but badged as the latter.

Two engines are available and both of them have different traits - a 2.4 engine that is capable to carry the vehicle's mass and a 3.5 V6 that possess more power that uses the low end range. This vehicle begs for the passenger to be driven in, since it has a cushiest ride to begin and it hates curved roads since it drives likes a barge plus body roll is evident. Lastly, steering is on the light side which isn't inspiring for some.

Although silver and black hues come standard, wood trim dominates the dashboard especially that developers had a lot of love for it. Passenger space, especially at the rear, is excellent.

What Should I Get
The base model is now designated as the G which gives you a 165hp 2.4 paired to a 5-speed automatic, dual airbags, ABS brakes, front and rear sensors, fog lamps, auto off light system, rear sunshade, dual automatic climate control, power fold mirrors, steering wheel controls for the audio, aircon, cruise control, and MID, alarm, and keyless entry system. Striking a balance between usability and performance, our pick is the V that gives you wood accents, power seats at all sides, leather seats, power rear sunshade, immobilizer, and for August 2009 and up models, push button start. Going for the Q adds a 273hp 3.5, side airbags, stability control, adaptive front lighting system, auto on/off light system, rain sensing wipers, dual exhaust pipes, illuminated footwell entry, and push button start.

How Much Would It Cost Me
Yes, this is a Toyota but do not expect Vios or Corolla levels of maintenance; rather, compare this one to the likes of the Honda Accord or Nissan Teana of the same time. The oldest models are nearly 10 years old but the problem point lie on the interior trim and the SRS airbag light which turns on even if it does not have any problem. A recall in October 2012 involving its faulty power window master switch that may have a tendency to get stuck during operation is issued, so check if the part had been replaced.

Quickie Used Car Review - Mitsubishi Fuzion (2007-2015)

2007-2015 Mitsubishi Fuzion

The Good: Rides like a car, good headroom

The Bad: Drinks gas like there's no tomorrow, body roll

The Say: While it has some strengths, there are rivals that do the job better.

Go For: GLS Sport
Avoid: GLX

Price Range: P320,000-P650,000

Vehicle Overview
Riding on the chassis of the first generation Montero Sport, the Fuzion (sold as the Zinger in Taiwan) replaces the Freeca/Adventure line there. Locally, the Fuzion complemented the Adventure but the former was priced higher and rivals the Toyota Innova. Fate, as we know it, had things run the other way around especially that this one got killed while the older model succeeded and got updated later on.

Only one engine is offered: a 2.4 gasoline paired to an automatic transmission. This combination was said to limit its appeal to the buying public but having said that, this engine is torquey and smooth. Another advantage over other rivals is its car-like ride, which is on the comfortable side. However, body roll is present in certain situations.

Going inside, this vehicle rewards you with lots of space in all rows (the third row is best left for kids) and cargo space is excellent. Depending on the variant, one comes with a basic interior while one is fully kitted.

What Should I Get
Going for the GLX gives you a 134hp 2.4, alloy wheels, fog lamps, rear wiper, all power amenities, CD player with MP3 and USB function, alarm, and keyless entry. Our pick is the GLS Sport that adds dual airbags, ABS brakes, tire pressure monitor, reverse parking sensors, leather upholstery, luggage room lamp, automatic climate control, and 7 inch monitor with DVD player.

How Much Would It Cost Me
It is unfair to compare this one when it comes to maintenance costs to a Mitsubishi Adventure but it is the same with the Toyota Innova in gasoline form. Fuel consumption for this vehicle is somewhat on the higher side since a high displacement engine is standard. Two recalls were issued for this vehicle which involves a steering column intermediate shaft in March 2012 and a faulty airbag inflator in March 2016. Not much problems were reported for this vehicle, yet.

Quickie Used Car Review - Honda Accord (2008-2013)

2008-2013 Honda Accord

The Say: Can be your daily driver and at the same time, the sports car of your dreams.

Vehicle Overview
The eighth generation Accord started life in the form of the 2007 Accord Coupe concept displayed at the North American International Auto Show. This generation saw the increase in size for the sedan which was classified as a full-size while the coupe graduated to mid-size category and the discontinuation of the hybrid version. What we are reviewing here is the model developed for North America and parts of Asia (it is sold as the Honda Inspire in Japan) while Europe and its home country receives a different version.

Similar to rivals, two sets of engines were offered to the public. A 2.4 engine is more than enough for one's requirements while the 3.5 V6 has more power and at the same time, efficient since it will shut down half of its cylinders at low speeds but goes full blast all of them are activated. Driving this sedan is a delight, especially that it behaves well when driving although road noise comes standard at high speeds.

Since we had mentioned earlier that it had grew up in size, expect a roomy interior. The center stack controls for the audio system would be confusing for first timers but you'll get used to it later.

What Should I Get
Going for the S gives you a 178hp 2.4, front and side airbags, ABS brakes, stability control, front and rear sensors, automatic headlamps, single exhaust with finisher, power front seats, leather upholstery, folding rear seat, illuminated entry system, rear aircon vents, power rear sunshade, dual automatic climate control, six disc changer, steering wheel audio controls, alarm, and keyless entry. S-V models gains a 271hp 3.5, curtain airbags, sun roof, rain sensing wipers, dual exhaust pipes, memory function for the driver's seat. In May 2011, all models add paddle shift and in January 2013, an EX model (which is imported from Japan) featuring the same specifications of the S-V was added.

How Much Would It Cost Me
Maintenance costs for this vehicle is similar to Asian contemporaries but less than its German rivals. Things to check out are squeaky brakes and some power kits since they are nice to have but see them break, you'll cry for their costs.

Vehicle Overview
Replacing the Revo, the Innova continues the Kijang lineage whose roots trace although the latter vehicle was discontinued. It was the second member of the IMV platform family that was launched after the Hilux pick-up in the Philippine market.

Since this vehicle was sold for a decade (a thing that its predecessors didn't enjoy locally), this MPV had its fair share of exterior and interior updates which makes the vehicle new despite its age. J models are distinguished by their black door handles and mirrors and they do not get a rear wiper nor alloy wheels (they make do with hubcaps) while E models gain the last two items its lowly model don't have. G and V models are identical outside with their chrome door handles and side mirrors (which were upgraded to body color with side mirror signal repeaters in 2012). A limited edition Sport Runner with body kits based on the 2.5 E was added in January 2010 while the 25th Anniversary Edition (August 2013) and 1 Million Sales Edition (July 2015) can be distinguished by a badge.

Similar to the model it replaced, it has both gasoline and diesel engine options to choose from although they are entirely brand new. The sole gasoline engine is a 2.0 which is smooth but loses when it comes to fuel consumption (but still better than the Revo's fuel thirsty nature) while the only diesel option has 2.5 liters which does well despite the horsepower deficit and is leagues better than its decade old rivals. When it comes to riding this car, it will not give you any motion sickness and handling is ages ahead of its rivals.

Compared to its predecessor, the Innova's interior will remind you on what decade you are on especially that amenities brings you back to civilization. Driving position is high, which is an advantage with space for all rows roomy enough except for the third row for large people. Similar to the Fortuner, folding the third row is done sideways. Throughout the years, the interior had been updated with additional equipment to reflect market trends.

What Should I Get
All regular variants can be had with either a 136hp 2.0 gasoline or a 102hp 2.5 diesel (except for the E, which got a gasoline option in March 2008) so better choose your model well since they differ on what equipment they carry and manuals are available in all but the V and automatics can be ordered across the range except for the J. All models start with the J which gives you power steering, CD player with MP3 (auxiliary and USB were added later on), and vinyl seats with other goodies like airbags (driver in October 2009, passenger in February 2014) and ABS brakes added to the mix later on. Next on the list is the E which adds alloy wheels, rear wiper, power windows and door locks, and fabric seats with ABS brakes and airbags became standard later on. Our pick for the best balance is the G that gives you fog lamps, reverse parking sensors, wood accents, multi information display, power mirrors, alarm, keyless entry, and driver's airbag with ABS brakes, passenger airbag, steering wheel controls and automatic air conditioning system added in September 2008. Added in September 2006 is the V that gets middle row captain's chairs, leather seats, dual airbags, and ABS brakes with February 2014 adding Bluetooth and navigation system. Special edition models include the Sport Runner (based on the 2.5 E) adding body kits and different set of alloy wheels, 25th Anniversary Edition (derived from the G) which adds a badge, navigation system, and can only be purchased in white or brown, and the 1 Million Sales Edition (molded from the G) adds the same items from the 25th Anniversary except it for the addition of a rear spoiler and is only available in green.

How Much Would It Cost Me
Thanks to the badge, the Innova has low maintenance costs compared to several sophisticated rivals (such as the Kia Carens and Chevrolet Orlando) plus spare parts are widely available, due to its best seller status and its long run. Fuel consumption wise, diesels trump their gasoline counterparts. Alongside its IMV siblings, it has been recalled in April 2014 for a faulty spiral cable that may cause the airbag not to deploy in a crash which involved units built from 2005 to June 2010. Other things to look for are the rear suspension which tends to leak, EGR valve for the diesels if they are exposed to low quality fuel, and for early releases of the 2.5 (these models are distinguished by two lines than the mesh grille of later units), the suction valve tend to get stuck due to poor quality fuel. With lots of units available, do take time to be picky enough.

Quickie Used Car Review - Hyundai Sonata (2010-2014)

2010-2014 Hyundai Sonata

The Good: Comfortable ride, impressive handling

The Bad: Somewhat tight in rear headroom

The Say: Now one of the class leaders, not anymore the wallflower.

Avoid: 2.0 Limited

Full Review: Used Car Review - Hyundai Sonata (2010-2014)
Latest vehicle profile: Hyundai Sonata

See the different versions of this vehicle:
2010-2014

Vehicle Overview
The Sonata nameplate started as a luxurious version of the Hyundai Stellar, which the latter was produced until 1997. On the other hand, the Sonata was spun-off as a separate model later in 1988 with an emphasis (among Korean models) on more content for less money while later efforts were placed in reliability throughout selling life.

Previous iterations of the Sonata had an option for a diesel and V6 engines, which this generation ditched and all remained was the 2.4 (gasoline direct injection, hybrid, and turbo options are added) 4-cylinder, which would be the common engine among Philippine market units. A second option is the 2.0 that is used in the Tucson and both engines acquit themselves in everyday driving. Body roll is balanced and modulated while the ride quality is as soft as a pillow. If you're expecting sporty handling, this isn't the car for you.

Although some cheap touches remain, the interior is a step-up from previous models. Interior space is decent but the swooping style at the rear limits visibility. One good thing is that a full range of options are available depending on trim.

What Should I Get
Beginning from its 2010 launch, two models with a 176hp 2.4 engine were offered. The GLS has dual airbags, ABS brakes, stability control, hill start assist, power drivers seat, fabric/leather upholstery, automatic climate control, steering wheel controls including paddle shift, alarm, keyless entry, and rear aircon vents. GLS Premium and Limited (it has a 163hp 2.0 standard, which was added in August 2012) models add side airbags, panoramic sun roof, powered seat for the front passenger, all leather interior, and push button start.

How Much Would It Cost Me
Comparing to the Japanese mid-size rivalry, the Sonata's maintenance costs are similar to them although we would like to remind you that keeping one is much expensive than the Elantra. Although not much problems were reported, keep an eye towards the electronic components.
