2016 Chevrolet Malibu LT 1.5T Review – Downright Competitive

2016 Chevrolet Malibu LT 1.5T
Times have changed. Expectations have been altered.

A decade ago, in 2006, GM Canada sold more than 18,000 Chevrolet Malibus and more than 18,000 Pontiac G6s.

THE GOOD
+ Terrific ride and handling

+ Cooperative transmission
+ Straightforward interior
+ Roomy back seat
+ Rather stylish, no?
THE BAD
– No seat bolstering
– Interior's hard plastics
– The competition is excellent
– 1.5T isn't a wonder
– Poor visibility
Not only is GM Canada no longer the force it was then – GM's Canadian market share is currently 13.1%, down from 25.9% in 2006 – but the midsize sedan market has taken a tumble.

The Malibu and its rivals, a list which no longer includes the G6 from GM's defunct Pontiac brand, will struggle to generate 100,000 Canadian sales in 2016, a 40% drop over the course of a decade.

Under the midsize segment's cloud, GM is releasing an all-new Malibu. The intermediate car market may be shrinking both north and south of the border, but it's still a vast and highly competitive market in the United States.

GM could sell more than a quarter-million Malibus in the U.S. this year.

There's no point giving up on such volume simply because 460,000 buyers will choose a GM small SUV/crossover instead; particularly now that GM has completely sorted out how to make a midsize sedan handle and ride very, very well, indeed.

WHAT IS IT?
General Motors began building Chevrolet Malibus in 1964, took a 14-year break, and then reinstated the nameplate in 1997. This Malibu, however, is not the Malibu of 1964.

Nine generations on, the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu is a successor to the poorly received and short-lived eighth-generation Malibu of 2013-2015, a car GM quickly refreshed and has now quickly replaced. Righting wrongs is not a bad business strategy.

In Canada, 2016 Chevrolet Malibu pricing starts at $23,495 for the Malibu L: 16-inch covers on steel wheels, no backup camera, no heated seats.

That car, the upgraded $25,995 Malibu LS, and the $26,995 LT we're driving make progress with a turbocharged 1.5L four-cylinder producing 163 horsepower.

There's also a Malibu Hybrid, which cuts fuel consumption to 5.1 L/100km but lifts the price to $30,700.

The $33,795 Malibu Premier comes standard with a 2.0L turbo producing 250 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, an engine which consumes 18% more fuel than the 1.5T.

Our 2016 Chevrolet Malibu LT was optioned up with the $1995 True North Package, a $1995 Leather Package, and a $995 Convenience & Technology Package for a $32,080 total, fees included.

HOW BIG IS IT?
The ninth-gen, 2016 Malibu may look as big as Chevrolet's true big sedan, the Impala. But it's not.

Not quite. The Impala stretches 7.5 inches farther, bumper to bumper. Total interior volume isn't that different, but the Impala's trunk is 19% larger. On the other end of the Chevrolet equation, the Cruze, also new for 2016, is ten inches shorter than the Malibu, bumper to bumper, and carves out 6% less cargo space and 9% less passenger volume.

The Malibu's top-selling rival, Toyota's Camry, is smaller than the Malibu, as well. At 190.9 inches long, the Camry is 2.9 inches shorter. The Toyota is also 1.3 inches lower. Official specs say the Malibu offers a slightly larger trunk and a slightly larger interior. A typical 4-cylinder Camry tips the scales with 174 extra pounds compared with the featherweight Malibu.

2016 Chevrolet Malibu LT 1.5T profile
DOES IT WORK?
No automaker sells more midsize cars in North America than Toyota. The Toyota Camry doesn't make hay by providing mainstream car buyers with an upmarket, luxurious interior full of premium textures and materials inherited from its Lexus ES sibling. But while the Camry lacks the interior style and material quality we're increasingly seeing from rivals as varied as Mazda, Chrysler, Honda, and Volkswagen, Toyota can fall back on a peerless reliability record and acceptable levels of execution in every other facet.

Unlike the Mazda 6 GT we drove last week, the Chevrolet Malibu – like the Toyota Camry – does not have a cabin made to rival entry-level luxury brand sedans. The door plastics are so hard you won't want to rest your elbow there. The seats aren't sufficiently bolstered. The climate controls are far too basic (and blissfully straightforward) to resemble anything a luxury brand would offer. Manual shift mode is engaged, stupidly, via a button on the top of the shifter. GM persists with rubbery switches on the steering wheel that may suggest durable ruggedness but also convey a strong sense of Little Tikes.

Worsening the interior are A-pillars which slope so sharply and thicken at the bottom so severely that visibility is rather poor. It's quiet in here, and there's space in the back that simply didn't exist in the 2013-2015 Malibu, but even at $32,080, the Malibu isn't nice. Apple CarPlay, a sunroof, and 4G LTE in-car WiFi can't change that.

Until you're in motion, a $32,080 Malibu feels like it should be priced at about $27,990. But then the Malibu shows where modern GM is at its best. The 2016 Malibu rides so sedately and in such silence that it's hard to believe it could become an engaging handler, but Chevrolet's chassis developers crafted a Malibu with quick and properly weighted steering, terrific mid-corner balance, and a rear end that wants to be part of the game.

Brake feel is spot on, and the bigger 18-inch wheels and wide tires of our tester enhance grip but don't impair ride quality one whit. Credit for the dynamic excellence is owed mostly to the Malibu's extraordinarily light weight structure. At 3126 pounds, this Malibu weighs 340 pounds less than the 2015 Hyundai Sonata Limited we tested; 527 pounds less than the last-gen Malibu about which we were so critical.

With weight reduction in place and in search of greater fuel efficiency figures, GM installed a 1.5L turbocharged four-cylinder engine with only 160 horsepower in the Malibu. Somewhat buzzy at low rpm and not especially full of gumption off the line, the 1.5T's 184 lb-ft of torque becomes apparent once revs climb and an overtake is required.

When it comes to tiny turbocharged four-bangers, we prefer the Volkswagen Jetta's impeccably smooth 1.4T but would respond more favourably to the 2016 Malibu's 1.5T if we witnessed impressive fuel economy figures. The week prior, a 2.5L naturally aspirated 2.5L in the Mazda 6 consumed only 7.3 L/100km of mostly urban driving. The Malibu needed 8.3.

IS ANYONE BUYING IT?
Indeed they are. Through the first five months of 2016, the Chevrolet Malibu is Canada's third-best-selling midsize car thanks to a 22% year-over-year sales increase in a category that's down 16%. The Malibu is on track for 2016 to end as the nameplate's best year since 2010.

South of the border, U.S. sales of the Chevrolet Malibu are up 28% in a midsize category that's down 6%. At this stage of 2015, the Malibu trailed the fifth-ranked Chrysler 200 by more than 6700 sales. One year later, through five months, the fifth-ranked Malibu leads the eighth-ranked Chrysler by more than 71,000 units.

SHOULD I BUY SOMETHING ELSE INSTEAD?
There's no shortage of viable alternatives. The Toyota Camry, North America's best-selling midsize car, offers legendary reliability and a huge rear seat. The Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, and Nissan Altima all offer a lot of kit for the money. The Ford Fusion might be a touch too small in the rear seat, but it's at least as pleasant to drive as this Malibu and offers a wide variety of configurations.

The Honda Accord, meanwhile, is GCBC's favourite midsize car, blending space and a healthy degree of athleticism with superior build quality and buttery smooth powerplants.

HOW MUCH SHOULD I PAY?
The way GM Canada's press office built this specific Malibu represents a pleasant but not unaffordable midsize Chevrolet, but you could leave off the $1995 True North Edition if you don't need 18-inch wheels, MyLink with navigation, and a sunroof.

With fees, the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu LT 1.5T at $30,085 is a quiet, high-content, surprisingly fun to drive, relatively efficient, and roomy sedan that holds its own against its competitive set. And there'll be incentives soon enough.

2016 Chevrolet Malibu LT interior details
WHAT'S THE VERDICT?
It's become increasingly common for upper-trim midsize cars to feel decidedly premium; premium enough to embarrass high-priced luxury brand sedans.

The 2016 Chevrolet Malibu won't do that. The interior lacks any sort of design wow factor, for starters, and doesn't have the material quality to measure up to its class leaders, let alone entry-level sports sedans from upmarket brands.

The 2016 Chevrolet Malibu does, however, find its chance to shine when the car is in motion. Given that the overwhelming majority of moments spent by a typical owner with his or her car occur when the car is in motion, this is excellent news.

Somehow, General Motors built a large, comfort-oriented driver's car that never shouts about it, never seeks out the adulation which accompanies such a reputation, and never demands that it's driver accept punishment in payment for its understated athletic talents.

For the midsize car buyer who appreciates the new car's style, does not look askance at the reputation carved out by the nameplate's recent history, and does not demand a perfect interior, the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu LT 1.5T is a downright competitive alternative to the segment leaders.

Watch Alex On Autos Video Reviews: 2016 Mazda CX-9, 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS, 2016 Kia Soul EV, 2017 Hyundai Elantra

2016 Mazda CX-9 grey
Over the past few days our favourite video car reviewer and fellow TTAC contributor, Alex Dykes, published a raft of new vehicle video reviews, including a look at the (eagerly?) anticipated, second-generation, 2016 Mazda CX-9.

Mazda allowed the first CX-9 to linger for far too long. Since 2007, when it was first launched, only 223,000 CX-9s have been sold in America. Ford will sell at least that many Explorers in 2016 alone. But Mazda's new CX-9 is more stylish, more efficient, and far more modern.

Still, don't expect the CX-9 to top the sales leaderboard. Globally, Mazda only has capacity for 50,000 CX-9s per year, of which 80% will come to North America.

GCBC's The Good 12 For 2016

2016 The Good 12 Logo GCBC car awards
GCBC's The Good 12 for 2016 includes the vehicles that would be most welcomed as permanent members of the GCBC Towers driveway. Park them out front on Christmas morning. Tie them with a bow. We appreciate your kindness.

None have base prices above USD $67,000. They reflect many different parts of the market, they come from different places, they're powered by very different engines, they're accomplished in different areas. And when any one of them drives by, I want it for myself.

Click any of the images to be taken to the model's Sales Stats page. Don't forget to check out GCBC's The Bad 8, the cars which we don't want to receive even as gifts. For more on what The Good 12 really is, visit the GCBC Awards page.

Chevrolet Suburban
Can it ____? Yes. What about ___? Of course. Even ____? Yeah, that too. Fill in the blanks however you want. The Chevrolet Suburban is what you buy when you need one vehicle to meet every potential vehicular need.
Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat
Remember the first Dodge Charger SRT-8 with its audacious 425-horsepower V8? That car was an edgy and affordable Detroit riposte to the typical German muscle sedan. This Charger SRT? 707 horsepower. Edgy, indeed.
Ford Mustang
There isn't just one good Mustang. The V6 is fun and affordable. The GT is fast and evocative. The Shelby GT350 is a proper European sports car fighter. They all look terrific. They're all far more modern than Mustangs were just two years ago.
Honda Odyssey
The value quotient with every minivan is unbelievably convincing. The Odyssey separates itself from the people-carrying pack with the sort of steering, ride, and handling that, rather than punishing you, rewards you instead.
Jeep Wrangler
Just ask the politicians who flop because they couldn't pull off the cowboy-boots-at-the-Iowa-state-fair look: authenticity matters. The Wrangler is exactly what the Wrangler is supposed to be.
Mazda 3 5-Door
Mazda's most popular car is the best all-around small car money can buy. It's sufficiently quick and fuel efficient, tackles a corner with aplomb, and marries attractive interior styling to terrific exterior styling.
Mazda MX-5 Miata
You wake up early on a Saturday morning in July. You took care of the day's pressing concerns last night. You own a Miata, so you leave the house to go for a drive. To nowhere in particular.
Mini Clubman
Most Minis are simply too small. The first two big Minis – Countryman and 4-Door – are awkward. So why not a Mini wagon? Mixing great on-road behaviour and a small wagon body at an affordable price produces a winner.
Porsche Macan S
20 years ago the idea would have sounded foolish. But what's so categorically wrong about a Porsche with Porsche-like dynamics, all-weather appeal, and space for five people and their stuff?
Ram 1500 EcoDiesel
The Ram 1500 is a very good pickup truck, with or without the diesel. Highly regarded handling, true full-size capability, and attractive styling are integral to the equation. But mixing all this torque with so little fuel is a remarkable achievement.
Volkswagen Golf GTI
Before you even spend time with the GTI, you know it will be good. But then it's better than that. More space than you expected. More power. More expertise on a twisty road. And a more mature blend of performance attributes than you thought possible.
Volvo XC90
Nobody does wagons quite like Volvo. But the modern wagon isn't really a wagon, is it? We want to ride high, climb snowbanks, and see the traffic beneath us. Thus, Volvo presents the second-gen XC90, with one of the best interiors in the current automotive universe and a prototypical Swedish exterior.

Auto News For Friday, December 18, 2015 - GM Isn’t Delivering Diesel Colorados And Canyons

2016 Chevrolet Colorado Diesel
Here are the six must-read, must-watch auto news stories and videos for Friday, December 18, 2015.

DIESEL
Why haven’t purchasers of diesel-powered Chevrolet Colorados and GMC Canyons received their pickup trucks yet?

INSIDE THE AUTO INDUSTRY
It’s been a strong December, and there’s reason to believe, maybe this year will definitely be better than the last. U.S. auto sales are surging once again in December, forecasters say, and the record set in 2000 of 17.4 million sales seems almost certain to be broken by around 100,000 vehicles.

AUTOFOCUS
Canadian minivan sales are falling. But there are some vans that are selling a whole lot better this year than last.

TTAC
Over the course of the year, GCBC’s founder and editor has tested $2.2 million worth of new vehicles. In this post at The Truth About Cars, you’ll see the biggest surprises, the biggest disappointments, the best of the best, the worst of the worst, the most efficient, and the least efficient. And yes, a diesel-powered Volkswagen consumed less fuel than any other car we tested. The fact that, months later, a scandal erupted, doesn’t change the fact that the Jetta was in fact tested by GCBC and did in fact consume less fuel than any other car tested.

RECALL
Nissan is recalling 18 copies of the 2015 and 2016 Puerto Rico market GT-R because, "The affected vehicles have a Certification Label that is missing the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) and Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) information. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of 49 CFR Part 567, "Certification.”” In other words, the GT-Rs aren’t in any danger of, you know, blowing up.

Auto News For Thursday, December 10, 2015 - Hyundai's Genesis Brand Introduces G90

2018 Genesis G90
Here are the five must-read, must-watch auto news stories and videos for Thursday, December 10, 2015.

FUTURE

Hyundai's new Genesis brand – not the Genesis sedan or coupe, not the Genesis band, but the new Genesis brand – now has a flagship. The G90 was revealed yesterday in Seoul. Here's the automaker's new website, which clearly states at the bottom the parentage: "Hyundai Motor."

AUTOFOCUS

There are reasons to believe these vehicles would sell, but from the BMW Z4 and Buick Regal to the Ford C-Max and Ford Flex, these are 25 of the most ignored vehicles in Canada.

TTAC
Ford's F-Series outsold the two full-size GM pickup trucks in the U.S. in November, the first such occasion since March of this year. Sales of the midsize-leadng Toyota Tacoma are booming, too, so Toyota is planning to build more of them.

REVIEW
The 2016 Chevrolet Malibu, according to Automobile magazine, "merits cross-shopping even against the feature-rich Korean entries in the class," as a value proposition.

2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 Crew Cab 4x4 Review - Adding Up The Midsize Savings

2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 Crew Cab red off road
Can you save money by purchasing a smaller truck?

Sure you can. But perhaps not quite as much as you expected; perhaps not enough to make up for the loss of outright capability.

Construction site competence and passenger volume aren't the only components in the equation, of course. But we wanted to discover the real monetary differences between midsize and full-size offerings.

We reviewed the new generation of GM's midsize pickups already. Our judgements from a review of the 2015 GMC Canyon are nearly all applicable to the subject of this review, a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado. The differences between these twins in this particular case relate to the length of the bed and wheelbase. The Canyon had a longer wheelbase and a longer bed, and its ride quality was superior. Subjectively, the Colorado looks better for two reasons: I prefer the grille, and the shorter bed removes the Canyon crew cab long box's awkward proportions.

THE GOOD
• Manageable size

• Great styling
• Sufficiently functional for five
• Quick steering, solid braking
• Plenty of real world capability
THE BAD
• Ride not that great in short bed guise
• At $43K, missing some key features
• Verging on full-size thirst
• Crew cab rear isn't cavernous
• Numerous chintzy bits inside

Rather than review what is, for all intents and purposes, the same truck a second time, we're doing something a little different. How much money can this truck really save you? Because we've spent extensive time with the Colorado and Canyon's full-size sibling, the GMC Sierra, we're using our real-world fuel economy results to pit GM's new midsize offering against the far more popular full-size truck while also examining their interior and exterior dimensions, their range of capability, their total fuel costs, and their out-the-door prices.

Crew cab. Mid-level engine upgrade. Short box. Four-wheel-drive. 2016 Chevrolet Colorado vs. 2016 GMC Sierra.

INSIDE
In crew cab format, the biggest cabin available in either the Colorado/Canyon or the Silverado/Sierra, the Colorado's rear occupants are treated to 35.8 inches of legroom, 56.1 inches of shoulder room, and 53.4 inches of hip room.

In the Sierra, a crew cab's rear occupants have an additional five inches of legroom (40.9), 10 inches of shoulder room (65.7), and seven inches of hip room (60.3).

Moreover, the Sierra offers seating for six, not the Colorado's five. And the Sierra's driver and front passenger are also treated to much more space, with 3.6 extra inches of legroom, 8.5 additional inches of shoulder room, and 6.5 additional inches of hip room.

OUTSIDE
No wonder the Sierra offers more space inside, it's the far bigger truck on the outside.

A short box crew cab Colorado is 212.7 inches long, 74.2 inches wide, and 70.6 inches tall on a wheelbase stretching 128.3 inches. GM says there are 8.4 inches of ground clearance.

A short box crew Cab Sierra, on the other hand, is 17 inches longer (230), six inches wider (80), three inches taller (74.0) with ground clearance of 8.9 inches.

WORKING
The bigger truck is designed to do bigger things. A 5.3L V8-engined, four-wheel-drive 2016 GMC Sierra with GM's Max. Trailering Package and a short bed can tow up to 10,800 pounds; 3,800 more than the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado 3.6L V6.

The payload of that Sierra is 2,130 pounds, 550 more than our Colorado's maximum payload.

The Colorado's cargo box is 62.7 inches long and 57.8 inches wide – 44.4 inches wide between the wheelhousings. Cargo volume totals 1,169 litres. The Sierra's short box is 69.3 inches long and 64.6 inches wide – 51 inches wide between the wheelhousings – with total cargo volume of 1,512 litres, 29% more than the Colorado offers.

FUEL
The last time we drove one of GM's new midsize trucks, a long-box crew cab GMC Canyon consumed 11 litres of fuel for every 100 kilometres of driving. But that test was completed in early summer. Our test of this 2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71, a four-wheel-drive crew cab with the shorter box, was completed in the cooler temperatures of fall. Similarly, our test of a 2014 GMC Sierra, a four-wheel-drive crew cab with the shorter box and an identical twin of the Colorado's big Silverado brother, took place in the fall of 2013.

The competitors, therefore, are on equal footing. True, the week-long tests were completed two years apart, and temperatures and distances and roads travelled weren't identical. But over the course of a week, with real-world driving completed by the same driver, on a mix of city streets and highways, the 2016 Colorado 3.6L V6 drank at a rate of 11.7 L/100km; the Sierra 5.3L V8 achieved 12.8 L/100km.

But what does that difference of an additional litre over the course of 100 kilometres really mean for your fuel budget?

Let's say you drive 15,000 kilometres per year and pay $0.954/L for regular fuel as we are this week. In the Colorado V6, those 15,000 kilometres will cost you $1,674. In the Sierra, the cost will rise to $1,832, an annual difference of just $158, a monthly difference of only $13, a weekly difference of only $3, and a daily difference of only $0.43.

For the sake of emphasizing the difference, let's assume you drive 25,000 kilometres per year and the price of fuel will return to $1.45/L. In that case, the annual savings in the Colorado increases from $158 to a still hardly consequential $399.
2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 rear red
MSRP
It's highly unlikely that sitting on your local GM dealer lot are a Colorado and Silverado with identical interior equipment, let alone similar mechanical packages. But we can try to establish relative parity with GM's online configurator.

Our Colorado rings in at $42,680, the cost of a top-trim Z71 Crew Cab with the short (128.3") wheelbase and short (5'3") box with a $795 navigation system, a $920 exterior convenience package, a $275 trailering package, $215 chrome recovery hooks, a $155 polished exhaust tip, $120 cargo tie-down rings, $165 bowtie emblem package, a $525 spray-on bedliner, $685 Bose audio, and $175 floor mats. GM Canada is currently discounting the price by $1,164 to $41,516.

A 2016 Chevrolet Silverado with the biggest cabin, the shortest available bed (5'8"), and the mid-grade 5.3L engine option – the Colorado's 3.6L is the mid-grade engine in the midsize lineup now, between a four-cylinder gas engine and a new four-cylinder diesel – costs $41,020 but is then discounted by $7,985 to just $33,035. That's a bare bones Silverado, however. To equip the 2016 Silverado 5.3L 4x4 like our Colorado – the features mentioned above plus standard Z71 touches like the leather interior, 17-inch alloys, backup camera, heated front seats, off-road suspension, sliding rear window, and more – would cost $51,565. But that price is currently discounted to $43,580.

That's only an additional $2,064 for the more powerful, more capable truck, a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 1LT True North Edition

CONSIDERATIONS
But hold on a second, aren't there other factors to take into account?

On the one hand, there's what I like to call the Supersize The Fries theory. This is North America – we want more. If there's a bigger truck available, if it only costs a little bit more and only consumes a little bit more fuel, why not buy the bigger truck?

But on the other hand, there are individuals, admittedly rather few in number given the small/midsize pickup truck sub-category's market share, who wouldn't care if the Colorado cost just as much as the Silverado and consumed just as much fuel. It's a small truck. A fairly large small truck, yes, but it's clearly the smaller truck.
After spending two consecutive weeks with full-size pickup trucks earlier this month, the 2015 Ram 1500 Outdoorsman EcoDiesel and the 2015 Ford F-150 Platinum, the Colorado's interior felt cramped, the ride quality was a bit jiggly, power wasn't abundant at any point in the rev range, and I wasn't piloting an all-conquering force in traffic.

But I pirouetted the Colorado through grocery store parking lots, easily squeezed the Colorado into parking spaces that simply wouldn't have tolerated a much wider full-size truck, dove the Colorado across an eight-lane thoroughfare without batting an eye, placed the Colorado in our driveway with our Honda Odyssey without giving it any thought, travelled 100 kilometres in the Colorado using 1.1 fewer litres of fuel than in the bigger truck, and saved an imaginary $2,064 dollars.

All the while, I was safe in the knowledge that, if need be, the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado could still tow 7,000 pounds or live with 1,580 pounds in the bed. Sure, it's smaller. But the Colorado is still very much a truck.

Auto News For Monday, November, 16, 2015 - Volkswagen Dealers Need More Cars

2013 Land Rover Defender 5-door red
Here are the five must-read, must-watch auto news stories, recalls and videos for Monday, November 16, 2015.

VW
Against expectations, Volkswagen U.S. sales increased in October 2015, albeit modestly. Now, Volkswagen dealers have a new problem. They don’t have enough cars and Tiguans to sell.

AUTOFOCUS
This list of Canada’s 25 best-selling passenger cars through the first ten months of 2015 is packed at the top end with vehicles that aren’t selling as often this year as they did in 2014.

REVIEW
It was only last night that we saw an old Land Rover Defender waiting at the Eastern Passage Autoport in Nova Scotia to be loaded onto a ship headed for who knows where. There’s nothing like a Defender, which North Americans haven’t been offered for sale in many years, to give a Land Rover fan a true case of the wants. But what if you could have a Defender, what if you had the money to actually buy your own? Would you - or would the driving experience be too off-putting?

TTAC
Five crossovers from Chevrolet and GMC are as old as the hills. But they’re selling better than ever.

WATCH
Early reviews of the 2016 Nissan Titan XD are in, and the word from PickupTrucks.com’s Mark Williams is good. The Titan XD splits the difference between regular full-size trucks and their heavy-duty brethren, as Nissan attempts to find a larger niche to exploit in the booming truck market. So it’s good, but will anybody buy it?

Auto News For Tuesday, November 10, 2015 - Rolls-Royce Is Recalling One Ghost

2017 Cadillac XT5
Here are the six must-read, must-watch auto news stories, recalls and videos for Tuesday, November 10, 2015.

FUTURE

The Cadillac SRX is currently America’s second-best-selling premium brand utility vehicle, and 2015 is shaping up to be the crossover’s best sales year ever. Its replacement, the 2017 Cadillac XT5, is slightly longer, a little bit more spacious, and quite a bit lighter than the outgoing SRX. Standard power comes from a 3.6L V6 with 310 horsepower. When wearing 20-inch wheels, the XT5 will feature Cadillac’s Continuous Damping Control.

INSIDE THE AUTO INDUSTRY

If TrueCar’s estimates are anything close to correct, the $3,104 average incentive spend per vehicle in October 2015 worked out to nearly 10% of the price of an average new car acquisition. Which explains why October sales were 14% higher in 2015 than they were in 2014.

MPG
In 4x4 form, the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon will, when equipped with the new 2.8L Duramax diesel, be rated at 20 miles per gallon in the city and 29 mpg on the highway, tops among trucks. In Canada, the Office Of Energy Efficiency ratings for the 4x4 model will be 12 L/100km in the city; 8.2 L/100km on the highway.

TTAC

There are nearly two months remaining in calendar year 2015, yet it’s already certain that a handful of vehicles will end 2015 as their categories’ respective best sellers, so great is their dominance.

RECALL
BMW is recalling one 2015 Rolls-Royce Ghost. Just the solitary Ghost. One lonely Ghost. The car apparently, “has thorax air bags fitted to both front seats that may fail to meet the side impact performance requirements for the front seat occupants.”
