Top 15 Best-Selling Luxury Vehicles In Canada - June 2016

In June 2016, for a second consecutive month, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class was Canada's best-selling premium brand automobile, 410 sales ahead of the next-best-selling premium car; 173 sales ahead of the second-ranked premium vehicle, Audi's Q5.

Through the first-half of 2016, the C-Class is Canada's luxury leader despite a 17% year-over-year sales decline. Canada's luxury SUV leader is the Mercedes-Benz GLE (formerly known as the M-Class) is a scant two units ahead of the Audi Q5, last year's top-selling premium SUV/crossover.

Among the 15 top-selling premium autos in June 2016, nine were SUVs/crossovers. Two of the six cars in the top 15 posted declining sales in June; only one of the nine utility vehicles did the same. 

Among vehicles with MSRPs above $50,000, the 13 leaders in June were all SUVs/crossovers, and 14 of the top 15. Incidentally, the only car that cracked that top 15 is decidedly out of the mainstream: Chevrolet's Corvette.

$50,000 CDN (before delivery) is an arbitrary borderline, but if GCBC was to follow this new system of designating only expensive vehicles as luxury vehicles, $50K seemed like a safe place to begin - it equals the approximate average U.S. new car transaction price plus $15,000, plus another $5000 to account for Canadian increases. Plenty of less expensive vehicles with specific models feature prices above $50,000 - M, RS, and AMG models come to mind, specifically - but in the case of this list, we know that none of the registrations were of cars priced below $50,000.

The Lexus RX's 11% year-over-year increase powered Toyota's most popular upmarket vehicle to a huge 1178-unit margin of victory over the second-best-selling premium brand vehicle in America in June 2016.

U.S. Vehicle Sales Rankings By Model - June 2016 YTD

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class, a scant 48 sales ahead of the third-ranked BMW 3-Series, continued as America's top-selling premium brand passenger car in June. But the majority of popular luxury vehicles in the United States aren't cars at all – they're SUVs or crossovers; CUVs or utility vehicles or whatever you choose to call them.

11 of the 15 top-selling premium brand vehicles in America in June 2016 were SUVs/crossovers, including pairings from Lexus, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Acura.

Among vehicles with price tags above $50,000, nine of the top 15 were utility vehicles. A number of the utility vehicle gains were significant. 

The Mercedes-Benz GLE, GLS, and GLC; Infiniti QX60 and QX80; BMW X3, and Audi Q7 all increased their June volume by more than 25% in a new vehicle market which grew just 2%.

$50,000 USD (before delivery) is an arbitrary borderline, upgraded in 2016 from $45K last year by $5K, but if GCBC was to follow this system of designating only expensive vehicles as luxury vehicles, adding approximately $20,000 to the average new car transaction price seemed like a fitting place to begin. Plenty of less expensive vehicles with specific models feature prices above $50,000 - M, RS, and AMG models come to mind, specifically - but in the case of the second list, we know that none of the registrations were of cars priced below that borderline.

In May 2016, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class recorded its first year-over-year sales increase in Canada since November of last year and easily outsold all premium brand rivals to end May as Canada's top-selling premium vehicle.

Year-to-date, the C-Class now leads Mercedes-Benz's own GLE SUV by 270 units in the race to end 2016 as Canada's top-selling luxury vehicle. The next-closest competitors are Audi and Lexus utilities: the Q5 and RX, both of which are on the upswing.

Through five months, the C-Class and its most direct rival, BMW's 3-Series, are down 21% and 25%, respectively, combining for 1846 fewer sales in the first five months of 2016 than during the same period one year ago.

Among vehicles with price tags above $50,000, May 2016's top six sellers were all SUVs/crossovers. Of the 15 leaders above $50,000, there were but three traditional passenger cars, including the Chevrolet Corvette.
