After Brexit: British Auto Brand Sales In The United Kingdom In 2016

2016 Bentley Mulsanne Blue
Jaguar and Land Rover are owned by Tata. Mini and Rolls-Royce are in BMW's hands. Bentley belongs to Volkswagen. Vauxhall is a General Motors outlet.

You get the picture. The "British" auto industry of 2016 has very little to do with specific "British" auto bands and everything to do with a large number of automakers, including Nissan, Toyota, General Motors, and Honda.

Top 10 Best-Selling Cars In The UK In 2015
Here's The State Of The British Auto Industry In America

Nevertheless, there remains a unique Britishness when it comes to a consumer considering the purchase of a new Bentley or Aston Martin.

With the UK's Brexit vote ending in a Leave result – the United Kingdom has chosen to leave the European Union – we thought there was no time like the present to look at the UK sales performance of traditional British brands in their homeland.

For perspective, we've also added the market share achieved by these very same brands in the United States. U.S. figures for Aston Martin and Lotus are estimates from Automotive News. "Other British" is a classification our source, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, uses to refer, presumably, to UK sales of other niche British brands, including Rolls-Royce.

For the record, Ford UK sold 52,476 copies of the best-selling Fiesta in the first five months of 2016.

November 2012 United Kingdom Auto Sales By Brand

2013 Bentley Continental GT V8 Dragon Red
New car registrations in the United Kingdom rose 11% in November 2012. Ford remained on top with more than 21,000 sales and 14.2% of the market.

Six Volkswagen Group brands together owned one-fifth of the market. Audi's year-to-date lead over BMW shrunk to just 1481 units. Audi was 3842 sales ahead of BMW at the end of August.

Through the first eleven months of 2012, fewer than one-third of the brands in this table suffered year-over-year declines. Saab, Lotus, Proton, Maserati, and Perodua barely count. Aston Martin's 103-unit drop attracts attention, not because Aston Martin is such a mainstream brand, but because it's a British brand competing in its home market, a market that favours British brands.

Strange as it may sound to North American buyers, Mini outsold Honda in the United Kingdom in November. Land Rover did, too. Jaguar outsells Lexus by a 1.6-to-1 count. And Volkswagen-owned Bentley? With 0.07% of the UK new car market in November, Bentley's obviously a niche brand. But Bentley owned just 0.02% of the American new vehicle market last month. That says something about the love of Bentley in Britain.

43 brands are ranked by November 2012 UK sales volume in the table below. GoodCarBadCar ranked the UK's 10 best-selling cars earlier this morning.

November 2012 Top 10 Best-Selling Cars In The United Kingdom

2013 Ford Focus Estate Colorado Red
Clear and bright like a winter's day in Dover Denver, Colorado, is the obvious way in which the United Kingdom's new vehicle market bears no resemblance to the North American market. The Ford Fiesta is the UK's best-selling car this year, as it was last year, but in the United States, the Fiesta is the 72nd-best-selling vehicle.

Need more evidence? Consider the fact that three of the nameplates on this list of the UK's 10 best-selling cars in November aren't even available in North America.

Ford UK also sells a three-door Fiesta but doesn't sell the ugly Fiesta sedan. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class is still available as a wagon, or rather an estate, in the United Kingdom.

All of these cars can (and regularly are) purchased with diesel powerplants. And of the seven nameplates on this list which are on sale in North America, only one is sold here with a diesel engine: the Volkswagen Golf.

Of course, the Golf, sales of which rose 5% to 5165 units in November, can be had in the UK with a 168-horsepower diesel. In North America, diesel bhp tops out at 140. The Golf is America's 90th-best-selling vehicle, trailing the Mini, Fiat 500, Dodge Challenger, BMW X5, and Toyota Venza.

This list presents the 10 most popular cars in the United Kingdom from November 2012. Just as many of these cars posted huge year-over-year gains last month, the SMMT says the UK's overall market posted a 11.3% increase in November and is up 5.4% to 1.9 million sales through the first eleven months of 2012.

October 2012 United Kingdom Auto Sales By Brand

2013 Alfa Romeo Mito Alfa red
The SMMT says the UK auto industry recorded a 12% improvement in new vehicle sales in October 2012. Ford, Vauxhall, Audi, Nissan, Hyundai, Citroen, Kia, Skoda, Mini, and Fiat were the major brands which posted above-average year-over-year sales improvements. Through the first ten months of 2012, the UK market is up 5%. Twelve of the 15 leading brands have grown at a rate better than the overall industry.

If many of the UK's top brands are selling so much better than they were last year, why has growth been moderate? For one thing, at Vauxhall, the United Kingdom's second-ranked brand, sales have fallen by 6400 units. But lower-volume mainstream brands like Renault and Mazda, as well as semi-premium players like Volvo and Alfa Romeo, have been a real drag on the overall market's growth.

UK October 2012 auto brand market share chart
Click Chart For Larger View
The shrinking Renault lineup has generated a 26,059-unit decline. Mazda is down by 4302 sales. Volvo's 866-unit drop wasn't quite as meaningful but has still brought the Swedes down by 3.1%. Alfa's 3624-unit is dreadful for a brand which only sold 10,266 cars in the first ten months of 2011, but Alfa has very little with which to compete.

GoodCarBadCar has already published a list of October's 10 best-selling cars in the United Kingdom. Two-thirds of the Fords sold in the UK last month were Fiestas and Foci. Two-thirds of the Vauxhalls sold were Corsas and Astras. 52% of the Volkswagens sold were Golfs and Polos. And 72% of the BMWs sold were of the 3-Series and 1-Series variety. And the Qashqai represents half of all Nissan UK sales in October.

Brand rankings are in the table below. Click the market share chart for a larger view; it offers a different look at the industry, one which shows the VW Group collecting one out of every five UK new vehicle sales in October.
