Impressive though the positive percentage changes in the list below may seem, take a look back and remember 2009. It was one of those periods which shortened the life of your average auto executive by approximately ten or fifteen years. In other words, automotive sales weren't shooting through the roof. All an SUV needed to do in 2010 to outshine the preceding year was, you know, sell at semi-normal levels.
It just so happens, however, that the Detroit Three are currently producing some of the world's best SUVs and crossovers. GM's three Lambda-platform CUVs from Buick, GMC, and Chevrolet are the class of the large pack. Rough and ready and pretty, the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee just improved its year-to-date total by over 10,000 sales in September alone. And how 'bout that Jeep Wrangler? A recent mid-model freshening should help bring continued success for the 2011 Jeep Wrangler.
But it's actually an older model that's holding fast as America's favourite American utility vehicle. The Ford Escape hasn't had a full redesign since its.... first design. That was more than a decade ago. Facelifted and nipped and tucked and improved, the 2010 Ford Escape sells like hotcakes for two reasons: it was pretty decent to begin with; and the deals are super customer-friendly. It's hard to imagine anyone arguing against the statement that the new for 2010 Chevrolet Equinox isn't better than the Escape. That doesn't stop the Escape from being the better seller.
