Car Features - Cars Thais Can Buy That Filipinos Can't (And Vice Versa)

Considered as the Detroit of Asia, Thailand nearly builds the cars you are driving locally ranging from sub-compacts to large pickups and SUVs. All manufacturers have their assembly plants and they export these not just in our region but nearly everywhere. While we have vehicle assembly here, Thailand's favorable tax incentives and business environment wins the hearts of car makers.

Since Thailand sells nearly 500,000 units in a given year, we would fish out vehicles that they get but in return, we don't have (and we list cars that is not marketed there). This list does not include the likes of engine (hybrid and CNG are popular there) and body configurations (for the pickup trucks in Thailand) for both countries which makes it very long and we would only focus on popular brands, leaving out small players such as luxury brands and some unknowns. With the country being the first place in ASEAN to have car launches which follows in other nations, vehicles that are expected to be launched locally on a later (with some unannounced) date such as the Mazda CX-3 and Honda BR-V are not included on this list. Note: Mazda had launched the CX-3 at the Philippine International Motor Show two weeks ago. Honda had previewed the BR-V at the same event with deliveries starting December this year.

In reality, Thailand moves more cars but they have lesser vehicles in their line-up compared to ours.

What we (Philippines) don't get...

Quickie Used Car Review - Nissan Frontier Navara (2007-2015)

2007-2015

Vehicle Overview
While the first generation Frontier became a best seller, rivals caught on by offering more power and torque through their CRDi engines, which was a trend in the mid-2000s. The response for this one is through the Frontier Navara which was larger and more powerful than the model it replaced.

4x2 and 4x4 models have different width and height sizes and although one engine is offered, their horsepower varies. The 2.5 diesel which comes standard have two power ratings: 142hp for 4x2 models and 172hp for 4x4 models. Either engine is capable of reaching as early as 2,000rpm which benefits fuel consumption. Driving this one will test your patience as it is long although steering is on the light side. An eight-cross member ladder frame gives the truck additional stability when needed.

One added benefit of the Navara is the car-like position, which is comfortable to be in complimented by easy to reach controls. One shift done is the 4x4 system which needs to be activated by flicking a knob below the climate control.

What Should I Get
Going with the Brute (added in 2011), which is the basic model available in both drive-train configuration, will give you a stick shift, alloy wheels, all power features, dual airbags, ABS brakes, CD player with MP3, and can be distinguished by their black bumpers. The 4x2 LE adds an option for an automatic transmission, fog lamps, chrome accents, step board, foldable rear seat, alarm, keyless entry, and the 142hp 2.5 engine. Its 4x4 counterpart, which became the GT-X in 2013 adds a 172hp 2.5 diesel, leather seats, and for the GT-X, touchscreen monitor with navigation system. Two special edition models which are based on the LE 4x4 include the Krome Edition in 2010 that adds chrome bits, bed cover, side mirror signal repeaters, and power fold mirrors while the TechXtreme of 2012 adds a navigation system and socket for wireless broadband. Going for the LE is more than enough as the two special edition models aren't best bargains.

How Much Would It Cost Me
Maintenance costs, when compared to other Japanese stalwarts, is somewhat same although on the higher side. One problem point to look at (which is serious) is the EGR system caused by mechanical failure and turbo.

Vehicle Overview
Larger than the model it replaced, the ninth generation Corolla debuted in 2001 for Asian markets outside Japan. The Corolla Altis name signaled the vehicle's upmarket intentions as it became the more luxurious variant over the pedestrian Corolla. For the Philippines, the lower model was targeted towards the fleet market.

With an attempt to move upmarket, two higher engines are offered - a 1.6 and the 1.8 - that are both brand new. These engines work well when driven on the low rpm range, a known trait of Toyotas, but they aren't the best when driven hard since they become noisy. Do take note that the 1.6 can be had in both manual or automatic, depending on the variant, while the 1.8 is exclusively automatics. Ride quality is excellent, even when driven on both sides of the spectrum.

Benefiting from the increased dimensions (the previous model suffered limited interior space), the Corolla Altis has enough space for five people. Controls are placed logically and within the reach of the driver. To separate the top end models inside, they receive wood panels.

What Should I Get
Deviating from three lettered variants, this one signaled the usage of single letters as the trim model of this vehicle. The base model is the J which has a 116hp 1.6 engine, all power features, alloy wheels, and CD player with later versions getting a 60/40 fold rear seat and MP3 function. Our pick is the E in 1.6 flavor that adds a driver airbag, ABS brakes, folding rear seat, alarm, and keyless entry while an equivalent model wearing the 145hp 1.8 engine, launched in January 2004, adds a passenger side airbag, front and rear proximity sensors, fog lamps, wood accents, and starting in 2006, leather seats. Added as a limited edition model in February 2006 is the S which is basically a J model that adds a driver's airbag, body kits, rear spoiler, mesh grille, alarm, and keyless entry. The top end model is designated as the G in both 1.6 and 1.8 engine options for public consumption. The 1.6 G, when compared to the E, adds a passenger side airbag, fog lamps, wood accents, and side skirts while the 1.8 G gains leather seats, cassette deck (replaced by a disc changer later on) with later models adding proximity sensors, power fold mirrors, and power driver's seat.

How Much Would It Cost Me
Its best seller status ensures you that parts are widely available and the badge gives you low maintenance costs when compared to same time rivals (but not to Big Body Corolla levels). This vehicle has its fair share of problems which includes power door locks and windows which does not function well in certain times, the oil drain plug in the engine for 1.6 models, and for J models, weak air conditioning due to Sanden components as the upper models utilize Denso ones. With a number of them in the used car market, be picky enough.

Quickie Used Car Review - Mitsubishi Strada (2006-2015)

The Good: Great amount of space inside, available diesel engines (naturally aspirated and with VGT) in the used car market, rides like a car

The Bad: Soft suspension, soft looks, somewhat limited utility

The Say: A pick-up truck for the city dweller, but for more utility and off-road capability other choices are better.

2009-2015 (non-VGT)/(VGT)

Vehicle Overview
The Strada/Triton/L200 lineage started in 1978 which had spawned five generations throughout selling life. Early iterations had rebadged versions sold under Chrysler, Dodge, and Plymouth badges (due to Chrysler's stake in the three diamond brand) sold in North America while the latest model can be had in Europe using a Fiat name. Locally, it replaced the long due L200 series after years of shouldering on and rivals shifted to CRDi engines.

With nine years in the market, Mitsubishi provided updates for the exterior and interior to keep up with the times and making the vehicle fresh from rivals. First GLX 4x4 models can be distinguished by their black bumpers while the GLS 4x4 had body colored ones. GL models wear steel wheels and lack side step board and fog lamp while special edition models that were launched in 2014 for the GLX and GLS Sport V had exterior add ons to distinguish them from their regular counterparts.

Most Strada models wear the 2.5 which is shared with other Mitsubishi vehicles in either two flavors: one with 134hp for the GL and GLX models which performs enough and the second one has 176hp and this was available among GLX-V and GLS Sport-V units that provide a wide range of rpm with power on the upper range. The other choice of engine is a 3.2 diesel that rivals the VGT variants in terms of power and acceleration. Ride quality is excellent, which is a refreshing change among rivals that are known for their bouncy rides. Driving this one on a straight path is fine but mountainous roads and anything in between will give you trouble due to slow steering, soft suspension, and less than stellar braking.

A breath of fresh air is going inside, this truck has a car-like interior which is one advantage. Early models utilized a JVC headunit with later ones (except the GL) having touchscreen monitor with DVD and navigation functions.

What Should I Get
Let us go to the basic model of the Strada range, the GL which has the 134hp 2.5, steel wheels, black door handles and side mirrors, fabric seats, CD player (MP3 function added later on) and power steering for the 4x2 models while a 4x4 version was added in 2011 which added all power features. We pick the GLX that was added in August 2007 which adds alloy wheels, dual airbags, fog lamps, bed liner, step boards, all power features, alarm, keyless entry, CD player with MP3 function, and paired to a manual transmission with options such as ABS brakes, steering wheel audio controls, Bluetooth, and a touchscreen monitor added in February 2011. Its automatic offspring, the GLX-V adds the 176hp 2.5 and a back-up camera but is 2WD. The GLX 4x4, first launched in September 2006, is based on what would be the 4x2 model (minus the black bumpers) later on while the GLS 4x4 adds ABS brakes, fender flares, tire pressure monitor system, rear bumper, power rear glass and multi information display which can be had in both manual or automatic and was discontinued with the arrival of the VGT models in 2011. The top of the line GLS Sport can be had in either 163hp 3.2 (2007 to 2010) or the 176hp 2.5 (2011 to 2015 adding a V name in the end), is 4x4 exclusive, and for April 2014, a dual lift cargo bed cover was added. A related vehicle, the L200 is made available in 2012 in either single cab or FB variants whose specifications are similar with the GL 4x2. Two limited edition models sprouted in 2014 for the GLX and GLS Sport-V with these get a bedliner, skid plates, bed cover, side graphics, and multi information system.

How Much Would It Cost Me
Maintenance costs for this vehicle is comparable to most Japanese rivals plus parts availability is wide with the engine being shared with other models in the Mitsubishi range. Problem points of this vehicle include the following: suction control valve for early models, alarm, squeaking leaf springs, and the undercarriage. Two vehicle recalls were issued for the following: in June 2010 for tightening the torque of the mounting bolts of the upper suspension arm for units sold from September 2006 to June 2009, and both in August 2013 for weld condition of the front suspension lower arm for units sold between 2011 to 2012, and the weld condition of the front propeller shaft for 4WD models.

2012-2014

Vehicle Overview
While other markets received this model as early as 2009, the Philippine market got this in April 2012 through the facelift model. This generation shifted assembly location as this is imported from Japan rather than the predecessor's local production.

Just like the model it replaced, you can get two engines in the form of a 1.6 that is lively when driven above 2,000rpm and a 2.0 that performs well since it does not struggle with the vehicle's weight. It does not deviate from its driver eccentric personality, which the previous model was known for.

A reworked interior greets the occupants as no traces of the old model can be seen here and a good thing here is a premium-like interior comes standard. The cramped back seat of old still retains, though.

What Should I Get
Similar to its predecessor, sedan models are available in three variants (initially, two models are offered), unlike the hatchback which is offered in one model. The first model launched is the V that features a 103hp 1.6 engine paired to a 4-speed automatic, all power amenities, dual front airbags, ABS brakes, CD changer system, alarm, keyless entry, fog lamps, 60/40 fold rear seat, and audio steering wheel controls. The high end R adds a 145hp 2.0 engine combined with a 5-speed automatic, Bi-Xenon headlamps, rain sensing wipers, sun roof, leather seats, smart key entry, and cruise control. A downgraded model known as the Maxx was added in July 2013 which is basically the 1.6 V minus the fog lamps, alarm, and a CD changer (this one has an auxiliary jack and a USB port instead).

How Much Would It Cost Me
Unlike the previous model, this one didn't sell well which meant not much owners reported problems although some mechanical components are similar with the older model. Units sold from January 2013 onward benefit from Mazda's Youjin 3 which promises free maintenance check-ups for the first three years, so hunting for the last examples of this vehicle is a prudent option.

2004-2008

2011-2015 non-VNT/VNT

Vehicle Overview
Manufactured since 1968, the Hilux is one of the longest running pick-up nameplates among Japanese brands whose lineage can be traced from the Stout/Briska trucks from the early years of Toyota. The seventh generation model built from 2004 until 2015 is part of the IMV platform family whose other members include the Innova MPV and the Fortuner SUV.

Similar to its contemporaries which feature long design runs, the Hilux received various updates inside and out throughout selling life. E models sold from 2005 until 2008 use alloy wheels and share the same height as the J but had utilized steel wheels later on while benefiting from a height increase. G models sold from March 2014 gain body cladding, roof rails, and a bed liner while 2.5 E and G units sold from August 2012 adds a hood scoop (which is standard for the 3.0 G) that signified an engine upgrade. A TRD limited edition model based from the 2.5 G gained niceties such as gun metal alloy wheels, TRD bumpers and decals, and daytime running lights became available in September 2014.

Just like the Fortuner, there are three engine choices for Hilux buyers which means that there's a unit for everyone. The common option would be the 2.5 diesel having 102hp that does fine on city roads and flat surfaces but complains on mountainous roads or when the vehicle is fully loaded. The best bet is the same 2.5 engine carrying 143hp which is better in every aspect and is available on 2.5 E and G from August 2012 onward and can be distinguished by a hood scoop upfront. There's a 3.0 diesel reserved for the top model which rewards you with more power in the early range but acceleration isn't neck-snapping compared to the same-era Ford Ranger or Nissan Navara. One oddity is the 2.7 gasoline which is fast - both in acceleration and fuel consumption - and is available with an automatic from 2005 until 2008. When it comes to driving, you might feel uncomfortable since the seating position lacks support for your thigh and lower back and your passengers should expect a comfortable but bouncy ride, which reminds you what type of car you are in. Handling is a breeze, braking distances is long, and the bed is huge enough.

Owners of the same time period Innova or Fortuner would feel at home since the dashboard configuration is similar to the two above mentioned vehicles although the 4x4 shifter may be far to reach for some. Later models get an improved interior which included larger buttons, touchscreen monitor with DVD and navigation system (for 3.0 G), LED gauges, and a Camry derived steering wheel. For safety conscious peeps, do take note that G models from 2005 to 2008 have one airbag and no ABS brakes while later models, depending on the variant, have these as standard kit.

What Should I Get
The basic model is the J (options as a cab and chassis and FX types were based on this) that comes with the 102hp 2.5 (this does not get an upgrade later on), steel wheels, power steering, and vinyl seats with options such as fabric upholstery, CD player with MP3 function, dual airbags, and ABS brakes added on later iterations. The E can be had with the 2.5 displacing either 102hp (2005 to 2012) or 143hp (2013 to 2015) adds body color bumpers and side mirrors, keyless entry (removed later on) and all power features while items like ABS brakes, dual airbags, fog lamps, alarm (deleted later on), and side step boards are added later on. The 2WD G sold from 2005 until 2008 had a 160hp 2.7 gasoline engine paired to an automatic, driver's airbag, fog lamps, and alloy wheels; models from 2009 til 2012 got the 102hp 2.5 diesel partnered with a manual, added ABS brakes, passenger side airbag, steering wheel audio controls, Bluetooth, alarm, and keyless entry. And going for the 2013 to 2015 2.5 G gains the 142hp variant and an option for an automatic transmission. The 3.0 G adds a 161hp 3.0, 4WD system, limited slip differential (August 2011), and LCD monitor with DVD and navigation (August 2012). The limited edition TRD, launched in September 2014, is based on the 2.5 G MT adds gun metal alloy wheels, TRD bumpers and decals, daytime running lights, and LCD monitor with DVD and navigation. When it comes to our recommended variant, it would be the 3.0 G otherwise the 2.5 G with an upgraded engine is a solid pick. If there is one to avoid, it would be the 2.7 G unless you want the smoothness of a gasoline engine.

How Much Would It Cost Me
Keeping this baby is easy, as it has low maintenance costs and affordable spare parts. Going for the diesels, for fuel consumption purposes, is a prudent option. This vehicle became a subject of a recall - which also includes its IMV cousins Innova and Fortuner - in April 2014 that a faulty spiral cable may cause the airbag not to deploy in a crash involved units built from 2005 to June 2010. Although some 2005 to 2006 Hiluxes with the 2.5 engine had problems with the fuel system which caused the engine to stop, this is a trouble free truck. With a longer shelf life plus its best seller status which meant more units in the second hand market, do take time to look around and find a unit in the best condition especially that later model releases are expensively priced while early units are cheap bargains, if you know where to look.

Vehicle Overview
Slotting above the aging N13 model sold since 2001, the imported from Mexico Sentra 200 is Nissan's answer to new rivals while providing an upmarket choice. That model is available in North America since 2007 and we got the facelift version and other Asian countries get a different Sentra model. Despite being a new model, this didn't sell well when compared to its older counterpart plus both vehicles were killed with the Sylphy's arrival in 2014.

With a 200 moniker, this one gets a 2.0 engine either available in manual or CVT transmission that acquits itself in real city driving with the latter providing smooth performance. Ride quality is excellent and soft, even when driven in the worst conditions but tackling high speed curves will give you some body roll though.

Looking outside, you'll say that it is small than same time rivals. Go inside and you'll be treated to a cabin that offers decent space and controls that are well placed. The instrument cluster is easy to read, which means that you can see how fuel efficient you drive or how fast you are.

What Should I Get
This one is only offered with one engine - a 140hp 2.0 - but the equipment varies between the manual and CVT equipped models. Manual models get all power amenities, alloy wheels, dual airbags, alarm, keyless entry, immobilizer, CD player with auxiliary jack, and power folding mirrors. Going for the automatics adds ABS brakes, fog lamps, 60/40 fold rear seat, steering wheel audio and illumination controls, and a special trunk organizer system. We'd go for the CVT for the additional goodies but we think you'll like rivals better.

How Much Would It Cost Me
Unlike the N13 Sentra, this vehicle is sold in limited quantities which meant not much problems were reported among local owners.

Used Car Review - Mercedes Benz E Class Sedan (2009-2016)

Myk Belmonte finds something luxurious and desirable in a package you can afford for this month.

2009-2016 Mercedes Benz E Class Sedan

History
In June 2015 the E Class nameplate sold 13 million copies worldwide throughout its 68 year run which is unbroken among all Mercedes Benz vehicles and its lineage had started before World War II. From a variety of body styles including the ubiquitous sedan, wagon (a European favorite), coupe, and a long wheelbase model exclusive for the Chinese market, there is an E Class for everyone who can afford it.

Representing the fourth generation model of the E Class is the W212 chassis, which is available in sedan and wagon body styles while the convertible and coupe rides on the C Class' W202 chassis that is still produced until today. Development started in 2003 followed by styling work in 2004 with design cues reminiscent of certain then-current and past models from the brand. The previous model was marred with quality issues so this one had to return to its bank vault, high quality roots.

The Philippine market was the first South East Asian country to receive this model in the region, citing a stable market despite the global financial crisis affecting larger markets such as Singapore and Thailand. The E300 sedan came first followed by the E350 Coupe in October and other low displacement engines appeared later on, with an update in 2013 that had streamlined into two variants.

Value and Costs
With the W213 model being recently launched, expect prices to dip down further but if you are aiming for this one, prices range between P1,700,000 for the older units while going for a recent release will shell you at least P4,700,000. For peace of mind and security, we suggest going for a certified pre-owned unit since these are inspected and a limited warranty is offered. Other models such as the E500 are available from the grey market and can be serviced with a nominal fee.

Since Mercedes Benz promised to return to its bank vault roots and to leave out poor reliability from its equation, there are no problems reported as of now so it is safe to assume that this will hold long than its problem laden predecessor. For luxury models like this, do inspect electronic items since they have the tendency of being an expensive fix when they go wrong and the suspension system. The 1.8 engine is turbocharged, so use high octane fuels to be safe.

Exterior and Interior
As we said above, cues of some Benz models were integrated in this vehicle including the W204 C Class, W221 S Class, and 1950s "Ponton" era models. Although still luxurious looking, the design is a mixed bag since designers took a streamlined approach to keep up with the current design language of the brand.

Go inside and be pampered by a leather filled cabin coupled with high quality materials and a clean dashboard layout. Other highlights of this vehicle include a COMAND system which could be confusing for first timers, a Harman/Kardon sound system, and steering wheel controls for audio, Bluetooth, and information controls. For the passenger's point of view, it is still spacious and comfortable to be in.

Engine
First release models are in the form of the M272 3.0 gasoline that puts out 231hp at 6,000rpm and 300Nm at 2,500-5,000rpm with later engines such as the M271 DE 1.8 turbocharged gasoline having 204hp at 5,500rpm and 310Nm at 2,000-4,300rpm and a OM651 DE 22 LA 2.1 diesel churning out 201hp and 500Nm at 1,600-1,800rpm. Lets do a rundown of the engine's characteristics, the 3.0 V6 is a smooth performer, the 2.1 diesel is much fuel friendly and can go for long while retaining the petrol's traits, and the turbo having power at 2,000, will make the car lunge forward and can keep at bay while being fuel efficient thanks to the BlueEfficiency package.

Driving Impressions
Striking a balance between comfort and handling, the W212 E Class is a hoot to drive. A Direct Control selective damping which makes the suspension soft or firm automatically depending on the road condition comes standard. Despite the somewhat bulk, it defies its weight making it a great all around vehicle.

Verdict
While old E Class models were luxurious but afflicted with reliability problems, this generation is in fighting form especially that it comes more prepared than before. With a sheer driving pleasure rivaling BMW while retaining MB's luxurious cabin, you have a winner here for less the price.

The Good:
  • Powerful engines
  • Spacious cabin
  • Balance
The Bad:
  • Not that athletic like before
  • Styling isn't for all
  • Expensive

Car Profiles - Nissan GT-R

NISSAN GT-R

Well, the car gods had answered your prayers especially that Godzilla had arrived on our shores, in the form of the 2017 model. The same formula remains: an impressive engine (with a power bump), aggressive looks, and an advanced all wheel drive system. Bad news: only one dealer sells this one and the price you have to swallow.

JEEP RENEGADE

Since Jeep is in a roll (thanks to a trend towards SUVs), they need a sub-compact SUV. This Fiat based SUV has cute but rugged looks yet with Jeep capabilities. Too bad, the price does not fit with the size.
