Small And Midsize Luxury SUV Sales In Canada - February 2014 YTD

2012 Mercedes-Benz ML
The $62,900-$98,500 BMW X5 continues to stand above all other premium brand utility vehicles in terms of total Canadian sales in 2014. February 2014 X5 volume was more than triple what BMW Canada managed in February 2013.

The X5's closest challengers are far more affordable, but their February gains were slight or nonexistent. Audi sold 484 Q5s, a 5% improvement; Lexus RX sales were level at 449. Fewer than one out of every 20 RXs sold was an RX450h.

The Q5 and some of its small, entry-level rivals combined for a 3% year-over-year decrease in February 2014 as sales of the Acura RDX, BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLK, and Volvo XC60 declined.

Volvo hasn't sold more than 100 XC60s in a single month since November.

Meanwhile, sales of many X5 rivals improved last month. Acura MDX volume was up 85%. The Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne, and Volkswagen Touareg triumvirate combined for 400 sales, a 14% increase. The Mercedes-Benz M-Class was up 35%. Range Rover Sport sales jumped 55%. Sales of the Lexus GX almost doubled.

You can click any model name in the tables below to find historical monthly and yearly Canadian auto sales data. You can also select a make and model at GCBC's Sales Stats page. These tables are now sortable, so you can rank small and midsize luxury SUVs and crossovers any which way you like. Suggestions on how GCBC should break down segments can be passed on through the Contact page.

Not all luxury automakers were immune to the decline of Canada's passenger car market in February 2014.

BMW brand car sales slid 17%, but the 3-Series continued as Canada's top-selling premium brand vehicle last month despite the nameplate's 5% drop. Lincoln car sales were down 10% as the MKZ's 132% increase, a 33-unit increase, was counteracted by the MKS's 85% decline.

The MKS, along with the Infiniti Q70 (formerly M) was among Canada's 20 worst-selling vehicles when ranked by year-over-year percentage decline in February. Infiniti's newer Q50, however, helped the brand to a 52% increase in passenger car sales.

Ranked by volume, the Volvo S80 and Hyundai Equus joined the MKS and Q70 as some of Canada's worst-selling vehicles.

Acura car sales fell 21%, Audis cars were down 3%, Porsche cars slid 22%, and Volvo's car branch dropped 8%. The V60 has not yet provided Volvo dealers with a substantial volume increase. The XC70, in fact, has been the more popular Volvo wagon in 2014. Excluding the V60, which wasn't on sale at this time last year, Volvo's car branch was down 28%.

Nevertheless, a handful of newer models like the Mercedes-Benz CLA, big gains from cars like the Lexus IS, and a bit of a surge from the Cadillac ATS helped the lower price and size bracket of luxury cars to a slight 2.5% year-over-year sales increase in February 2014. Bigger and/or more expensive luxury cars, including full-sized machines like the Cadillac XTS and Hyundai Equus which are priced more in line with mid-priced models, were down 16%.

Sporty Car Sales In Canada - February 2014 YTD

February 2014 was the second consecutive month in which Canadians registered more new Chevrolet Corvettes than Chevrolet Camaros.

Of course the Corvette's newer. It's faster. It's better. But it's also far more expensive, with a base price 85% in excess of the Camaro's. South of the border, where the market for both these cars is a great deal larger, Chevrolet has sold 2.3 Camaros per Corvette through the first two months of 2013. Canadians, who haven't had a great deal of love for the Canadian-built Camaro since the nameplate returned in 2009, love the Camaro on a progressively sliding scale. Sales fell 47% from 2010 to 2013 and are down 18% year-to-date.

With 92 sales in the middle of winter, the Corvette outsold affordable performance cars like Hyundai Genesis Coupe, Subaru BRZ, and Scion FR-S, sold more than twice as often as the Mazda MX-5 Miata, Dodge Challenger, Infiniti Q60, and sold more than three times as often as the Porsche 911, Jaguar F-Type, Mercedes-Benz SLK, and Audi TT.

The TT is set to be replaced in the coming months by a car that, not surprisingly, looks a lot like a TT. The interior, pictured above, is where the new car will move the yardsticks forward, particularly in the gauge cluster.

GCBC isn't here to break down segments, an impossible task for any group, but to display sales data for the sake of comparison. The more ways sales data can be displayed, the better, right? This explains why you'll see the Audi A5 here and with luxury cars, because readers have wanted it both ways. You can always find the sales results for EVERY vehicle and form your own competitive sets by using the All Vehicle Rankings posts. Clearly GoodCarBadCar is not suggesting that the cars in the two tables above are all direct competitors. Establishing categories among cars as unique as even the Audi TT and Porsche Boxster has never pleased a single reader, so cars have been lumped together so you can simply see how buyers looking for sports cars, roadsters, hot hatches, convertibles, GTs, and wanna-be sports cars spend their money. Greater categorization of cars would only lead to problems that automakers create by not isolating model-specific sales figures: we don't know how many M3s BMW has sold or how many Civics are Si models, for example. The numbers we do have are listed above. GoodCarBadCar is always open to hearing about the ways you would break down segments, so feel free to get in touch.
