October 2012 Canada Auto Sales By Brand

Ford had little difficulty selling Blue Oval machines in Canada in October 2012. Convincing customers to drive home in a Lincoln, however, was an altogether more challenging proposition. Lincoln sales dropped 46% in Canada in October and are down 21% this year. Ford's gains this year are slight, but October was a bright month. F-Series sales shot up 15%.

FoMoCo's growth didn't measure up to the overall industry's surprisingly strong 8% boost in October 2012.

Neither did Chrysler Canada's 6% improvement. At the Chrysler Group, Jeep posted its second consecutive year-over-year decline. Fiat sold its first six 500 T models but overall Fiat sales were lower than they'd been since January.

General Motors was certainly the largest conglomerate to underperform Canada's overall auto industry, as sales at GM slid 4.6%. Toyota, Honda, Kia, Volkswagen, Subaru, BMW, Audi, and Acura all grew at an above-average pace, however. So did certain domestic brands: Dodge, Ford, Buick, and Cadillac.

Chevrolet sold just as many Orlandos, 1044, as Buick sold total vehicles, showing just how small a brand Buick continues to be. And just how strong a seller the Orlando's become. Cadillac sold its first 56 ATS sedans in Canada in October.

October 2012 United States Auto Sales By Brand

October 2012 U.S. sales reporting shows the Dodge Dart providing some major assistance to the Chrysler Group. Where Dodge sold only 1840 Calibers at this time last year, the Dart stepped in with 5455 sales in October 2012, nearly enough to account for the whole Dodge brand's 3773-unit increase. 

Dodge sales jumped 20% with strong Charger and Grand Caravan growth, as well. The Chrysler Group reported a 10% jump. Jeep's decline, paired with Volkswagen's big bump, allowed the German carmaker to leapfrog over the American SUV brand in October. Jeep leads VW by 41,813 sales year-to-date.

Hyundai's blaming tight supply for its 4% drop. Also Sandy. Boss John Krafcik said there weren't enough Accents and Velosters for sale, but the Santa Fe and Elantra jumped 16% and 12%, respectively. 

Overall, the industry's growth wasn't as strong as suspected pre-Sandy, but many automakers managed to grow at a rapid pace compared to October 2011. BMW USA, for example, saw sales shoot up 19%: BMW brand sales rose 21%, Mini managed to outsell Scion by a single unit. Apart from Hyundai, Nissan, and Jeep at the top, every major automaker posted year-over-year gains. Lincoln, Volvo, Mitsubishi, Land Rover, and Jaguar also recorded losses on a year-over-year basis.

The Ford Motor Company says retail sales increased 2% in October 2012. Lincoln was down 15%; the Ford brand posted an increase of slightly less than 1%. The C-Max found 3182 buyers. Toyota USA reported a collective group increase of 15.8%. Total General Motors sales increased 4.7%, expanding GM's lead over FoMoCo to 310,464 units through ten months.

While estimates suggesting that October sales would be the strongest in years shouldn't be thrown out the window, Hurricane Sandy undoubtedly impacted sales in the northeast late in the month. Approximately 25% of the nation's auto sales come from the affected area. Take away a few sales days from a large number of car buyers and sales shouldn't rise as sharply as predicted.
