Compact Luxury Car Sales And Small/Entry Luxury Car Sales In Canada - September 2010

The Good Car Guy has often been exultant when describing sales of the BMW 3-Series. Globally, the 3-Series is a power. In the UK, it's not uncommon to see the 3-Series as a Best Seller. Not only did the 2010 BMW 3-Series land at #9 on the Canadian Best-Selling Cars list in September, though; the 3-Series also laid hold on an impressive 52.6% increase over September 2009 sales levels.

Of cars mentioned in the Graphs below, the following models also posted sales increases compared with September 2009: Acura TSX, Audi A4, Cadillac CTS, Lexus HS250h, Mercdedes-Benz C-Class, and Volvo S60. Speaking of the 2011 Volvo S60, it's been shifted from its place in the Midsize Luxury Cars group, in part due to its Canadian base MSRP of $45,450, about the same as a BMW 328i xDrive.

Compact Luxury Car Sales And Small/Entry Luxury Car Sales In Canada - August 2010

BMW doesn't just sell more 3-Series sedans, coupes, and wagons than any other luxury automaker; BMW sells a lot more 3-Series luxury cars than any other luxury automaker. There have been months over the course of 2010 in which Mercedes-Benz put up a challenge with the C-Class. But then there have been months like August 2010, a month in which Mercedes-Benz would have needed BMW 3-Series sales to suffer a 63% drop just to match up. 

Not. Gonna. Happen. BMW 3-Series sales actually jumped 11% from August 2009's totals. Mercedes-Benz C-Class sales fell 24.2% from August 2009 levels. The next closest rival, Audi's A4, posted a 26.6% increase but was found 890 units behind the almighty BMW.

Among smaller luxury cars, BMW's lead isn't so vast. Yet overtaking the BMW 1-Series wouldn't be nearly as exciting. (Read: "B-Class, Mercedes-Benz" in the Graph below.) The volume put up by Compact Luxury Cars in both Canada and the USA barely shows up on the monthly Sales Stats roundup. Meanwhile, The Good Car Guy published an article this morning listing Britain's Top 10 Best-Selling Cars from August 2010, and the Audi A3 was in tenth spot. GoodCarBadCar.net is an official fan of the A3. But.... whaaaaa? The A3's slice of the car market in Canada in August was 100 of 62,122. Even the far more successful BMW 1-Series (with sales falling 23% in August) barely incubates recognition in Canada.

COMPACT LUXURY CAR SALES AND ENTRY LUXURY CAR SALES IN CANADA - JULY 2010

Last week, Autoblog's review of the 2010 Lexus HS250h was halfway to scathing. In that light, should we be surprised to see Toyota Canada only sold three Lexus HS hybrids in July 2010? Well, actually, we should be a little surprised. Lexus sold 63 the month before, 59 in May, 92 in April, and 73 in March. Is there another explanation besides the HS's horrible ugliness starting, relatively underwhelming fuel efficiency, mildly anemic powertrain, and bloated base price? Did Lexus fail to notify GoodCarBadCar.net that they'd stopped importing the HS250h? Hmm?

Imagine Saab's return to the Canadian market brought about 184 sales of the 9-3 in July. Then, combine the 9-3's sales with those of the Volvo S40 and V50, as well as the Acura TSX, Cadillac CTS, Lexus IS, and Lincoln MKZ. BMW's 3-Series would still be more successful. And guess what? Saab ain't about to sell 184 9-3s a month in Canada. Saab Canada sold 627 in Canada in 2009. The Graphs below record July 2010 sales volume of every small luxury car.
