Top 20 Best-Selling Cars In Canada - June 2016

2017 Ford Fusion white
The Honda Civic further secured its place as Canada's best-selling car in calendar year 2016 by expanding its year-to-date sales lead to 7682 units at the halfway point.

Civic sales rose 3% to 6232 units in June. The next-best-selling Toyota Corolla didn't crack the 5K marker. Hyundai's Elantra, the second-best-selling car in Canada so far this year, jumped 45% but trailed the Civic by 1416 units in June alone.

Auto sales in the sixth month of 2016 rose to the highest June level in the industry's history, but passenger car sales specifically were down 3%, a loss of some 2000 units. The Civic and Elantra weren't the only popular cars immune to the sector's decline, however.

The Ford Fusion jumped 70% to 2440 units, the Fusion's best month since July 2011. Even the Chrysler 200, which may not be on sale at this time next year, posted a 27% gain. The Toyota Camry, Canada's top-selling midsize car and America's best-selling car overall, posted a 4% June gain north of the border.

Top 20 Best-Selling Cars In America - June 2016

2016 Nissan Sentra red
For the fourth time this year and the ninth time in the last year, the Toyota Camry was America's best-selling car in June.

Despite a 13% year-over-year decrease valued at a loss of more than 4800 sales and a 11% increase from the second-ranked Honda Civic worth nearly 3100 sales, the Camry outlasted the Civic with a 751-unit margin of victory.

Though Camry sales plunged, five of America's six best-selling cars posted year-over-year improvements. Indeed, among the top 20 best-selling cars, year-over-year increases weren't terrible rare, a healthy sign given the passenger car market's recent downturns.

11 of the 20 most popular cars in America in June 2016 recorded year-over-year improvements. Through the first five months of 2016, only nine of the 20 top-selling cars in America were on the upswing.

June's best improvements belonged to the Nissan Versa and Chevrolet Impala, both of which jumped by more than 40%. The Nissan Sentra and aforementioned Civic both posted double-digit percentage gains, as well.

Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for any of these best-selling cars can always be accessed through the dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats page, and for those not viewing the mobile version of this site, near the top right of this page, as well. Top 20 Best-Selling Cars In Canada - May 2016

2016 Honda Civic sedan white
Although Canada's second, third, fourth, and fifth-best-selling cars all sold less often in May 2016 than in May 2015, the top-selling Honda Civic posted a 10% year-over-year sales increase. For the Civic, this produced 8240 May sales, the first month since March 2011 in which Honda Canada sold more than 8000 Civics.

11% of the passenger cars sold in Canada in May were Civics. South of the border, the second-ranked Civic and best-selling Toyota Camry combined for 11% market share among passenger cars.

It wasn't just the Civic's top-selling rivals which declined. The majority of Canada's most popular cars sold less often this May than last. 13 of the top 20 cars posted declining sales in May 2016, a month in which the Canadian car market slid 13%.

Some of the harshest declines were reported by some of the most popular cars. The Chevrolet Cruze and Ford Focus, Canada's two-top-selling Detroit car nameplates, tumbled 58% and 42%, respectively.

Camry volume plummeted 16%, a year-over-year loss of 6921 sales. A portion of that decline can be blamed upon the shorter sales month: May 2016 had 24 selling days, down two from a year ago.

But the Camry's decline can't solely be blamed upon the shorter sales month, which would result in 7.7%, 3373-unit loss if the daily selling rate stayed the same.

Likewise, the declines reported by the Nissan Altima, Ford Fusion, Ford Focus, Chevrolet Cruze, Hyundai Sonata, Volkswagen Jetta, Kia Optima, Ford Mustang, and Toyota Prius were all far worse than can be purely attributed to the loss of selling days.

The car market is struggling against a tide of SUVs and crossovers, and the exceptions – Civic and Malibu, most obviously – are exceptions largely because they're all-new, freshly introduced versions of established nameplates.

Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for any of these best-selling cars can always be accessed through the dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats page, and for those not viewing the mobile version of this site, near the top right of this page, as well.
