October 2012 U.S. Small/Entry Luxury Car Sales And Midsize Luxury Car Sales

2013 Lexus GS350 F Sport riviera red
U.S. sales of the Cadillac CTS fell by 1574 units in October 2012. The new, less expensive Cadillac ATS didn't sell well enough to make up for the lost CTS sales. Year-over-year, the ATS and CTS duo was down 8% compared to the CTS's output last October.

Acura knows how Cadillac feels. But there's one key difference. Acura TSX sales plunged by 1400 units in October 2012, but the new, less expensive ILX filled in with 1529 sales. There may be an advantage to selling a smaller, less expensive, Civic-based sedan rather than a bigger, more expensive, Euro Accord-based car to American consumers, but until now we're not really seeing it. Year-over-year, the ILX/TSX pair was up 4% compared to the TSX's output last October.

Meanwhile BMW sold more than 10,000 copies of its two small cars, Mercedes-Benz sold 7636 C-Class sedans and coupes, and Lexus's three smallest cars fell 120 units short of Infiniti's G coupe and sedan total.

Audi reported its best A7 sales month since May, and was therefore able to outsell the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class by 169 units. Of course, Mercedes-Benz has an E-Class-sized trick up its sleeve. In what's been a tough year for the best-selling midsize luxury car in America, October was a bright spot, despite a loss to the much less costly Lexus ES. E-Class sales jumped 17%, and Mercedes-Benz's E/CLS total stood at 5864 units. That's nearly 2.5 times better than Audi's A6/A7 total.

Between the new ES and still-fresh GS sedan, Lexus sold 7492 midsize luxury cars in the United States in October 2012. The ES accounted for more than half of all Lexus passenger car sales and three out of every ten overall Lexus sales in October. The RX crossover remains the brand's top seller.

As will always be the case in the future, historic brand and corporate totals (monthly and yearly going back to 2002) are now available through the dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats page, along with results for more than 260 currently sold vehicles. That's where you'll find out that Cadillac ATS sales in October, the car's second month on sale, were 107% better than in September while Cadillac CTS sales fell 24% in the same period.

But after the jump you'll find detailed October 2012 and year-to-date U.S. sales figures for nearly three dozen luxury cars. If the car you're looking for isn't grouped together with these premium-priced vehicles, check out the large luxury car section or the mainstream alternative.
