Rapid growth in Canada's pickup truck market continued apace in June 2016 as the segment-leading Ford F-Series jumped 40% and four midsize pickups also combined for big gains.

The F-Series' 40% increase translated to 3819 additional sales compared with June 2015, producing a market share improvement of seven points – from 31% to 38% – in part because the Ford's two chief rivals both flatlined.

Small/midsize pickup truck sales grew 27% to earn just under 8% of the overall Canadian pickup truck market. 

We continue to await proper figures from the new Nissan Titan, which in XD form, is proving decidedly uncommon. Total Titan volume plunged by more than half in June 2016.

Overall, Canadian pickup truck sales jumped 15% in June and 13% in the first-half of 2016, year-over-year improvements of 4521 and 22,012 units, respectively.

Canadian pickup sales rose slightly less than 1% in May 2016 thanks exclusively to big gains from the two segment leaders. 

Ford's F-Series, the best-selling vehicle in Canada and the best-selling line of full-size trucks, jumped 22% to 12,803 units, the Ford's fifth consecutive year-over-year monthly sales increase.

That fact, in addition to the midsize-leading Toyota Tacoma's 46% uptick, brought total pickup truck sales volume up by a couple hundred units despite the declines reported by every other pickup truck nameplate.

There is one key reason May 2016 was not as productive as May 2015 across the industry. The auto sales calendar is not the same as the calendar on the back of your office door, and  "May" didn't start until May 3, 2016, shortening the auto sales month. 

The shorter sales month explains some of, for instance, the GMC Sierra's 18% decline, but far from all of it. GMC and Chevrolet have not been able to grow their full-size truck sales in 2016 with any real strength as Ford absolutely takes control of the sector. In May, Ford's market share among full-size trucks rose to 41%, up from 34% a year ago.

Top 13 Best-Selling Pickup Trucks In Canada - November 2015 YTD

Blame for the Canadian auto industry's 3% November 2015 pickup truck sales decline can be cast squarely at the feet of the two most popular vehicles in Canada: Ford's F-Series and the Ram P/U. 

F-Series sales slid 11% to 8253 units in November 2015, a year-over-year decline of more than 1000 units. Sales of the Ford's key Ram competitor plunged 18%, a 1215-unit decline.

Total full-size pickup truck volume thus dropped 6% despite increases from GM's full-size twins, the Toyota Tundra, and the Nissan Titan. 

Combined sales of the GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado climbed 6% to 7890 units, 2246 more sales than the Ram managed. Year-to-date, the GM twins now lead the second-ranked Ram by 8483 sales, a sharp increase from the 3556-unit lead the twins had generated through the first 11 months of 2014.

Though the full-size pickup truck market was noteworthy for its decline in November, the small/midsize truck segment which accounted for just 8.3% of all pickup sales jumped 50% to 2,082 sales. 59% of the small/midsize category's sales were generated by the Toyota Tacoma.

All five of Canada's five top-selling pickup trucks in May 2015 were full-size machines, but it was the midsize fleet that drove the overall category forward.

Year-over-year, small/midsize pickup truck sales jumped by 844 units, a 53% gain, to 2433 May sales. Full-size truck volume decreased 1.5%, on the other hand, as a result of the Ford F-Series' sharp 17% decline.

The F-Series was still Canada's best-selling pickup truck and best-selling new vehicle line overall, but its lead shrunk to just 975 units in May 2015 - the best ever May for the second-ranked Ram P/U - after totalling more than 3500 units in May 2014.

GM's full-size twins jumped 13% to 9835 sales in May. Their smaller siblings, the Colorado and Canyon, outsold the class-leading Toyota Tacoma by 74 units. They lead the Tacoma by 303 units year-to-date, having earned 44% of the sub-segment's sales.

Canadian sales of full-size pickup trucks rose 3% to 29,569 units in April 2015, equal to 93.2% of the overall pickup truck market.

The Ford F-Series is Canada's best-selling truck line - and Canada's best-selling vehicle line overall - and outsold the next-best-selling Ram P/U by 2461 units; GM's full-size twins by 1045 units. All of Canada's five best-selling trucks in April 2015 were full-size nameplates.

Canadian sales of small/midsize pickup trucks, meanwhile, jumped 48% to 2161 units. That massive jump still didn't translate to a significant market share tally, but the new GM trucks did manage to power the segment, earning greater market share than the top-selling midsize truck, Toyota's Tacoma.
