Last year at this time, Volvo Canada sales had dipped 16% to 380 units. While paying attention to Volvo's positive returns in October 2010, keep October 2008 at the front of your mind. In October 2008, Volvo Canada sold 453 vehicles.... and there was no XC60.
Set aside October 2009 for a moment longer. The long-in-tooth 2010 Volvo XC90 wasn't so long in the tooth two years ago. Volvo sold 133 XC90s in October 2008. Volvo also sold 150 of its small cars - the C30, S40, and V50 - whereas October 2010 only saw Volvo sell 91 examples of that trio in Canada. Yeah, the new XC60 is helping, and it's a good thing it is. Other Volvo models are being rejected like overcooked fish in a sushi bar. Sure, there isn't a huge market for hardtop convertibles, in October, in Canada, from Sweden, but Volvo managed to sell 12 of them last year. As in the U.S., you can be partially justified in claiming the 2011 Volvo S60 isn't in the full swing of things. But last month, when the swing had not fully swung, Volvo sold more S60s.
Volvo Canada sales were down in October 2009 when BMW and Mercedes-Benz and Audi all posted sales improvements over October 2008. This year, Volvo improved. But so did BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi. The rules of this game are changing, and it appears Volvo is not part of the rules committee. The game is moving on.

Nissan And Infiniti Canada Sales - October 2010
Fast-rising sales of the 2010 Nissan Altima helped Nissan Canada overcome declining Versa sales as Nissan posted its best ever October in Canada. 12 of 14 Nissan Canada models posted increases over October 2009 Nissan sales; the Versa and GT-R being the lone cars left out.
By its very nature, October was never going to be as strong as September 2010; the whole Canadian market was about 12,000 sales smaller in October than September. Nissan Canada sold 6134 vehicles in October 2010 and 7798 in September 2010. Year-to-date, Nissan Canada is up 4.2%. Nissan Canada market share is down from 5% to 4.9%. The Infiniti Canada sales recap from October 2010 is available after the jump.
Although Infiniti Canada's best-selling model, the G37 sedan; coupe; and convertible range, was slightly down in October 2010 compared with the same period of 2009, Infiniti grew its sales from September 2010 by 70 units in a month where the Canadian automotive market shrunk, as it always does at this time of year. Sales volume for the 2010 Infiniti EX35 stayed the same, Infiniti FX volume was down slightly compared with last month, but sales of the 2011 Infiniti QX56 are (relatively) hefty and Infiniti M and G sales jumped from September, too.
Before Cadillac and Lincoln are included, Infiniti is to be considered Canada's sixth most-popular luxury brand in October. Year-to-date sales at Infiniti Canada are up 17.2% through the end of October. Infiniti Canada's market share is level at 0.5%.

Canada Auto Sales By Brand - October 2010
*updated 11/17/10*
Honda Canada is getting closer but, as of the end of October 2010, hasn't yet overtaken Hyundai Canada in overall year-to-date sales. Honda trails Hyundai by 1458 units with two months remaining. Hyundai Canada has already made 2010 a record-setting year. Last year's 12-month total has already been surpassed by over 1400 sales.
The bigger story in October 2010 was Ford Motor Company's increasing sales. Up 8.1% on October 2009's totals, Ford car sales were up 18% and truck sales were up 5%. Of course, Ford is selling the Fiesta this year, a vehicle not on the market last year. But bigger volume is bigger volume, no matter how you shake it.
Canada's best-selling luxury brand in October 2010 appears to have been Germany's BMW. Cadillac and Lincoln haven't reported but are highly unlikely to surpass BMW or second-place Mercedes-Benz. Mercedes-Benz still leads BMW in overall sales for 2010. Luxury brands are bolded in the list below. Any brand suffering a decline is shown with italics. Speaking of the italics overlaying General Motors, it should be noted that, for the four brands remaining in GM's brand portfolio, sales were up 5.8% in October. Thank vehicles like the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze for that, although the heavily discounted 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt might have more to do with it.

Scion Canada Starts Out With 247 Sales In October 2010
Preliminary data from Toyota Canada says Scion sold 247 vehicles in its first full month of selling in Canada. Scion is only selling in the Greater Toronto Area, Vancouver, and Montreal. The Good Car Guy is on the record saying this probably isn't the best way to introduce a new car to Canada. Although Scion will undoubtedly pick up sales momentum (one would hope so, with only 247 sales in October 2010), and will find it easier to do so once expansion takes place in the spring of 2011, this first month seems disappointing. In light of all the social media hyping up Scion engaged in, 247 sales - equivalent to about one-quarter of all Toyota Yaris sales in Canada last month - sounds as though most people don't know Scion exists.
That, of course, will change dramatically once Canadians of all ages start seeing uniquely-designed Scions on roads across Canada.
Autumn isn't prime car selling season in Canada. Unleashing a new brand inside a brand which posted a huge sales decline in October 2010 - Toyota Canada sales were down 24.7% in October 2010 - in October with just three models and just three cities isn't easy. Perhaps Toyota is thrilled with 247 sales. If so, great. They know what they want and they know if this exceeded their expectations.... or not. At GoodCarBadCar.net, Scion Canada's initial sales volume would've come across a lot better if the number was over 500. There was a LOT of hype, after all.
