After Brexit: British Auto Brand Sales In The United Kingdom In 2016

2016 Bentley Mulsanne Blue
Jaguar and Land Rover are owned by Tata. Mini and Rolls-Royce are in BMW's hands. Bentley belongs to Volkswagen. Vauxhall is a General Motors outlet.

You get the picture. The "British" auto industry of 2016 has very little to do with specific "British" auto bands and everything to do with a large number of automakers, including Nissan, Toyota, General Motors, and Honda.

Top 10 Best-Selling Cars In The UK In 2015
Here's The State Of The British Auto Industry In America

Nevertheless, there remains a unique Britishness when it comes to a consumer considering the purchase of a new Bentley or Aston Martin.

With the UK's Brexit vote ending in a Leave result – the United Kingdom has chosen to leave the European Union – we thought there was no time like the present to look at the UK sales performance of traditional British brands in their homeland.

For perspective, we've also added the market share achieved by these very same brands in the United States. U.S. figures for Aston Martin and Lotus are estimates from Automotive News. "Other British" is a classification our source, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, uses to refer, presumably, to UK sales of other niche British brands, including Rolls-Royce.

For the record, Ford UK sold 52,476 copies of the best-selling Fiesta in the first five months of 2016.

After Brexit: Here's The State Of The British Auto Industry In America

2017 Jaguar F-Pace S
The UK's Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders is tasked with, according to the SMMT, promoting "the interests of the UK automotive industry at home and abroad."

Prior to the June 23 Brexit vote for the United Kingdom to leave the European Union, the SMMT insisted that voting remain was critical to the UK automotive industry. Brexit could jeopardise jobs, automakers were in agreement that remaining was important, and pointed to the UK's 800,000 auto industry jobs and its £15.5 billion contribution to the economy as reasons to stay in the European Union.

But the Brexit vote to leave, led largely by UKIP's Nigel Farage, produced a 52% in favour result, a margin of victory valued at 1.27 million votes. Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron will resign. Economic predictors, predicted to stabilize, rode a rollercoaster overnight. Says the SMMT's Mike Hawes today: "Government must now maintain economic stability and secure a deal with the EU which safeguards UK automotive interests. This includes securing tariff-free access to European and other global markets."

Securing such a deal will not be easy or quick, nor will subsequent free trade deals with other nations be immediately forthcoming. The actual Brexit process will be very long. Britons' EU passports didn't spontaneously combust early this morning.

In the meantime, therefore, much will continue as usual. The UK automotive industry will continue to build cars and send them tariff-free to other EU nations because, for now, the UK is still part of the EU. British-built cars and SUVs will continue to be shipped to North America under existing rules and regulations, as well.

And which cars and SUVs are those? These are the 15 best-selling British brand vehicles in America through the first five months of 2016.

Ferrari U.S. Sales In 2016: Better Than Hyundai Equus, Audi A4 Allroad, Volvo V60 CC, Acura RLX

2012 ferrari ff
How does one measure the sales success of a five-year-old luxury sedan from a mainstream automaker, a car which will soon be released in second-generation form under an all-new luxury banner?

Compare it with Ferrari, of course.

Through the first five months of 2016, Hyundai USA sold 904 copies of their Equus sedan, a 9% year-over-year decrease for the cut-price Mercedes-Benz S-Class alternative.

Just how rare does that make the Equus? According to The Wall Street Journal, Ferrari sold 960 cars in America during the same period.

We shouldn't pick on the Equus, sales of which are on track to fall to a six-year low in calendar year 2016. It was an experiement for Hyundai USA, one which ended with a new luxury brand: Genesis.
2014 Hyundai Equus
Note, however, that Hyundai's new luxury brand didn't take the name of Hyundai's most highfalutin luxury sedan, the Equus. Rather, the new Genesis brand represents a continuation of Hyundai's lower-rung and far more common Genesis sedan.

But the Equus is far from the only nameplate roundly outsold by a small fleet of Italian supercars with prices stretching from $200,000 northward.

GM's attempt at a two-seat Chevrolet Volt-based Cadillac, the cancelled ELR, and GM's attempt at an Aussie-based Ford Taurus Police Interceptor rival, the Chevrolet Caprice PPV, combined for 702 units in the first five months of 2016.

There are others. The transitioning Audi A4 Allroad. The largely ignored Volvo V60 Cross Country. The always ignored Acura RLX. The Hyundai Equus's Kia K900 platform-mate. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' own Alfa Romeo 4C, which finds one buyer for every 3.5 Ferrari sales. The Nissan GT-R, which sells at a rate similar to the 4C.

GCBC has a list, of course. Click the second-from-left column header – May 2016 YTD – to sort vehicles, auto brands, and automakers by year-to-date U.S. sales in this complete sales list. After sorting Ferrari is ten sales back of the discontinued Honda CR-Z. Unfortunately, Ferrari does not break down sales by model.

But we'll take the FF, thanks.

Small And Midsize Luxury SUV Sales In Canada - May 2016 YTD

2016 Audi Q3
A trio of compact German luxury crossovers showed up to a Canadian race in May 2016 and left with essentially the same scores.

Canada Vehicle Sales By Model - April 2016 YTD
Canada SUV/Crossover Sales By Model - May 2016 YTD

Only 13 sales separated Canada's top-selling compact luxury utility vehicle, the Audi Q3, from the lowest-volume vehicle in the trio, BMW's X1. The Mercedes-Benz GLA finished May only three sales back of the Audi; only ten sales ahead of the BMW.

Coincidentally, the year-to-date order is completely different but still spectacularly close. The GLA leads with 1970 sales thanks to a 62% year-over-year increase. The Audi Q3 ranks third in the class of three, only 21 sales back of the BMW X1.

These are all markedly improved numbers, but they remain relatively low-volume players compared with a much larger group of somewhat larger, more costly small luxury SUVs. Audi's Q5, Canada's top-selling premium utility vehicle in May and in 2015, outsells the Q3 by nearly two-to-one. The BMW X3 and X4 outsold the X1 by nearly 1100 units in 2016's first five months. Together with their direct and indirect rivals, the one-size-up luxury utilities are more than three times more common despite their larger price tags.

We've included the Jaguar F-Pace in the Audi Q5-led group of luxury SUVs even though it's on the larger end. The F-Pace is smaller than vehicles in the final table displayed below. It's also priced far more comparably to vehicles such as the Q5 and X3 rather than the Q7 and X5.

Besides the F-Pace, May 2016 was also the first month of availability for the Cadillac XT5, the direct successor to the lingering SRX.

You can click any model name in the tables below to find historical monthly and yearly Canadian auto sales data. You can also select a make and model at GCBC's Sales Stats page. GCBC isn't here to break down segments, an impossible task for any group, but to display sales data for the sake of comparison. The more ways sales data can be displayed, the better. This explains you'll see the XC70 listed with luxury cars as well as with SUVs and crossovers and the Touareg with luxury SUVs and mainstream SUVs... because readers have wanted it both ways. Large Luxury SUV Sales In Canada - May 2016 YTD

2017 Mercedes-Benz GLS63 AMG
Despite an industry-wide slowdown caused in part by May 2016's abbreviated Canadian auto sales calendar – which didn't begin until May 3, strangely – full-size luxury SUVs posted a 7% increase.

Canada Vehicle Sales By Model - April 2016 YTD
Canada SUV/Crossover Sales By Model - May 2016 YTD

Thanks to gains from the Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80, Lexus LX570, Lincoln Navigator, and Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class, sales of flagship luxury SUVs were on the rise as new vehicle sales declined. Indeed, this group of luxury SUVs grew faster than the overall SUV/crossover sector, which jumped 5.3% in May 2016.

Mercedes-Benz's re-launch of the GL-Class as the new Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class appears to be a successful one. 231 GLSs were sold in May, a 25% year-over-year increase.

Combined, the QX80, LX570, and Range Rover didn't sell as often as the GLS and only managed to tie Cadillac's improving Escalade.
