 BMW's X1 has been here for more than three years. 12,556 have been sold.

Mercedes-Benz's GLA is set to arrive shortly. Buick has been selling Encores for nearly two years, but to what extent does a Q3 customer wants an underpowered ugly duckling from a Detroit automaker? The Encore isn't unpopular: 629 were sold in August along with 990 copies of the Chevrolet Trax.

 These vehicles will be displayed in their own separate table once there's a large enough number of vehicles to support their own list. Far more popular than the X1 is Audi's Q5, the best-selling luxury brand utility vehicle in Canada. BMW is selling 1.9 X3s per X1 even in this year of greater X3 decline. 

No matter which way you look at it, Canadian interest in these vehicles is surging. No premium brand SUV or crossover puts up the kinds of numbers achieved by category leaders like the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, and Toyota RAV4. But it's not difficult to spot a marketplace shift when many of the automakers selling these vehicles didn't offer a single utility vehicle nameplate less than two decades ago. No Acuras, Audis, BMWs, Mercedes-Benzes, Porsches, or Volvos.

2013 Ford Escape green
Canadians registered 5081 Ford Escapes in August 2014, the fourth consecutive month in which more than 5000 Escapes were sold in Canada. During the same four-month span in 2013, an average of 4276 Escapes were sold each month. 9% of the SUVs and crossovers sold in Canada in August were Escapes.

With a very different take on how to approach buyers who don't want three rows of anti-minivan mommy crossover, Jeep's Wrangler attracted 2564 buyers in Canada in August, the fourth consecutive month in which Wrangler volume has climbed beyond the 2500-unit mark. (Jeep was selling fewer than 2100 Wranglers per month during that period in 2013.) 

The Wrangler ranks seventh overall among SUVs and crossovers in Canada, just 276 units behind its stablemate, the Dodge Journey, in year-to-date terms. 

In between those two extremes are numerous high-riding small utility vehicles, from the increasingly popular Nissan Rogue to the aging GM twins from Chevrolet and GMC, the Equinox and Terrain. Jeep also sold 2038 Cherokees and more than 1100 Compasses and Patriots in August. 

In addition to Ford's 5081 Escapes, Lincoln sold 358 MKCs. The MKC is an Escape offshoot, and it accounted for nearly half of Lincoln's Canadian volume last month.

Combined sales of the Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse, Dodge Durango, Ford Explorer, Ford Flex, GMC Acadia, Honda Pilot, Hyundai Santa Fe XL, Mazda CX-9, Nissan Pathfinder, and Toyota Highlander - three-row volume brand crossovers all - jumped 8% to 5431 units in August 2014.

A gain of 391 units across that broad spectrum compared with a 920-unit increase in sales of the Ford Escape, the 1190-unit increase of the Nissan Rogue, and the 892-unit improvement from the Toyota RAV4.

 Canadians do buy these large three-row crossovers in large numbers, increasingly large numbers in fact. But they don't represent the meat of the market. 

 August growth was powered a large chunk of the available nameplates, however. In that group mentioned in paragraph one, only the Santa Fe XL (down 12%), CX-9 (down 16%), and Highlander (down 19%) struggled to match last August's sales pace.
