Used Car Review - Honda HR-V (2000-2003)

For the very first day of July, Myk Belmonte features a rather unpopular SUV to see it more.

2000-2003 Honda HR-V

History
First conceived as the Wildful and Joyfull JW-J concept car displayed at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1997, the HR-V was placed in production a year later after its popularity. Based on the smaller Honda Logo while having lower emissions and unique styling, it can be (which is debatable) considered as one of the first crossovers out there.

The HR-V abbreviation stands for Hi-rider Revolutionary Vehicle, which Honda billed it so. Apart from Japan and some Pacific countries, it was also sold in Europe without a diesel engine. You may buy one in either a three or five door configuration until its 2006 discontinuation, with no direct successor.

While the CR-V was an immense hit in the Philippines back then, the HR-V was rather a novelty vehicle that sold less. First made available in the millennium year, the HR-V had fairly a limited market no thanks to a steep price tag due to its made in Japan status. Having no choice and after a limited run, Honda dropped this one in 2003.

Value and Costs
For just between P250,000-P370,000, the HR-V can be yours especially that you will also encounter first and some second generation CR-Vs in the classified block. If you really want one, a local unit is the way to go since there have been imported units from Japan which are converted and can be money pits if not properly maintained.

Since this vehicle isn't a best seller from the start, parts can be hard to come by quickly. With local HR-Vs having 4WD, checking out the drivetrain rigorously is the way. But then, this is a Honda which is reliable plus take care of this and you'll have years of worry free driving.

Exterior and Interior
Its exterior styling can elicit good or bad reactions, especially the boxy shape isn't for everyone and has its own purpose for that. Let me tell you one secret of this car: it boasts one of the best occupant and pedestrian protection ratings in an accident. The bumpers were raised high for aerodynamic reasons, the entire front end was designed to be less fatal for the pedestrian which means the hood absorbs the impact. Nice effort.

Sitting in the driver's seat is a convenience, especially the driving position is upright plus controls are logically placed and easy to reach. On the other hand, the rear seats aren't that comfortable for those who are beyond the average height but if you do not need to haul people all the time, the back seats can be stowed for maximum storage. Unlike other Hondas, the interior design wouldn't win any awards especially it looks plain to begin with.

Engine
Powering this crossover is a D16W1 1,590cc carrying 105hp at 6,200rpm and 138Nm at 3,400rpm that does not have any VTEC magic. Despite lacking that technology, it can accelerate with ease plus it has lower emissions that can outpace modern competitors. In other countries, a variant with VTEC is made available.

Driving Impressions
Despite lacking power, it is fun to drive which proves its sports name in the SUV plus it has a predictable steering. The suspension is well footed despite its tall height, the latter an advantage towards everyday driving.

Verdict
There are reasons for you to get and not to get the HR-V. If you want something unique while conquering the everyday rigors of work, this is for you. If you need something larger and powerful, consider other options.

The Good
  • Sporty than utility
  • Reliable
  • Raised height than other crossovers
The Bad:
  • Engine power can be lacking for some
  • No good off-road
  • Limited availability in the market
The Pick: Any maintained local unit

Car Features - The Best Sellers of 2000

Welcome to the year 2000, where everyone survived the Y2K bug, where the common phone is the 3310, and Facebook hadn't been invented yet. So, I saw this article from the Philippine Daily Inquirer and they revealed the top selling cars of the millennium year (per category). Not all car companies such as GM Automobiles (Opel, Chevrolet) are members of CAMPI, which do not report sales figures. Let us now go to a trip down memory lane.
AUVS
That category alone was the hottest segment in the market with most of them buying as a dual purpose vehicle which they use for family and business purposes. Seen here is the Revo, which incidentally is the best selling car in the country, for the second time around. Playing catch-up is the Adventure and Hilander while the old body Tamaraw FX managed to sell 950 units (probably to shuttle operators).

Toyota Revo
Units Sold: 11,818
Units Sold in 1999: 11,317
Difference between 1999: 4%

Mitsubishi Adventure
Units Sold: 6,824
Units Sold in 1999: 4,709
Difference between 1999: 45%

Isuzu Hilander
Units Sold: 4,303
Units Sold in 1999: 2,521
Difference between 1999: 71%

Toyota Tamaraw FX
Units Sold: 953
Units Sold in 1999: 1,038
Difference between 1999: -8%

Sub-Compacts and Compacts
The second most popular category, and the number one in this segment is the Honda Civic, which held against modern rivals and its swan song as it was to be replaced for 2001. Other best sellers include its smaller brother City, Nissan Sentra Exalta, and the Toyota Corolla.

Honda Civic
Units Sold: 5,456
Units Sold in 1999: 6,827
Difference between 1999: -20%

Toyota Corolla
Units Sold: 5,349
Units Sold in 1999: 5,548
Difference between 1999: -4%

Nissan Sentra
Units Sold: 4,853
Units Sold in 1999: 3,348
Difference between 1999: 45%

Honda City
Units Sold: 3,391
Units Sold in 1999: 2,443
Difference between 1999: 39%

Premium sedans
Ok, I would be renaming it from midsize since most of the cars categorized are sold in the region of a million pesos. During this period, Nissan's Cefiro was a favorite followed by the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry.

Nissan Cefiro
Units Sold: 686
Units Sold in 1999: 569
Difference between 1999: 21%

Honda Accord
Units Sold: 610
Units Sold in 1999: 770
Difference between 1999: -21%

Toyota Camry
Units Sold: 338

Luxury sedans
And you'll be here for a shocker, the best selling luxury car is from the land of ABBA. Volvo's S80 was the reason (they sold 112 of them) to be the market leader. BMW and Mercedes Benz were the follow up players in a rather discerning category.

*Pictures show the best seller per brand

Volvo
Units Sold: 225 (112 are S80's, 113 are split of other models)
Difference Between 1999: 40%

BMW
Units Sold: 158
Difference Between 1999: -56%

Mercedes Benz
Units Sold: 155
Difference Between 1999: 474%

Vans
This one is a rather silent category, but a smattering piece of vans that have different sizes and target markets are clamped together. The Hyundai Starex would have been the sure winner but with its grey market status, it is not counted here, thus the honor goes to the Toyota Hiace. Next to it are the Kia vans (Besta, Carnival, Pregio) and Mitsubishi vans (L300 and Spacegear) in the list.

Toyota Hiace
Units Sold: 3,076
Units Sold in 1999: 2,245
Difference between 1999: 37%

Kia Besta/Carnival/Pregio (combined)
Units Sold: 1,333

Mitsubishi L300/Spacegear (combined)
Units Sold: 1,041

Pick-ups
The Inquirer article lists them separately (4x2 and 4x4), so we will have them combined here if there is data available for both. Overall, the favorite back then is the Nissan Frontier with other sellers from Isuzu, Mitsubishi, and Ford. Toyota's Hilux is a floater here, but became a favorite later on.

Nissan Frontier
Units Sold: 2,326 (combined 4x2 and 4x4)

Isuzu Fuego
Units Sold: 2,014 (4x2 figures)

Ford F-150 and Ranger (combined sales, Explorer Sport Trac not counted)
Units Sold: 1,718 (combined 4x2 and 4x4)

Mitsubishi L200 Strada
Units Sold: 1,130

SUVs
Among the few competitors back then, SUVs are crammed into one category regardless of size and price. Despite the influx of new competitors, the small Honda CR-V became the favorite of Filipino buyers despite an expensive price tag. Other favorites include the *surprise* Ford Expedition (probably Brother Luistro's unit was counted) and the Mitsubishi Pajero.

Honda CR-V
Units Sold: 2,894
Units Sold in 1999: 2,947
Difference between 1999: -2%

Ford Expedition
Units Sold: 1,757

Used Car Review - Mitsubishi Spacewagon (1992-1999)

Before leaving the month of June, Myk Belmonte reviews a car which went way ahead of its time.

1992-1999 Mitsubishi Spacegear

History
First conceived from the SSW Concept Car displayed at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1979, the Chariot (known in its hometown) was placed into production in February 1983 using a variety of names such as Space Wagon, Nimbus, and Expo plus it was also marketed under the Dodge and Plymouth brands using the Colt Vista name.

Our model generation subject of discussion is the second generation Spacewagon which was more longer and taller while remaining in the same footprint making it qualify for Japanese regulations concerning vehicle size and engine displacement. This generation spawned offspring variants including the short-wheelbase RVR and a Korean version named the Hyundai Santamo.

The Philippine market had this MPV in 1992 through a 1.8 carburetor engine paired with a manual transmission. This concept went ahead of its direct (and much roomier rivals) from Nissan and Toyota, so to say that not all warmed on this concept. Until its 1995 update, it remained unchanged until 1999, where it was dropped on the line-up after without a direct replacement. Currently, the category where the Spacewagon used to compete is filled up with various contenders from Japan, Korea, and Indonesia.

Value and Costs
Currently, you may buy one between P90,000 for an early model possessing the carbureted engine to P220,000 for recent examples that carries an EFi engine and an optional automatic transmission.

Maintaining this rare vehicle would not require you to sell your kidney and liver, since parts are interchangeable with the Lancer and Galant of the same period. Pet peeves to look out are the suspension (which is notorious for the kalampag) and the steering assembly, plus check out for wear and tear present in the car.

Exterior and Interior
Staring at the Spacewagon will remind you that this vehicle is a product of the metal and grunge rock era. There is nothing to speak of its outside, but roofrails became standard in a 1995 update and the crystalline headlamps add style to the vehicle.

This is where the magic begins: inside. It can fit seven bodies in a compact body. We warn you immediately about this one, that there is no dual aircon function inside (that competitors do have) which makes passengers complain that it is hot inside plus the third row is cramped and kids are only welcome.

Engine
While the standard engine is a 4G93 1,834cc gasoline, horsepower and torque figures vary from one another in some periods. From 1992 until mid-1995, power is rated at 109hp and 154Nm with its fuel driven through a carburetor system. For those updated units (which can be identified through its three spoke wheels), adding electronic fuel injection resulted to having 115hp at 6,000rpm and 157Nm at 4,500rpm. So, the obvious choice is the later models since they do have enough power to pull the vehicle even when fully laden. Old models are poor picks since no thanks to a carburetor system, it would have a difficulty on speeding up plus it guzzles fuel like there's no tomorrow.

Driving Impressions
Since it has a height of a car, driving experience is similar to one. Visibility for a such a small MPV is excellent, with just a few blind spots present. When it comes to driving one, you will have a blast since it can reach triple digit speeds (unless you are passenger and cargo loaded, then performance would suffer) with ease.

Verdict
The Mitsubishi Spacewagon was purely a vehicle which came well ahead of time. A period where people preferred high raised wagons and minivans which can wade through floods. 15 years later after its original launch date, rivals that had more aircon vents and more power of the similar were made available to the public. Unless you really want something small or that nostalgic feeling, check first other rivals which may deem suitable for your needs.

The Good:
  • Seats seven people
  • Practical size
  • Cheap to buy
The Bad:
  • Carburetor engine can be overtaxed
  • Third row is cramped
  • A single aircon comes standard for a three row vehicle
The Pick: Models with the 1.8 engine

Used Car Review - Mercedes Benz M Class (2006-2012)

A luxury SUV for the school year? Not impossible, says Myk Belmonte as he gives you a suggestion.

2006-2012 Mercedes Benz M Class

History
Ok, so you would be criticizing me for featuring a second luxury SUV during the time when the kids troop back to school. Two years ago, we reviewed the E53 X5 in which people can choose between that or a brand new Montero Sport if given a chance (the results when I asked some people they'll go for a brand new Montero). While the used car world gives you lots of opportunities to drive those creatures without costing your image, there is a part of you which shouts maintenance costs without giving up your kids college funds.

Replacing the W163 M Class that was heavily criticized for its dubious quality is the W164 that was first made available in April 2005 as a 2006 model. Everything in the vehicle was totally new including the 7G-Tronic transmission, active curve illuminating lights, and more dimensions translating to more interior space. For the first time, AMG and hybrid engines debuted in this generation to provide consumers more options.

Locally, the W163 was launched by CATS Motors in December 2005 as a 2006 model alongside the W221 S Class and W245 B Class. Initially, the gasoline model was first made available with a diesel engine being available in 2010.

Value and Costs
Despite being an old model than the GLK, resale values of the M are identical to its small brother but then, the former has a cheaper price tag to begin with. As the drill, going with a pre-owned unit is the order of the day.

With this SUV packing tons of gadgetry inside, checking them one by one if they function well is a must. Also, maintenance costs between its European rivals are at par except for the LR which costs slightly more.

Exterior and Interior
Outside, the design just commands your attention with being overly styled that most competitors commit. The shape that is sculpted has better lines and a raked windshield that aids aerodynamics. AMG Sport models have the requisite AMG body kit with rear spoiler and 21 inch rims (as opposed to the 20 ones in the lower models).

Sad news for people who like placing their relatives at the back row: no more standard third row seat unlike the previous model, it has been relegated to the larger GL Class. Anyways, space inside the cabin is excellent and you'll love the comfortable aura provided by it. The interior is crammed with lots of toys including a button for the sunroof plus tons of hidden storage spaces (including the CD slot behind the COMAND screen). The biggest disadvantage is the shifter situated behind the steering wheel that is small (which you may mistaken it for a cruise control) and the cardinal rules: up to reverse, down to accelerate, and the middle is reserved for neutral.

Engine
Neither engine options that we will mention would disappoint you, so weigh in your requirements between the two. The sole gasoline option is the E35 3,498cc V6 having 272hp at 6,500rpm and 350Nm at 2,800-4,800rpm which provides you a smooth power delivery. On the other hand, picking the OM642 2,987 diesel with 224hp at 3,800rpm and 500Nm that is accessible at 1,600rpm which you will love for its available power and efficiency afforded by it.

Driving Impressions
Not anymore the agricultural tractor of the past, it now behaves as an E Class sedan which is a good thing. While we mention about the smooth power bandwith, its power steering is speed sensitive which means it is easily adapted. Apart from the smooth engine and transmission, all you have to do is to drive.

Verdict
There is nothing wrong with having a luxury SUV to school, unless you are receiving death threats in between. But if you are in the market for one (and you budget really dictates it), there is nothing wrong with the M Class, since this is a more improved model than the rushed replacement.

The Good:
  • High levels of quality
  • Great amount of space
  • High levels of engineering
The Bad:
  • You can't fit seven people in it
  • Good luck on the shifter
  • Maintenance costs will kill you
The Pick: ML350 CDI
