Car Features - Same Car, Different Generation, Sold Together

Car manufacturers have different vehicle line-ups for different markets, especially that different countries have different tastes and requirements which varies and the right product mix is a critical requirement for survival. Some markets have resulted on selling different generations of the same car that the market dictates, with the older model being the cheaper option than its most sophisticated version.

The Philippine market is no stranger to this strategy, especially we have seen numerous Japanese brands selling both the old and new models side by side which caters the different target markets. If there is one market who does this one, travel to China and see older models of Volkswagen (in fact, all generations of a certain model are sold together) and Hyundai sold together.

In this article, we shall identify the vehicles whose old and new generations of the same model are sold side by side in our humble market. Old generation models that are sold alongside its newer counterpart due to reason of selling the remaining stocks aren't included in this list. And before misinterpreting this one which warrants a different story, we will not be counting vehicles whose replacement (new nameplate, by the way) are sold alongside the older one nor the remaining stocks are sold.

So let's identify them one by one.

Daewoo Racer-Daewoo Cielo (1996-1998)

The Racer was Daewoo's first vehicle to be sold in the Philippines in 1994. Supplanting the Racer as the low cost option is the Cielo, which is basically the second generation model sold elsewhere since 1994.

The Set-Up: Racer (low-cost), Cielo (high cost)
The Lifespan: Racer (1994-1998), Cielo (1996-1999)

Foton View first generation-Foton View second generation (2013- )

Our most unique entry in this list, the View is sold in two versions but for different purposes. The first generation model is still sold until now but as an ambulance complete with equipment. On the other hand, the second generation View is marketed for the general public in they can use it for private or public functions. Nothing escapes this one thing: it is still a Hiace doppelganger.

The Set-Up: View first generation (ambulance), View second generation (general market)
The Lifespan: View first generation (2010- ), View second generation (2013- )

Hyundai i10-Hyundai Grand i10 (2014-2015)

This Indian made hatchback had the two generation models sold side by side locally, a strategy that is being implemented in its home country until now. The first generation i10 is sold alongside the second generation model, dubbed as the Grand i10. The older model was discontinued at the end of 2015 while the Grand can be had through an indent order basis by February 2016.

The Set-Up: i10 (low-cost), Grand i10 (high cost)
The Lifespan: i10 (2008-2015), Grand i10 (2014- )

Kia Besta/Ceres-Kia Pregio/K2700 (1996-2000)

What you don't know is that the Besta (and that includes its commercial sibling the Ceres) and Pregio (and its K series models) are essentially the second and third generation van versions of the Bongo truck sold in Korea. With the Besta arriving first in 1995 and the Pregio a year later, the two have different markets. Later on, the Pregio had basic variants that the Besta used to occupy during the early 2000s. While the K2700 is still sold until today, the Pregio is discontinued for 2006.

The Set-Up: Besta (low-cost), Pregio (high cost)
The Lifespan: Besta (1995-2000), Pregio (1996-2005), Ceres (1990-1999), KC2700/K2700 (2000- )

Mazda 323/Astina-Mazda 323 Familia/Lantis (1996-1998)

In what could be the most mind boggling entry here, Columbian Autocar Corporation had sold two versions of the BG 323 (sixth generation worldwide, first here) in both sedan and Astina liftback in 1993/1994. Two to three years later, the BH 323 (seventh internationally, second in the country) in Familia sedan and Lantis liftback were introduced and the four models were sold alongside one another. The introduction of the BH had the older BG sedan lose the 1.6 engine until the former gains the lower engine sometime in 1998/1999. This set-up had the older 323 be relegated for the taxi market while the Familia gets the upscale one.

The Set-Up: 323 (low-cost), 323 Familia (high cost)
The Lifespan: 323 sedan (1993-1998), 323 Familia (1996-2000), Astina (1993-1998), Lantis (1996-1998)

Mitsubishi Lancer sixth generation-Mitsubishi Lancer seventh generation (1996-1999)

In September 1996, the seventh generation Lancer (known as the Pizza by enthusiasts) was introduced which carried most of the line-up of its older model. The sixth generation model is sold alongside the newer model through the EX variant which targets the taxi crowd and is basically the EL of old (although both models carry the same 1.3 engine). This set-up would stop in 1999 with the introduction of an updated Lancer in that year. Nine years later, another scenario was done with this model.

The Set-Up: Lancer sixth generation (low-cost), Lancer seventh generation (high cost)
The Lifespan: Lancer sixth generation (1993-1999), Lancer seventh generation (1996-2002)

Mitsubishi Lancer eighth generation-Mitsubishi Lancer ninth generation (2008-2012)

May of 2008 we had witnessed a new generation of the Lancer, this time with an EX moniker. With its imported status and the newer model having 2.0 engines during its time, the eighth generation (called the Cedia) was sold as a low cost option with two variants available fitted with a 1.6 engine as opposed to the EX's four. Nine years later after its original launch, the Cedia was killed and replaced by the EX models fitted with the lowly engine while the GT-A is the only surviving original EX model.

The Set-Up: Lancer eighth generation (low-cost), Lancer ninth generation (high cost)
The Lifespan: Lancer eighth generation (2003-2012), Lancer ninth generation (2008- )

Mitsubishi Pajero second generation-Mitsubishi Pajero third/fourth generation (2003-2008)

The third generation Pajero, known as the CK, was first released in 1999 in Japan but we had to wait until November 2003 to arrive in our local shores. While a new model was made available in its home country, the second generation Pajero got updated which made way to its Field Master moniker and got produced alongside its pricier sibling. 2007 saw the launch of the BK body and the FM stayed until 2008, which we suppose the second generation Montero Sport replaced it. As a low cost model, it was only available in 2WD configuration.

The Set-Up: Pajero second generation (low-cost), Pajero third/fourth generation (high cost)
The Lifespan: Pajero second generation (1995-2008), Pajero third generation (2003-2007), Pajero fourth generation (2007- )

Mitsubishi L300 second generation-Mitsubishi L300 third/fourth generation (1997-2007)

In the case for this popular van, the L300 had three different generation models sold together for ten years. The second generation model is the basis of the Versa Van (which was a victim of its own success) and the FB body (that will be discontinued later this year) with the third generation being the Exceed model and the fourth generation called the Space Gear. Among the three models, it was the older one that stayed strong and sold well with the Exceed removed in 2004 and the Space Gear discontinued in 2007. While the second and third generation models were locally assembled, the fourth is imported.

The Set-Up: L300 second generation (low-cost), L300 third/fourth generation (high cost)
The Lifespan: L300 second generation (1983- ), L300 third generation (1997-2004), L300 fourth generation (1997-2007)

Nissan Sentra third generation-Nissan Sentra fourth generation (1995-1999)

Nissan has a knack of selling older models alongside its newer counterparts in the Philippines and we shall start with this example. The B14 Sentra was introduced in March 1995 that made the B13 Sentra demoted to taxicab status through its LEC model. Although an update for the 1998 model year had bore a base FE model for the B14 (which carried the same 1.3 engine), the two were sold side by side until the end of the century. By 2000, the base model for the fleet market would be the FE.

The Set-Up: Sentra third generation (low-cost), Sentra fourth generation (high cost)
The Lifespan: Sentra third generation (1991-1999), Sentra fourth generation (1995-2001)

Nissan Sentra first generation (Bluebird Sylphy based)-Nissan Sentra sixth generation (2010-2014)

The biggest question was when will Nissan replace the aging N16 Sentra, which was first introduced in 2001 and got an update in 2004. Well, Nissan Motor Philippines Inc. refused to listen (that model was relegated to the taxi market) and they've complemented it with the Mexican made B16 model called the 200 whose price tag costs a million bucks. A new management (where NMPI and Universal Motors have stakes on it) caused both models to be replaced by the modern Sylphy, which is called as the Sentra in certain markets.

The Set-Up: Sentra first generation (Bluebird Sylphy based, low-cost), Sentra sixth generation (high cost)
The Lifespan: Sentra first generation (2001-2014), Sentra sixth generation (2010-2014)

Nissan X-Trail first generation-Nissan X-Trail second generation (2010-2014)

When it was introduced to the market in 2003, the first generation X-Trail was a success. So successful that NMPI (again) didn't bother to bring the second generation model which was made available in 2007 but released an updated model called the Tokyo Edition. In 2010, the newer model arrived in the form of an update with the older one being sold in 2WD guise. March 2014 saw the discontinuation of the older model while the second generation was replaced in September of that year.

The Set-Up: X-Trail first generation (low-cost), X-Trail second generation (high cost)
The Lifespan: X-Trail first generation (2003-2014), X-Trail second generation (2010-2014)

Nissan Patrol fifth generation-Nissan Patrol sixth generation (2010- )

Bet you didn't know that the Y61 Patrol is still sold in certain countries such as in Africa, Middle East, and ours. The Y62 Patrol, dubbed as the Royale in the Philippines, was brought here to rival the Toyota Land Cruiser and several luxury SUVs from Europe. This strategy keeps both camps satisfied but when it comes to sales, the Super Safari sells more.

The Set-Up: Patrol fifth generation (low-cost), Patrol sixth generation (high cost)
The Lifespan: Patrol fifth generation (2000- ), Patrol sixth generation (2010- )

Nissan Frontier first generation-Nissan Frontier second generation (2007-2014)

Another victim of a late arrival, certain countries have the Frontier Navara a bit early as it was made available elsewhere since 2005. In late 2007, while the Navara took care of what the Titanium models left the void, the Bravado (old model) targets the fleet market whose clientele include media companies. The latter was killed in March 2014, due to the merger of two Nissan distributors.

The Set-Up: Frontier first generation (low-cost), Frontier second generation (high cost)
The Lifespan: Frontier first generation (1999-2014), Frontier second generation (2007-2015)

Nissan Urvan fourth generation-Nissan Urvan fifth generation (2002-2014)

What you don't know about the E25 Urvan, which was released as the Estate in the Philippines, is that it is basically the fifth generation model with the E24 being the bare bones models sold at a cheaper price. In March 2014, the E25 was killed first with the older one discontinued a year later in favor of the NV350 Urvan.

The Set-Up: Urvan fourth generation (low-cost), Urvan fifth generation (high cost)
The Lifespan: Urvan fourth generation (1988-2015), Urvan fifth generation (2002-2014)

Suzuki Alto-Suzuki Celerio (2009-2013)

Our Altos are sourced from India, which is from Maruti Suzuki. In that market, both the old and new Altos are sold side by side, with the Celerio being the newer model. For the Philippine market, the Alto is marketed as a low cost alternative (which rivals the Chery QQ in price) while the Celerio battles the with the i10 and Picanto. While the two are packaged differently towards a specific demographic, both of them are fuel friendly and that's for sure.

The Set-Up: Alto (low-cost), Celerio (high cost)
The Lifespan: Alto (2007-2013), Celerio (2009-2015)

Suzuki Vitara-Suzuki Grand Vitara (2000-2004)

While not a bestseller, the first generation Vitara is a niche model and had defined Suzuki throughout the years. Year 2000 saw the arrival of the second generation Vitara, now wearing a Grand prefix which was a huge leap in all aspects from its predecessor including a huge jump in price. In that case, both old and new models were sold side-by-side, which meant the former enjoyed a long stay in the market.

The Set-Up: Vitara (low-cost), Grand Vitara (high cost)
The Lifespan: Vitara (1994-2004), Grand Vitara (2000- )

Toyota Corolla-Toyota Corolla Altis (2001-2005)

We all know that during the late 90s to early 00s, the Revo was Toyota's cash cow. To keep a competitive edge on the passenger car market as well to prevent the newer Altis to be utilized as a taxicab, the older Corolla lovelife was instead offered to them. While the Altis enjoyed latest technologies (at that time) such as EFI engines and airbags, the fleet friendly lovelife had to make do with carburetor engines and a virtually basic interior. At the end of 2005, the love has ended production.

The Set-Up: Corolla (low-cost), Corolla Altis (high cost)
The Lifespan: Corolla (1997-2005), Corolla Altis (2001-2007)

Toyota Tamaraw-Toyota Revo (1998-2002)

Between 1999 to 2004, the Revo was the country's best selling car. Just like the strategy with the Corolla, both the Tamaraw and Revo are sold together with the former being marketed for the fleet market. Interestingly enough, the Revo had a Tamaraw FX badge until it was dropped in a 2003 update. Sure, these two models went to car heaven and were replaced by the equally superior Innova in 2005, they have left an impact in our market.

The Set-Up: Tamaraw (low-cost), Revo (high cost)
The Lifespan: Tamaraw (1991-2002), Revo (1998-2005)

Car Features - January-September 2007 Car Sales Figures

Ten years ago, Friendster was the Facebook back then and customizing your wall was the in thing, emo bands such as My Chemical Romance and Paramore became popular, we had Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson as a love team, and the first iPhone was released. Ten years ago, the automotive scene was different with several models being at the top of their segments with some falling down. Some categories became popular among buyers while some are in decline and between 2007 and this year, a lot of brands enter the market.

For our first car feature this year, let us go back to 2007 and compare how the landscape had changed while we wait for the official figures. Do take note non-CAMPI members such as Mercedes Benz, Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep, Subaru, Jaguar/Land Rover, and Chery do not report their numbers so don't expect to see how they stack.

Segment Total: 13,980

In 2007, sub-compacts are on gaining traction with numerous models joining industry stalwarts Honda and Toyota. Hatchbacks are now accepted by the society while smaller ones such as the Kia Picanto and Suzuki Alto are just a minority, with the last two being separated in sales reports as a standalone category due to their increasing number in the following years.

Segment Total: 12,754

Back in 2007, the compact car best seller was the Honda Civic, which sold more than the Toyota Corolla Altis. The former, in its FD chassis code, was the segment leader in 2006 and 2008 while its last top post is in 1999 and 2000. Later on, other brands pitted in their contenders but this category would slowly decrease in numbers later on.

Segment Total: 1,733

In that year, everyone wanted a Toyota Camry and there was a long list for this vehicle. So popular other models were nearly ignored and notice at that wide gap between the second placer. Compared to today, there are a handful of models to choose from but the heart screams Camry for most buyers in this segment.

Segment Total: 6,966

Redesigned for 2007, the Honda CR-V became the best selling compact SUV which had a lot of buyers fall in line for this one. Notice the Hyundai Tucson, at number two, had sold a lot than veterans from Ford and Nissan and became the segment leader for the years to follow and that's because of one thing the straight H brand lacks: a diesel.

Segment Total: 8,231

Last year, this segment is the hottest with most models being replaced or upgraded at that time.  Back in 2007, if there is one car that everyone desires, it is the Toyota Fortuner. Compared to the second place Ford Everest, the wide gap means that although while rivals did their best nothing beats Toyota. From 2009 until 2013, the Mitsubishi Montero Sport became the number one in this segment.

Segment Total: 1,107

Consisting of expensive models priced above a million bucks, the best seller of this batch is the Mitsubishi Pajero whose two models (the Field Master and the modern BK/CK body) are sold at different price points. Other models that sold more than a hundred units included the Nissan Patrol and Ford's Explorer and Expedition.

Segment Total: 24,081

For the year 2007, the Toyota Innova is the Philippines' best selling car with 10,500 units sold. This segment sold 24,000 units alone with other best sellers are coupled in this category alone. Surprises include the mini-MPV Toyota Avanza which placed second on this list and the Isuzu Crosswind beat the Mitsubishi Adventure for the fourth time (the former sold more between 2002 to 2004 and 2007 to 2008) and would never reclaim again.

Segment Total: 5,710

Today, Toyota sold lots of Hiace vans ten or fifteen times more than it did in 2007. Back then, the Hyundai Starex and Nissan Urvan sold more than the vehicle in the first sentence. Among those vans that are targeted at the upper scale, the Kia Carnival, which was redesigned for that year, is the best seller.

Segment Total: 6,157

By just a 12 unit difference, the Mitsubishi Strada became the segment leader for this time period. Redesigned in September 2006 and updated last August of that year, consumer interest piqued and do remember the Toyota Hilux was just ripe for an upgrade while the Isuzu D-Max got an update in the same year.

Segment Total: 19

Only three sports car models from mainstream brands are available back then. The Mitsubishi Eclipse is the newer model in this list, while the Hyundai Coupe is updated and can be only had through a by order basis, and the Nissan 350z is showing its age. Nowadays, sports cars can be had from Toyota to Ford in a wide variety of price and fun factor.

Segment Total: 974

When it comes to luxury brands, BMW is numero uno in this segment. Back then, Mercedes Benz sells well but their non inclusion means no numbers are reported and Lexus wasn't locally available (plus the JPEPA does not exist) so it means the Bavarian manufacturer takes the cake. On the other hand, Volvo sells more than Audi and Porsche (although the two latter brands are distributed by one company, when their numbers are combined means they sell more).

Used Car Review - Chevrolet Spark (2011-2016)

As this model is slated to be replaced by an all new generation, let us revisit this one.

2011-2016 Chevrolet Spark

History
Mention the words Korean car and the top two names that come to mind are Hyundai and Kia, then we do have the occasional oddball brands like Ssangyong and Renault Samsung on the minority side. On the other hand, do you remember the Daewoo brand whose offerings include the cheapo Racer sedan and the cute Matiz hatchback? Oh, the one that we had two decades ago whose distributor is based from Cebu and had ventured to Chrysler vehicles and to multicabs later on. While Daewoo passenger cars are now a part of GM Korea (and these were renamed to Chevrolets in their home country later on), their commercial vehicles division was purchased by Tata Motors of India while their bus division stayed on.

Based on the Beat displayed at the 2007 New York Auto Show which was displayed alongside the Trax (which became an actual production car) and Groove concepts, the third generation Spark won a poll by General Motors which gave a green light as a real production car. Production commenced in 2009 with deliveries started the following year in various world markets under numerous names. Before we leave this paragraph, this one made its debut as Skids in Michael Bay's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen in 2007 which also featured in what would be the fifth generation Camaro, also known as Bumblebee.

One of the vehicles which brought back the Chevrolet name to life in the Philippines is this one, which replaced the ho-hum second generation model from 2006 to 2010. When it was first debuted in February 2011, the LT with a stick shift and a 1.2 engine is available with the LS having both transmissions and a 1.0 engine followed months later. A minor update occurred in May 2013 without any line-up changes.

Value and Costs
Priced below P600,000 during its run, the Spark had initial success but it dwindled due to the popularity of Japanese rivals as well as the Trailblazer later on. For those who want a city dweller without experiencing first owner depreciation, second hand units can be had between P200,000 to P400,000. Units purchased from April 2011 enjoy a five year warranty, so look for a vehicle sold from March 2012 to utilize this one.

Comparing to some rivals from Japan and Korea sold at the same time, this one could be somewhat pricier to maintain and parts aren't that much widespread, although the latter can be rectified if you look beyond the casa. Fuel consumption with the automatic isn't that good compared to the manual, so while you can, learn to drive stick if you really want this one or rivals can provide you better. Problem points for this car involve the auxiliary fan and the aircon, so keep an eye on those items.

Exterior and Interior
As we said earlier, its Beat concept car origins gave the car some character and flair (as opposed to some egg-like of the old model) and it will make your head turn. A bold move, to be honest, since it presented a new era the bow tie brand during its time. Another feature which was last seen in the Nissan Terrano of the 90s and copied by the Honda HR-V is the rear door handles situated at the pillar, making access by children difficult. LS models have black door handles and steel wheels while the LT has alloy wheels and body color door handles.

Going inside, you'll be treated to a roomy cabin with expanse spaces for your heads and legs. One feature which you may find it cool or tacky is the LED tachometer that is inspired from a motorcycle. Good thing that interior quality had improved, with the previous model having a cheap one which reflects its price.

Engine
Two Daewoo developed engines are in use for Philippine market models, with both of these coming from the STEC-II family. The 1.0 having 67hp at 6,400rpm and 90Nm at 4,800rpm and 1.2 with 81hp at 6,200rpm and 110Nm at 4,600rpm won't win you any awards but they're up to task. Going for the 1.0 will give you slow acceleration when paired to an automatic while the manual is decent. Our engine of choice is the 1.2, since it has enough grunt and is fun to drive (which we will delve later)

Driving Impressions
Thanks to a curb weight below a thousand kilos, this one is a fun partner especially that handling is a notch higher than rivals. Braking needs your constant attention as this one lacks ABS brakes, something that rivals sold today have as standard. Who says that going cheap you can't have fun?

Verdict
While an improvement over its dowdy predecessor, the second generation does not standout the sub-compact crowd, maybe except for driving dynamics. The Celerio is fuel friendly, the Picanto has a high quality interior, and the i10 is the total package. If you're willing to live with some faults, then this is a good pick.

The Good:
  • Decent headroom
  • Practical
  • Easy to drive
The Bad:
  • Slow with the automatic
  • Rear handle may be hard for kids
  • Does not sparkle in the class
The Pick: 1.2 LT

THE SPECS

Used Car Review - BMW Z4 (2009-2016)

Ready yourself for summer with this car.

2009-2016 BMW Z4

History
We all know that BMW has a soft spot for SUVs and sedans with a touch of class while providing sports car handling, bet you don't know that the Munich based manufacturer had produced convertibles since the 1950s with the 507. Although it looked good, this 501 and 502 based vehicle proved to be expensive - despite its position to fill the gap between the cheap British convertibles from Triumph and MG and the top end Mercedes Benz 300SL - and after a run of 252 units built between 1956 to 1959, it was discontinued. The limited release Z1 was introduced in 1989 and only 8,000 were built but only in 1995 they got serious with the Z3.

Similar to its predecessors, the second generation Z4 (with chassis code E89) was first announced in December 2008 with sales started in May 2009. One notable change for this vehicle is it assembled in Bavaria, Germany and not in South Carolina, USA as it was the case of its older brothers, with the latter now exclusively building SUVs for worldwide consumption. Production ended in August 2016 with rumors of a replacement model jointly built by BMW and Toyota.

Alongside several new models such as the fifth generation 7 Series, the second generation Z4 arrived in Philippine shores in September 2009 in one variant, the sDrive 3.0.

Value and Costs
Brand new, you can get this one for six million pesos until a price drop in 2015 which slashed the price to P4,500,000. What used to be a rich kids plaything used during the weekends can be now yours for a price range between P2,400,000 to P3,500,000 bucks. As a rule for premium brands, checking out the certified pre-owned section is the wise move.

Do not compare this one with the likes of the Mazda MX-5, rather maintaining one is similar to its compatriots, the Mercedes Benz SLK Class and the Porsche Boxster, which is definitely on the higher side. For such a vehicle like the Z4, do inspect the electronic parts thoroughly and the top if its folds properly.

Exterior and Interior
Philippine market models have a hard top as standard, which was followed suit by several German rivals for our market. Remove the badge, its kidney grille gives an identity that it is distinctively BMW. Let us leave the design alone, which speaks for itself.

Inside, more space was given for the occupants and slightly for the folding top, which hogs trunk space when used. Another room for improvement is the interior quality, with better materials used than before.

Engine
Paired to an N52B30 3.0 inline six which produces 255hp at 6,600rpm and 310Nm at 2,600rpm, this one is a willing performer. It does not disappoint you and it gives you a smooth tone whether driving slow or full bore.

Driving Impressions
Just like all BMWs, this is one entertaining driver thanks to a communicative chassis with an exhaust note similar to muscle cars and a smooth engine, While fun to drive, it pales in comparison with the Porsche Boxster though.

Verdict
An improvement over its predecessor, the second generation Z4 still doesn't stray from the core values of a BMW. What used to be expensive when brand new is now affordable and could be a potential classic.

The Good:
  • Fun to drive
  • Looks good
  • Somewhat affordable when used
The Bad:
  • As always, impractical when top down
  • Smallish engine
  • Expensive to keep
The Pick: sDrive 3.0i

THE SPECS
Engine: 2,996cc N52B30 I6 gasoline
Power: 255hp @ 6,600rpm
Torque: 310Nm @ 2,600rpm
Fuel Consumption: 4-8km/L (city), 8-11km/L (highway) (*estimated and varies)
Transmission: 6-speed automatic
Suspension: Front McPherson strut, rear multi link
