Used Car Review - Subaru Impreza (2012-2016)

This unnoticed model gets a finale review.

2012-2016 Subaru Impreza

History
The Subaru Impreza would always be remembered in this set-up: color blue body, gold rims, a huge spoiler, and an aggressive grille that is always driven in the harshest conditions that's shown on TV. What you don't know that there's a road friendly version which doesn't have the things (except for the color option) mentioned above which costs less and for the Japanese, available front wheel drive while the rest gets all wheel drive versions.

A regular version of the Impreza isn't available in the Philippine market until the third generation in 2008, prior to this date most models which were made available are the WRX and WRX STI. Despite the price tag, it became a hit for Motor Image Pilipinas and was common in the affluent areas of the metropolis. July 2012 saw the launch of the fourth generation Impreza but it is now trimmed to a choice of a sedan version, the hatchback is killed but resurrected as the XV while the WRX STI weren't given a redesign until 2014. Although its price hovers at the million peso range, it wasn't that a hit just like before.

At launch, Impreza models can be had with either a stick shift or a CVT, with the former option being killed in favor of a cheaper model in March 2014.

Value and Costs
Subaru models, with the exemption of its rally bred siblings, are known for their poor resale value, which is an advantage for the second hand car buyer. With a price range of P660,000-P980,000, this is a fine vehicle if you want something fun to drive yet uncommon among the city streets. Other similar sized vehicles of the same time period are sold in this range but they do not come with all wheel drive.

Compared to its Japanese rivals, maintaining one is somewhat pricier due to the presence of an all wheel drive system. A problem point of this vehicle is its air-conditioning system, which has a tendency to fail.

Exterior and Interior
While the front grille has an aggressive stance may look quiet for some, the rear has some resemblance over its XV brother. Sure, this is not the WRX STI model that you are staring at, but rather think of this as matured looking.

If you think that going for this vehicle will reward you with a special interior, think again. Although interior quality is excellent, it feels ordinary than before. Despite this, you get side airbags with curtain, cruise control, multi information display, HID headlamps, and an automatic climate control. Space is decent enough, which is a good thing.

Engine
Just like the model it replaced, it is powered by a 2.0 but now from a different engine family. The FB 2.0 4-cylinder with 148hp at 6,200rpm and 196Nm at 4,200rpm is all new, developed in 2010 (the EJ has been in use since 1989) and has seen usage in the Forester. Acceleration is decent enough, despite the conservative figures. Transmission options include a six speed manual or a continuously variable transmission.

Driving Impressions
Thanks to the ready all wheel drive, even when driving at high speeds on inclement weather, stability is there. As usual, handling is its forte especially that it is balanced when tackling corners and is stable when driven on a straight line. The suspension is tuned for fun driving, and that's a good thing. But for your usual city driving, this may prove too much.

Verdict
Despite the fact that its exterior may not look flashy and the interior isn't that premium feeling, the Impreza's skills lies inside, with Subaru's famed all wheel drive system and a communicative chassis, it is still one standout. However, there are rivals that does these things well, even if they are powered with just two front wheels.

The Good:
  • Still fun to drive
  • Available all wheel drive
  • Feature loaded
The Bad:
  • Bland design inside and out
  • Fuel economy
  • Cabin quality not that premium feeling
The Pick: Any variant will do

2007-2012 (Regular Hatchback)

Vehicle Overview
For the first time, Subaru had brought in regular (read: non-turbo) and turbo versions of the Impreza compact whose name is synonymous with the World Rally Championship and all wheel drive in a hatchback body. The regular hatchback and its WRX counterpart was launched first in November 2007 followed by the WRX STI in July 2008. This body style was discontinued in 2012 with the launch of the fourth generation Impreza and replaced somewhat by the XV although the WRX STI hatchback stayed until 2014 (by that time, it had dropped the Impreza name).

Depending on what you need, either a 2.0 or 2.5 turbocharged (with varying horsepower figures) engine is offered. The 2.0 models have a cruiser car-like personality since reaching upper revs will have the engine complain although this will unleash the vehicle's power. Choosing the 2.5 for the WRX and WRX STI models have different horsepower figures, with the WRX being quick but not scary quick for first timers and the STI packing that adrenaline rush. Since all cylinders are positioned horizontally, it feels balanced at any speed without that outside noise due to high levels of insulation. When it comes to driving this vehicle, it is a joy to drive and the suspension does not give passengers road imperfections that are transmitted (WRX and WRX STI models gain a different suspension setting) but fuel consumption is poor, due to a standard all wheel drive system.

Excellent interior quality greets occupants of the Impreza, alongside cabin space good enough for four people. When it comes to cargo carrying, the hatchback is a good pick especially that it is flexible enough.

What Should I Get
The R Sport is the regular version packs a 152hp 2.0 engine, all power amenities, dual airbags, ABS brakes, CD player with MP3 and auxiliary jack, stability control, fog lamps, rear spoiler, 60/40 fold rear seat, automatic climate control, alarm, keyless entry, and steering wheel audio controls with manual models having hill start assist. WRX models get a 230hp 2.5 engine and some exterior revisions plus it is only available with a five speed manual while WRX STI units have 300hp paired to a six speed manual, side airbags, leather seats, and some revisions inside and outside. November 2010 saw an update for the WRX STI (its lowly brother was discontinued) which shifted for the hatchback to an automatic transmission and added cruise control and Brembo brakes.

How Much Would It Cost Me
Prepare to shell out more than your average Japanese compact when it comes to maintaining one especially that Subaru maintenance is a bit higher plus the standard all wheel drive will make fuel consumption high. Although there are no reported issues with R Sport Imprezas, WRX and WRX STI have turbo issues so do inspect that one thoroughly. If fuel consumption is a priority, there are other better choices.

2009-2012 (Regular Sedan)

Vehicle Overview
Although the sedan body of the WRX and WRX STI exist, a regular non-performance version of the Impreza compact was introduced for the first time. The regular sedan and its WRX counterpart was launched first in April 2009 while the WRX STI replaced its lowly brother in November 2010 through a facelift model. Do take note the regular R Sport model was replaced by the fourth generation model in 2012 while the WRX STI stayed until 2014 (by that time, it had dropped the Impreza name).

An athletic choice in which it offers a sporty handling and the only one to be offered with all wheel drive. Used Car Review - Subaru Impreza (2008-2012)

Another car whose new generation exists gets the spotlight, courtesy of Myk Belmonte in which he shells out details of this car.

2008-2012 Subaru Impreza

History
Mention the name Subaru and you'll get images of a car of blue and white livery and driving at dirt tracks at blistering speeds. The vehicle that was described in our very first sentence for this article is the Impreza, both available in pedestrian and special (WRX and WRX-STI models) flavors.

Oddly enough, the vehicle, synonymous in sedan form back then, was first introduced in hatchback form in 2007, while the 4 door counterpart was released a year later. There is a weird reason for introducing the hatch first, but they said that it was due to the rather dismal performance in the World Rally Championship in the mid-2000s. What ever they said, there is a cult following for this vehicle, whether picking the high performance versions or the basic one.

Motor Image Pilipinas introduced the non-turbo versions of the Impreza for the first time in late 2007. Same with the world, trunkless versions came first while the one with a trunk arrived in 2009. Sales ceased in July 2012 with the fourth generation model being launched at that time. Let's recall the models available at that time: the normally aspirated RS both available in sedan (only AT) and hatchback (both MT and AT), the turbo flavored WRX and WRX-STI (these versions would be covered in a separate article).

Value and Costs
2.0 compacts, or basically any sedan with that displacement contemplated with a gas engine, get low residuals due to their gas guzzling nature. With that consequence, RS Imprezas can be purchased between P600,000-P900,000 and those wanting to be different can jump for joy. Good luck in unit hunting since this vehicle rarely pops out the classified block.

With the normal versions, cost of owning one is the same with other 2.0 compacts, but a tad higher due to the standard all-wheel drive. Google "Subaru Impreza problems" and searches are related to the 2.5 models (both non-turbo and turbo) but there is nothing to worry about since we do have the 2.0 as a sole option.

Exterior and Interior
This review covers both sedan and hatchback versions and let's deal first on their similarities. The snout appears that it is approaching inward that creates a front end that was chiseled. Widen lines in the side profile are present that reaches the rear portion. But this sentence would end their similarities, let's go on with their differences. They are different in their C-pillar to the back and an additional six inches for the sedan. While the rear of the hatch is nice to look at, the sedan is bland since we thought that Subaru designers were rushed with this model.

Inside, both of them are identical to one another when it comes to the control layout and dashboard design. There are some changes to remember, prior to the hatch's release, dark grey with a touch of scratch prone silver was the motif before the sedan's launch. An update in 2009 saw a change in interior color design, with black being the dominant color and a painted trim contemplating it. Quality is topnotch, and materials that were used are excellent and it is focused towards the driver. Knee room is impressive thanks to the low seat mounts and the dashboard design. Four is great but five is a crowd but when it comes to cargo carrying, the hatchback is easy to deal with while the sedan has a shallow trunk that limits carrying capacity.

Engine
Philippine market Imprezas get a normally aspirated 2.0 and a turbo 2.5 but lets focus on the former engine. If you want your engine normal, then you have only the EJ20 1,994cc 150hp at 6,400rpm and 196Nm at 3,200rpm as your only choice. With the cylinders arranged in a horizontal manner, it feels balanced at any speed with the cabin devoid of outside noises due to the high levels of sound insulation. To fully utilize the given horsepower rating, you must reach 6,400rpm to feel the rush of the engine. However, it does not like to be raced (there is a reason why the upper performance models exist) since it likes to cruise. The apparent weakness is the outdated four-speed automatic, with competitors making do with 5 speeds.

Driving Impressions
High or low speeds in a corner, the Impreza is fun to drive. Thanks to the suspension tandem and the standard symmetrical all-wheel drive, this one is less twitchy to drive. If you plan to remain in the city, the suspension has the capability of handling the worst roads without transmitting them to the occupants. Just remember the all-wheel drive set-up can give you a somewhat dismal fuel economy.

Verdict
For sheer driving fun at a lower price, or in a practical package, the Impreza is hard to beat. The suspension and drivetrain combination is hard to beat, plus the rally pedigree comes as a bonus. Rarity is evident especially in the limited advertisements in the classified sections of the Sunday editions of the dailies, but that what makes hunting a challenge.

The Good:
  • Available sedan and hatchback configurations
  • Unique all-wheel drive
  • Available WRX and WRX-STI variants (covered on a separate article)
The Bad:
  • Outdated 4-speed automatic
  • Bland looks compared to the WRX and WRX-STI
  • All wheel drive means disastrous fuel economy
The Pick: A well maintained stock unit will do the job
