Quickie Used Car Review - Honda Civic (2001-2005)

2001-2005 Honda Civic

The Good: Cavernous cabin, peppy and fuel efficient engines

The Bad: Cheapo interior trim

The Say: Does not have the driving excitement of its elder generations but is a great family car.

Go For: 1.6 VTi-S
Avoid: 1.5 LXi

Price Range: P180,000-P310,000
Our Rating: ****

Vehicle Overview
The seventh generation Civic saw numerous changes which included a size bump to compact category, a flat rear floor for the comfort of rear seat passengers, and the usage of a McPherson strut, which ditched the double wishbone setup used in previous models. While this one became more mature, this one became "disappointing" for some Honda loyalists.

Utilizing carryover engines from the previous model (the SIR's 1.6 isn't available, though), the 1.5 shows its life at 3,000rpm and can carry the heavy body while the common 1.6 has more power on the lower end and is more relaxed, and a 2.0 whose trait is a smooth delivery to the top. Driving experience is good with precise steering and excellent braking (for models with ABS brakes) but going to road bumps tends to bottom up the car.

As mentioned earlier, the interior became roomier than the previous model with the rear passenger in the middle need not to dangle his/her legs. Controls are easy to reach within the driver but cheap plastic materials come standard among low models.

What Should I Get
Offered from 2001 until 2004, the LXI gives you a 108hp 1.5 engine, all power features, alloy wheels, AM/FM tuner with CD player added in a 2003 update, this rather basic variant is best skipped for this generation of this Civic. Aim for models having the 128hp 1.6 engine which starts with the VTI that adds CD tuner and for facelift models, alarm, keyless entry, and MP3 function. Our pick is the VTI-S that adds vital items such as ABS brakes, dual airbags, and fog lamps (2003 and above). Introduced in 2004 is a 153hp 2.0 which adds a larger engine and can be ordered with either fabric or leather seats. A special edition RS model was introduced in September 2002 which has the specifications of the VTI-S but available in black and with a manual transmission plus only a few units are available.

How Much Would It Cost Me
For a 15 year old vehicle, this one would give you plenty of parts access while maintenance costs are on par with Japanese rivals. While you have to worry about the air conditioning unit, this car was involved in numerous recalls for the following issues: a fuel tank which isn't tightened in 2005, passenger airbags for 2001 to 2002 VTI-S in August 2010 and April 2013, and for front airbags in July 2014.

Vehicle Overview
Developed at a time when car manufacturers are doing their cost cutting measures, the ninth generation Civic became smaller than its replacement plus with this being a victim of the global financial meltdown, reviews in North America were less than stellar which prompted to release a "quick fix" a year later. Do take note that ASEAN specifications are different from what North America receives.

Sporting the same engines from the FD model, both of these are capable just like any Honda engine but features an ECON driving mode which makes adjustments internally to further improve fuel mileage. Unlike the sporting nature that previous models are known for, this one has a more relaxed tune with more comfortable seats but going faster gives you a lot of road noise.

Inside, the interior is the opposite of what the previous model is known for. The dashboard theme is subdued (although the two-tier instrumental system is retained) than daring and wrapped with cheap plastics. Spacewise, although shrunken, is still decent just like its rivals.

What Should I Get
First made available in February 2012 is the Japan sourced EXI which rides on a 139hp 1.8 gets items which were later deleted from succeeding models including (with some introduced later in a facelift) side airbags, cruise control, back-up camera, and stability control. July 2012 saw the introduction of Thailand sourced models starting from the base S which at least has all power features, ABS brakes, front airbags, ECON button, multi-information display, alarm, keyless entry, auxiliary jack, and USB with fog lamps added in a May 2014 update. Next is the E that adds side mirror lights and paddle shift with later ones add fog lamps, cruise control, 60/40 fold rear seats, push button start, and Modulo body kits. The EL, which is the top model, adds a 153hp 2.0, leather seats, and automatic climate control with later iterations add side airbags, rain sensing wipers, and auto leveling headlamps.

How Much Would It Cost Me
Not much problems were reported from this vehicle since it is not that of a big seller when compared to the previous models so were going to assume it is trouble free. Maintenance costs are similar to rivals but Honda has maintenance intervals every 10,000kms.

2009-2012

Vehicle Overview
After a somewhat lackluster (by enthusiasts) seventh generation model, the eighth generation that saw its introduction in 2006 somewhat reclaimed its glory. It still retains its compact dimensions while utilizing new engines.

This vehicle's base engine starts with a 1.8 while competitors make do with 1.6 ones and the 2.0 is carried over from the previous model. Both engines have that requisite VTEC technology and both excel on the upper range, which is a characteristic of Hondas. When it comes to the driving experience, this wouldn't disappoint you since giving this a light foot and it will come to life while having a responsive and smooth engine. The only drawback would be the firm ride which is coupled with rock hard seats, with some may live with.

One thing which started a trend is the two-tier instrumental cluster in which the speedometer is digital while the tachometer is a conventional type and the former does not get washed out in extreme sunlight. Interior quality is tops and space is excellent, with rear passengers getting a flat floor.

What Should I Get
Going with the V will at least give you the 138hp 1.8 engine plus all power amenities, keyless entry, CD player with MP3 function with a May 2009 update (those models can be differentiated by their octagon taillights, as opposed to the earlier models' circular ones) adding ABS brakes, auxilary jack, and USB port (first two items are from the S). The S with the 1.8 engine adds dual airbags and alarm system with later units gaining fog lamps and paddle shift. The 2.0 S can be either had with a manual or an automatic (former removed in the update) transmission, with the three pedaled model adds an automatic climate control and dual exhaust pipes with finisher from the 1.8 S while the automatic adds side airbags, stability control, and leather seats. Made available in August 2011 with 26 units for sale is a Mugen Limited Edition based on the top end model that adds authentic Mugen body kits and a certificate of authentication. Among the available models, we would pick the 1.8 S especially it has everything for your daily driver needs.

How Much Would It Cost Me
When it comes to taking care of this vehicle, maintenance costs are similar to its peers of the same time. This vehicle had its fare share of problem points which includes: front power windows and misaligned  that don't function for the earlier models, engine support mount which needs to be tightened, power steering related issues, ball bearing problems, and belt tensioner. Fuel consumption, given the fact the base engine is a 1.8, is higher which contributes to a low resale value. A recall issued in September 2015 concerning a suspected defective driver side airbag deflator affecting S models happened.

Used Car Review - Honda Civic (2012-2016)

Myk Belmonte checks out the subdued appeal of an otherwise sporty car.

2012-2016 Honda Civic

History
Everyone knew what happened in the latter part of 2008 with the global financial crisis crippling nearly every car manufacturer around the world. The Detroit Three (General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler) went into serious trouble with two of them declaring bankruptcy and flying to the White House just to ask bailout money, the Japanese experienced falling sales despite their vehicles meeting the people's needs during that time, and the Koreans bucked the trend by having an increase in sales.

Honda developed the ninth generation Civic at the height of the global financial crisis in which led the company that consumers (during that time) wouldn't care about high end features and top notch quality as long as the vehicle was fuel friendly and affordable. That mindset cost them against several models such as the Ford Focus and Hyundai Elantra, which sold more in the United States and became more plushier and of high quality. Initial reviews were poor and Honda introduced a quick update for 2013 in the US. Different countries get different Civics of this generation like most get the sedan, Europe has hatchback and wagon versions, and the Type R is the remaining variant from the nameplate sold in Japan, as the Nippons prefer minivans and hatchbacks.

The Civic nameplate is one of the popular ones in the Philippines, especially it was Honda's best seller for several years and beating the Corolla in the sales race. Things went bad for Honda Cars Philippines as the latter part of 2011 they had to endure the crippling effects of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan and the flooding in Thailand, with the latter causing them stock depletion. Launched in February 2012 in the form of the EXI variant which featured stability control, side airbags, cruise control, back up camera, and 60/40 fold rear seats which was later on removed in models imported from Thailand that saw introduction in July of the same year. Updates occurred in May 2014 which was its mid-life change that had the upper models wear Modulo or Mugen bodykits and the deletion of the manual transmission while November 2014 had the manual and the non-bodykit variants return.

Value and Costs
Nowadays, you may score for a ninth generation Civic at the tune of P580,000 to P750,000. Unlike older iterations of this model that are commonplace in the used market, this one comes out a few times in the classifieds block and online selling sites. Do take note that Japan sourced models are a rare specie, since only a few were brought in and sold for a limited period of time, so if you were able to spot one for a low price you've got a winner here. For the Thailand imported units, better head for the facelifted units since these were better equipped than the older ones.

The good news for the 1.8 engine it is the same with the previous generation (albeit with slight differences) which makes maintenance costs somewhat lower while the 2.0 engine has some shared components with the CR-V. Like any car, do check the vehicle for any hidden quirks and problems since these may be a bargain point, slashing the overall price.

Exterior and Interior
You may know or not know this one but this one shrunk in size in all aspects which was one wrong move that they did in developing this vehicle, especially that cars aren't going smaller each time they are redesigned. Outside, you may tell it looks bland and designed during a lazy rainy day or worse, take a clay replica of the Civic FD and have some changes outside. Yes, some say this lost its mojo but think of this one as a rocker college dude who wears a suit and tie during their graduation ball, mellow and subdued. Facelifted models had the 1.8 E wear Modulo bodykits while the top end 2.0 EL gets Mugen ones.

It is the same banana when you go inside, gone are the daring and futuristic interior and in place is a more silent looking interior which has a luxurious appeal. Some details from the previous generation model were retained such as the two tier instrumental gauges which has two levels for the speedometer (don't worry, it is still digital) and the tachometer. New additional items for for this generation include rear folding seats, cruise control, and an LCD screen situated beside the speedometer which lets you view vehicle settings, audio settings, average fuel economy, or even the time. One negative inside are some cheap interior fittings, a step down from the predecessor.

Engine
Sure, the R18Z1 1.8 carrying 139hp at 6,500rpm and 174Nm at 4,300rpm and the R20A5 2.0 having 153hp at 6,500rpm and 190Nm at 4,300rpm are either carryovers from the FD Civic or shared with other Honda vehicles, but these are solid performers. One new feature is the ECON driving mode which adjusts the drive-by-wire throttle control unit to improve fuel consumption. Still, this vehicle is rev-happy and has that kick known for.

Driving Impressions
Does this one still drives like the older models? If we are to answer, although it has some sportiness in it, it drives more in the veins of a luxury sedan. The previous generation model was criticized for hard seats and its ride is on the firm side, good thing it received more comfortable seats and a softer ride although high speeds will punish you with lots of noise.

Verdict
Honda had experienced troubles and making some bad decisions which had cost them their reputation and image. Yes, it trades in the sporty image for a more mature image which caused some fans to look elsewhere. But in the end, Honda made an evolution by making it more mature than before, although this one lacked some character and appeal.

The Good:
  • Comfortable to be in
  • Feature loaded Japan sourced model
  • Peppy engines
The Bad:
  • Not for everyone
  • Noisy
  • Some cheap touches

Used Car Review - Honda Civic Hatchback (1992-1995)

You see this in modified form, but you want to know how it performs in the stock form. Myk Belmonte dishes out the story.

1992-1995 Honda Civic Hatchback

History
There is such reason that Japanese vehicles sell well in the tuner community. Why do I say so? Tons of aftermarket parts ranging from the performance enhancers to the aesthetics such as wheels and body kits are available. You can almost buy anything from the local tuner shop to your suking online seller to get what you need.

One of the "tuner" favorites is the Honda Civic EG in both sedan and hatchback flavors, but for this article, I will be discussing more of the latter, with the sedan having its own review soon. It was available to consumers in Japan on September 10, 1991 in sedan, coupe, and hatchback flavors. It was more lighter and more comfortable than the previous generation but the latter took a toll on its handling. It received a Belo treatment (we're not sure she is famous back then) in 1994 and replaced by the popular EK Civic in 1996.

This vehicle was launched in 1992 as an entry to the Peoples Car Development Program which occurred during the early 90s. It replaced the briefly sold Civic EF not because it was a lemon, but it was a coincidence that it was made available in 1991. The local aftermarket racing and tuning scene had to thank this car as it made an impact to this sectors because of the ease of fitting in a B16A engine and the fun to drive characteristic. Sales ceased in November 1995 with the launch of the EK Civic, which makes the EG and the previous EF having both sedan and hatchback choices in the Civic line-up.

Value and Costs
Almost twenty years in age, the Civic hatchback does not resist in having lower than P100,000 prices. Try searching in the Sunday block of classifieds to spot prices ranging between P110,000-P200,000, depending on the vehicle condition and whether it is stock or not. Back in 1992, the P236,000 base price did not include options such as headrests, sun visors, a passenger-side mirror, alloy wheels lifted from the LX Sedan, and other creature comforts.

Cost of maintaining this baby is similar to vehicles having a carburetor sold in the same period. If you plan to buy one and keep it stock, make sure that the engine is fine and there is no need for an engine rebuilt. Going for a unit with a B16A powerplant? Make sure it is not abused or raced extensively. Rust and paint problems are common, especially if the previous owner didn't have a garage to park the car under.

Exterior and Interior
From the hatchbacks in the PCDP whose lines are on the boxy side, the Civic hatchback goes with the aerodynamic side sporting a sexy profile. The Daihatsu Charade may have some sporty lines but it is based on a cube shape. Squint hard at the headlamps, they make a low hoodline and a rear spoiler contemplates the sexy back. Similar to the first generation CR-V, the glass hatch must be opened first to gain rear access.

With this vehicle focusing on economy, vinyl surfaces are abound to provide a durable interior. Comparing to the EF, dashboard quality is more excellent with softer materials being used, which you'll think it is not an economy car at all. Don't expect any power amenities here, since people back then aren't expecting a lot. Front space is excellent while the rear seats are reserved for the vertically challenged, which makes this one a two seater vehicle. Among the participants of this development program, only this and the Daihatsu Charade are sold with a two door option. .

Engine
A D13B1 1,343cc with 74hp at 6,300rpm and 102Nm at 3,100rpm motivates this hatchback in stock form. Notice the tachometer with an 8,000rpm red line, this can rev up to 7,000rpm that makes it more sporty to drive, despite the carburetor system standard.

Driving Impressions
Light and with close gear ratios, this vehicle is a hoot to drive. Parking can be a chore no thanks to the unassisted rack-and-pinon steering assembly especially if you swap the stock wheel and tire combo to some larger ones. Handling does not scream economy car, which is a surprise in this segment before. Visibility is excellent, except for the tiny portion in the rear left corner. Never mind if this vehicle was bare, these things make the driving experience unspoiled.

Verdict
Bare by todays standards, but if the driving thrill matters to you, then this car is for you. But if the daily grind to work requires you a cheaper wheels, there are other more "modern" choices available. Just make sure to drive safely.
