Commercial Van Sales In Canada - June 2016 YTD

Canadian sales of commercial vans jumped 12% in the first-half of 2016, a gain of 2275 sales for a category which is gaining nameplates, not just sales.

Compared with the first-half of 2015, full-size vans have increased their share of the commercial van market from 77% to 79%. 46% of the full-size vans sold are Fords, including 5095 copies of the class-leading Ford Transit.

Ford is also the leader in the small commercial van category. The Transit Connect is down 6% in 2016 – there are more rivals available now than there were a year ago.

One such rival is the larger Mercedes-Benz Metris, which arrived late last year. 635 copies of the Metris were sold in the fist six months of 2016. 

That places the Benz behind every small van aside from the Chevrolet City Express, itself a twin of the Nissan NV200.

Canadian commercial van sales jumped 35% to 4363 units in May 2016, a year-over-year increase equal to 1136 additional sales.

The strength of full-size vans caused the growth. Full-size nameplates, led by the Ford Transit, owned 86% of the overall sector thanks to a 44% year-over-year increase to 3742 sales, 46% of which were produced by Ford.

The full-size Ford duo weren't the only vans to post meaningful increases in May. The Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana twins jumped 115% to 1149 units.

Mercedes-Benz, meanwhile, earned 14% of Canada's commercial van sales in May 2016 thanks to a third consecutive month of 100+ Metris sales and the Sprinter's second year-over-year increase this year.

Commercial Van Sales In Canada - November 2015 YTD

The Ford Transit produced 949 Canadian sales in November 2015, a 352% year-over-year improvement equal to 739 additional sales compared with November 2014. Ford owned 43% of the overall commercial van market in Canada in November, up 14 percentage points, year-over-year.

Combined, GM's two full-size commercial vans trailed the Transit by 83 units. General Motors' total commercial van market share fell to 30% from 34% a year ago.

FCA's Ram division owned 11% of the segment's November 2015 volume, a far cry from November 2014's 17%. Mercedes-Benz, with the smaller Metris now tagging along with its Sprinter big brother, similarly grabbed 11% of the segment. Scraps were picked up by two Nissans.

The Metris's arrival shakes up an already shaken small commercial van category. Larger than established small vans but not as big as the Sprinter, the Metris aims to squeeze through a gap it's creating for itself. 

The Sprinter proved that Mercedes-Benz, via its old DaimlerChrysler partnership with Dodge initially, could succeed outside of the Canadian luxury arena. Will the Metris do the same?

After surging 42% through the first four months of 2015, Canadian sales of commercial vans tumbled 17% in May 2015 because of sharp declines at General Motors, the near disappearance of the Ram Cargo Van, and a decrease from the leading small commercial van, as well.

GM's full-size twins, the Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana, jointly fell 61%, a loss of 828 sales, year-over-year. GM added only 48 sales of the smaller, Nissan NV200-based Chevrolet City Express.

Total Ram commercial van volume decreased by marginally despite ProMaster growth and an additional 183 ProMaster City sales because of the Grand Caravan-based Ram Cargo Van's 98% drop. The Ram Cargo Van is based on the outgoing version of the Windsor, Ontario-built minivans that haven't been built for much of this year.

Ford Transit Connect sales then tumbled 15% in May 2015. Nevertheless, overall Ford commercial van volume was up 3% in May 2015 because of the second-best month yet for the new full-size Transit, the E-Series successor. Ford owned 44% of the overall Canadian commercial van category, up from 35% a year ago.
