Small/Entry Luxury Car Sales And Midsize Luxury Car Sales In America - October 2011

U.S. small luxury car sales chart October 2011
BMW 3-Series slid 9% in October 2011. The drop in volume of America's best-selling premium car wasn't significant enough for the Mercedes-Benz C-Class to grab top spot in the small luxury sector, even with the C-Class's huge 88% jump. C-Class sales are up 7% through the first ten months of 2011.

2012 Volvo C30 OrangeVolvo is killing off the S40 and V50. The other side of their triangle, Volvo's C30, was up 38% in October. C30 sales remain low, less than half what BMW has with the 1-Series despite the 1-Series' 40% cliff dive.

Moreover, C30 sales are down 17% this year. Volvo's good news is S60-centred. Sales of Volvo's most eye-catching current car are, at the very least, decent, and at most, 2519% better than S60 sales were last year.

Details on October U.S. sales of midsize luxury cars can be viewed after the jump.

Note: The Lincoln MKZ has moved below to the midsize luxury car group. Some larger cars remain in the small/entry segment breakdown, but that's mainly because their price and mission are more directly comparable to that of the class-leading BMW 3-Series.

U.S. midsize luxury car sales chart October 2011
Of the 17 cars in the midsize luxury car table below which could have posted declining year-over-year sales, 12 did so. Worst among these declines was the Acura RL's, a 91% plunge. Acura RL sales are off by 42% in 2011.

The Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class was an aging car last October. The new model has helped Mercedes-Benz post a 192% year-over-year increase in October 2011. The CLS finished October 108 sales ahead of the Audi A7.

Leading the overall segment in October was BMW's 5-Series. Normally, Mercedes-Benz's E-Class is the leader of the pack, but E-Class sales dropped 19% in October.

Note: the Lincoln MKZ has moved in to the midsize luxury car group. Some larger cars remain in the small/entry segment breakdown, but that's mainly because their price and mission are more directly comparable to that of the class-leading BMW 3-Series. The MKZ comes across as more of a competitor for the Lexus ES than the Lexus IS.

Small Luxury SUV Sales And Midsize Luxury SUV Sales In America - October 2011

2011 BMW X3
BMW only sold 99 X3 SAVs in October 2010. That awful month, caused by the onset of the first-generation X3's death, presented an opportunity for some fairly stunning year-over-year changes in October 2011. The second-gen X3 found 2321 buyers last month, a 2244% increase from October 2010's nearly nonexistent X3 volume.

The X3 wasn't the most popular small luxury SUV in America in October, however. The Mercedes-Benz GLK reported huge gains compared with last October, as well, and ended up beating the X3 by 173 units. The $35,600 Audi Q5 was another 116 sales above the GLK. At the top of the heap was the heftier $35,185 Cadillac SRX, sales of which are up 9% this year.

Sales details for these luxury utility vehicles are in the table below. Keep scrolling for a look at the pie chart which displays the market share for each of these nine premium utes and full analysis of midsize luxury SUVs and crossovers.

U.S. small luxury SUV sales chart October 2011
The Lexus RX, significantly less expensive than many of the midsize luxury utilities compared alongside, is a bit more expensive than many of the smaller luxury utilities from the above group. The RX has certainly convinced auto enthusiasts of its more boring qualities, yet each month the RX convinces thousands of buyers that it's worth every penny. RX sales plunged 22% year-over-year and it still saw off all midsize contenders by a minimum of 2600 units. The Cadillac SRX was more than 1700 sales back.

The Acura ZDX, Infiniti FX, and Lincoln MKT all suffered greater year-over-year losses than the RX. There were better stories: Volkswagen Touareg sales shot up 205%, sales of the new Mercedes-Benz M-Class jumped 45%, and the BMW X5 climbed 26%. Check out America's October 2011 midsize luxury SUV market share chart at the bottom of this post. All the sales details can be seen in the table after the jump.
