Small And Midsize Luxury SUV Sales In America - May 2015 YTD

May 2015 was the first full month of sales for Land Rover USA's new Discovery Sport. A replacement for the LR2 (formerly the Freelander) and not the LR4 (which is known as a Discovery in other parts of the world), the Discovery Sport is a 5+2 in a class full of five seaters.

440 copies of the Discovery Sport were sold in May. Land Rover USA has only sold more than 400 LR2s twice in the last five years.

If the Discovery Sport is to become the top-selling Land Rover in America, it'll need to routinely sell around 1500 units per month. But if it's to play among the big boys in its category, Land Rover will need to sell 4000 Discovery Sports per month. 

That's unlikely, but at 2000-2500 sales per month, the Discovery Sport will be an upper mid-level player in the small luxury SUV/crossover category, just ahead of former Ford PAG stablemates from Volvo (XC60) and Lincoln (MKC).

In May 2015, the Honda CR-V was America's best-selling SUV/crossover in America, the ninth consecutive month that the Honda led the overall SUV/CUV race and its own segment.

But CR-V sales decreased by a modest 1% in May 2015. Compared with May 2014, CR-V volume declined by 340 units after increasing by 6446 units over the first four months of 2015. Overall, however, Honda's small utility vehicle volume was far from harmed.

May 2015 was the first month of sales for the new Fit-based HR-V crossover, and Honda sold a whole bunch of them, 6381 of them to be precise. Incidentally, the HR-V was welcomed by its rivals with a number of impressive sales performances, as well. 

May was the third consecutive month above 5K for the Buick Encore (+21%), the best month yet for the Chevrolet Trax, the best month yet for the Jeep Renegade, a record month for the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, and the best month ever for the Subaru XV Crosstrek.
