Having already processed a slightly more interesting piece on Britain's best-selling cars, let's be mindful that January 2011 car sales Across The Pond can't correlate properly with January 2010 sales because of the UK's scrappage scheme from a year ago. British new car registrations were artificially inflated at this time last year, so lower sales volumes were anticipated in the first month of 2011.
The overall market dropped by 11.5% in January, thus, the leading automaker's 11.2% decline seems in accordance. Not surprisingly, the leading luxury automaker was BMW; Audi trailed only slightly. The UK's best-selling Japanese brand was Toyota, way back in seventh position. Apart from GM-run Vauxhall, the top British brand was Land Rover, an Indian-owned sport-utility builder. Then of course there's Mini, whose parent company is Munich-based BMW. Jaguar, a Tata property just like Land Rover, sat in 24th spot.
Eventually, a scroll down the list will reveal other British automakers, all owned by off-island companies like Proton (Lotus's parent), Investment Dar (Aston Martin's fund source), Volkswagen (Bentley's overlord), and China (MG's a part of the Nanjing/SAIC partnership).
Yup, it's America's Blue Oval atop the standings. Ford, to many Britons and Europeans, isn't just an American company. Multitudes of Ford Motor Company products have been developed and manufactured on their side of the Atlantic.
