UK Auto Sales By Brand - 2010 Year End

The Good Car Guy doesn't profess to be an expert on the UK new car market. Rather than offer up extensive analysis on what you see below, this table has been uniquely configured to let you know what you want to know: how the UK car market compare with the U.S. car market. In the far right, you'll see the 2010 Year End ranking for each brand from the U.S. Auto Sales By Brand post. As you'll see, some automobile manufacturers fare similarly in the United Kingdom and the United States, Ford most notably. Other Detroit-run brands, in addition to Lexus and Subaru as examples, are little-known in the UK but strong in the U.S.

Then there are those British brands which we in North America know as niche players. But in Britain? Mini, Land Rover, and Jaguar all finish far higher up the UK standings than in the U.S. Also, you might have to do some Googling. Perodua? Ssangyong?

This is the wrap-up of UK Auto Sales By Brand for 2010.

Top 10 Best-Selling Cars In The UK - September 2010

New car sales in the UK were down 8.9% in September, a number that's affected by the Brits' own Scrappage Incentive Scheme. UK new car sales are up 7.8% for the calendar year, however.

There's no need to bother comparing the figures below listing the UK's best-selling cars with the American or Canadian counterpart. For context, nonetheless, consider a few simple facts. The SMMT expects the UK car market to be about 2,000,000 units strong in 2010. In the United States, Ford alone - not the whole of Ford Motor Company but just Ford - sold 1,304,748 in the first nine months of the year. Add to that 1,638,544 General Motors sales in the USA through September 30th and you've got your context.

The Top 10 Best-Selling Cars in the United Kingdom in September 2010 are as follows.

#10 - BMW 1-Series: 5896
The 1-Series range delivered to North America is very limited. In the United Kingdom, for instance, the 2010 BMW 1-Series range includes the coupe and convertible but starts out with three and five-door hatchbacks.

#9 - Ford Mondeo: 6075
Heard of Ford Of Europe's cars getting North Americans excited? The 2010 Ford Mondeo is one such car that ignites passion from Detroit's domestically disenchanted. Good-looking and pleasant to drive, the Mondeo isn't even available as a sedan saloon in Great Britain. Hatchback and wagon lovers only, please..

#8 - Peugeot 207: 6918
Multiple bodystyles (including a hardtop convertible and a wagon) help make this small Peugeot a popular car in a whole bunch of markets. But if you think this 207 is small, try the 107, a Peugeot hatchback that shares everything but its badge with the Toyota Aygo and Citroen C1

#7 - Mini: 7187
Mini's portfolio is about to be broadened with the $22,350 Countryman SUV/CUV in the USA, but in the UK, the basic Mini already possesses a greater model range. For starters, there's a diesel. There's also the 75-horsepower Mini First, 98-horsepower Mini One, and the fuel-starving Mini One Minimalist.

#6 - Volkswagen Golf: 7228
Sales of the sixth-generation VW Golf stood at 44,399 in the UK through September 2010. This compares with half that many in the USA so far this year, as reported on GoodCarBadCar.net this morning.

#5 - Vauxhall Insignia: 7250
Far more successful than its long-lost American brother, the Buick Regal, the Insignia is easily the largest car in the UK's top 5 most popular cars in September 2010.

#4 - Ford Focus: 10,100
The 2012 Ford Focus will have a base price of $16,270 in the USA. In the UK, the current 2010 Ford Focus has a base price of £15,195. Don't even bother trying to apply traditional currency calculations.

#3 - Vauxhall Astra: 12,655
Though parked at #3 in September, the Astra is the UK's second most popular car in 2010 through the first three-quarters of the year. At 66,104 sales, however, there's no catching the Fiesta which ended September at 85,941 sales.

#2 - Vauxhall Corsa: 14,249
Could General Motors' small car presence in North America ever replicate what goes on in Europe? The 2012 Aveo is surely handsome, but fuel prices would have to skyrocket for the Aveo to overtake the Malibu, let alone the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry.

#1 - Ford Fiesta: 19,078
We're apparently still waiting on proper supply levels in North America. Britons aren't hindered when they wish to acquire a new Ford Fiesta. Only 3050 were sold in the United States in September.

GALLERY - PEUGEOT RCZ - 43 PICTURES

Although GoodCarBadCar.net isn't an active follower of Peugeot, The Good Car Guy always keeps his eye on the happenings in France. Lately, that's involved a lot of wide-mouthed Mazda 3-like grimaces paired with driving dynamics that weren't/aren't up to Peugeot's normally high standards. One look at this RCZ and any North American auto scribe will feel as though Peugeot's designers know their way around pencil and paper. Or AutoCAD.

The 308 RC Z concept Peugeot from Frankfurt's 2007 auto show was shocking and realistic at the same time. Holding true to the concept, this production car keeps the double-bubble roof. Contrasting aluminum roofrails accentuate the Audi TT similarities, bearing in mind that the overall proportions are very mid-engineesque.

Of the engine choices, high horsepower lovers must be satisifed with 200 horsepower. Another gas-powered engine with 156 horsepower will obviously save money while a 163-horsepower diesel offers a great thumping load of torque: 236 lb-ft of twist, in fact.

Moving inside, the coupe's more proletarian origins come to light. Although thoughtfully designed, this is no BMW Z4. Like the Nissan 370Z bumping up against the Porsche Boxster, the RCZ strikes the Audi TT from beneath.

With great confidence we can predict the complete absence of the Peugeot RCZ on North American roads. The world wide web's power still enables you to see 43 pictures of the Pug in the Gallery below.

PEUGEOT'S LE MANS DRIVERS

It ought to be a matter of national pride for Peugeot, not to mention the disturbing nature of absolute German dominance at France's most famous race, the 24 Hours of Le Mans.  Audi  won this classic race in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007.  Although Bentley - a Volkswagen subsidiary just like Audi - took the title in 2003, it was with Audi's help.

1996, '97, and '98 were Porsche's years whilst 1999 was BMW's.  The most recent French company to win was indeed Peugeot, but that was 1993.

Thus, Peugeot is ready to battle again.  This year, they'll be majoring on the drivers as seriously as the cars.  Ask any casual Le Mans follower about previous winners and you will inevitably be told about car companies; not drivers.  If Peugeot manages to wrest the Heures du Mans crown from Audi this year, the drivers will be remembered.

Jacques Villeneuve, Christian Klien, Alex Wurz, Pedro Lamy, Franck Montagny, Marc Gene, and Ricardo Zonta all sound good.  World Rally man Stephane Sarrazin and ex-Formula 3000 racer Nicolas Minassian should help the cause.  For those keeping track, that's three Frenchmen, one French-Canadian, and not a single German.

Peugeot's current showrooms are not full of models that could be easily linked to a win at Le Mans.  Like Audi (which uses lines like, "Audi is a trailblazer when it comes to diesel power. Since 1989, over 4.5 millions cars have rolled off the production line with the highly efficient TDI technology under the bonnet. By equipping the R10 TDI sports prototype with this technology, we have just won the 24 Hours of Le Mans with a diesel-powered car for the second time") Peugeot is opting for diesel power in their Le Mans racer and it is on this point that Peugeot can claim 'trickle-down' effect and exercise marketing heft. Peugeot and its sister company Citroen are indelinly linked to diesel engines, and rightfully so.
