Midsize SUV Sales In Canada - June 2016 YTD

2016 Mazda CX9
Reviewed by GCBC late last month, the new, second-generation Mazda CX-9 recorded 389 Canadian sales in June 2016, its first full month of availability.

June was the best month ever for the CX-9 nameplate. After averaging 114 monthly sales between 2013 and 2015, Mazda sold 697 CX-9s in a six-week span between the latter half of May and the end of June.

This isn't enough to make the CX-9 a top seller among three-row family crossovers from volume brands. Nor is the CX-9 about to be a top seller – Mazda simply doesn't have the production capacity.

Indeed, six weeks can't accurately predict the future of a nameplate. But we do see in the CX-9 how quickly Mazda can turn things around with one generation. Can they do the same with other new vehicles

Speaking of segment leaders, no three-row SUV/crossover sells more often in Canada than the Toyota Highlander, sales of which jumped 19% in June and 26% (to 6418) in the first-half of 2016.

Even more significant year-over-year improvements were recorded in the first-half by the Dodge Durango, Ford Flex, Honda Pilot, and Hyundai Santa Fe XL.

You can click any model name in the tables below to find historical monthly and yearly Canadian auto sales data. You can also select a make and model at GCBC's Sales Stats page. These tables are now sortable, so you can rank midsize SUVs and crossovers any which way you like. Suggestions on how GCBC should break down segments can be passed on through the Contact page.

GCBC isn't here to break down segments, an impossible task for any group, but to display sales data for the sake of comparison. The more ways sales data can be displayed, the better. This explains why you'll see the Wrangler and Xterra listed with small SUVs, too, and the Subaru Outback shown with mainstream cars... because readers have wanted it both ways. You can always find the sales results for EVERY vehicle and form your own competitive sets by using the All Vehicle Rankings posts.

Midsize SUV Sales In America - June 2016 YTD

2017 Hyundai Santa Fe
Hyundai's two and three-row Santa Fes posted a massive U.S. sales gain of 76%, worth 7899 additional sales, in June 2016. Increased U.S. production of the Santa Fe and smaller Santa Fe Sport translates to increased sales. Who'd have thunk it?

Among vehicles which come standard with a third row, the Ford Explorer's 10% June decline didn't stop the Explorer from being June's top seller, let alone prevent the Explorer from losing its huge year-to-date lead. Explorer sales are up 6% through the first-half of 2016. The next-best-selling three-row-only, the Toyota Highlander, is more than 47,000 sales abaft.

Simply offering a family-sized crossover for sale does not assure an automaker of increasing success in the United States in 2016, however.

GM's aged Lambda-platform utilities are all in decline in 2016. Constrained production has led to a 10% drop in Honda Pilot sales. Nissan Pathfinder sales are down 5%.

Mazda's second-generation CX-9 produced a 21% year-over-year surge in June. But the much improved CX-9 won't instantly become a hugely popular crossover. Mazda can't build many, so it's unlikely we'll see Mazda USA soon sell more than 3500-4000 per month. June 2016 was the CX-9's best month since May of last year.

Midsize SUV Sales In Canada - May 2016 YTD

2017 Mazda CX-9 grey rear
Given the overall new vehicle market's slowdown in May 2016, caused in part by an abbreviated sales month, Canadian sales of small SUVs and crossovers were rather healthy, rising 4% despite the market's downturn.

Yet their bigger brethren, thanks to big gains from the Ford Explorer and Ford Flex, Hyundai Santa Fe XL, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Kia Sorento, Mazda CX-9, Nissan Murano, and Toyota 4Runner, posted even more substantial improvements on the percentage scale.

Year-over-year, all the aforementioned nameplates increased by at least 20% in May 2016.

The Ford Explorer's big May – and the Toyota Highlander's 1% drop – means the Ford is now within 34 units of catching the Highlander in the three-row SUV sales race. Ford's three-row numbers have been strengthened of late by big Flex sales figures. 1255 Flexes were sold in the March-May period, up 84% from 682 one year ago.

Meanwhile, at Ford's former Mazda partner where the first-generation CX-9 shared much with Ford Motor Company vehicles, the second-generation CX-9 arrived at dealers at the tail end of May and generated the nameplate's best-ever May results.

At only 308 May sales, the CX-9 was a relatively rare sight in comparison with the Explorer, Highlander, and Santa Fe XL. But we expect the new CX-9 to become a far more common sight over the coming months. And we'll review one soon.
