Small And Midsize Luxury SUV Sales In America - June 2016 YTD

2017 Jaguar F-Pace
Rare was the small luxury SUV which didn't sell significantly more often in the United States in June 2016 than in June 2015.

Mercedes-Benz's GLA and the Acura RDX both reported sharp decreases, though both attracted more new customers in the first-half of 2016 than at this point in 2015. Volvo XC60 sales dipped slightly and are down 26% so far this year, not a surprising decline given the hype afforded the XC60's big brother and the XC60's increasing age.

But while this handful of automobiles struggled in the month of June, many other small premium utilities soared to new June heights last month.

For the Audi Q3, June was tied with May as the model's best U.S. sales month ever. It was the best June ever for the BMW X1, Audi Q5, and Mercedes-Benz GLC. BMW X3 sales jumped 70%.

Compared with June 2015, Land Rover Discovery Sport sales more than tripled. U.S. sales of the Porsche Macan, Infiniti QX60, BMW X4, Lincoln MKC, and Lexus NX were all on the upswing as small premium SUVs/crossovers produced 6.4% of all U.S. SUV/crossover sales, up from 5.5% a year ago.

Curious about the categorization of the Jaguar F-Pace and Buick Envision? The F-Pace is larger than, for example, the Audi Q5, but it's a lot smaller than the Audi Q7 and priced in line with the Q5, to boot. As for the Buick, though we may feel strongly that Buick (and the Envision itself) lacks the premium stature necessary to fight at this level, Buick has priced the Envision – at least initially – at a price point higher than the F-Pace. We'll adjust as necessary.

You can click any model name in the tables below to find historical monthly and yearly U.S. auto sales data. You can also select a make and model at GCBC's Sales Stats page. These tables are now sortable, so you can rank luxury SUVs and crossovers any which way you like. Suggestions on how GCBC should break down segments can be passed on through the Contact page.

GCBC isn't here to break down segments, an impossible task for any group, but to display sales data for the sake of comparison. The more ways sales data can be displayed, the better. This explains you'll see the XC70 listed with luxury cars as well as with SUVs and crossovers and the Touareg with luxury SUVs and mainstream SUVs... because readers have wanted it both ways. You can always find the sales results for EVERY vehicle and form your own competitive sets by using the All Vehicle Rankings posts.

Small And Midsize Luxury SUV Sales In America - May 2016 YTD

2017 Jaguar F-Pace S grey
Some sectors aren't susceptible to downturns.

Indeed, the U.S. auto industry didn't really suffer a downturn in May 2016, though "May" volume was down 6%. The auto sales calendar is a quirky one, and May 2016 didn't begin until May 3, 2016, shortening the calendar by two days compared with May 2015. Thus, the daily selling rate in May 2016 was actually up nearly 2%.

When it comes to premium brand SUVs and crossovers, however, sales continued to skyrocket. The smallest German trio jumped 29% thanks largely to huge gains from the segment-leading BMW X1. Up a notch in size and price, the Audi Q5-led small luxury SUV/crossover segment jumped 16%, helped along by the arrival of a new British utility vehicle, the Jaguar F-Pace, Jaguar's first utility vehicle.

The F-Pace is slightly larger than many of the vehicles in this segment, but it's very affordably priced and still smaller than vehicles such as the Lexus RX and BMW X5. We've also included the new Buick Envision in this category, not because the Buick brand has the cachet of BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi, but because Buick wants to charge big league prices for its first from-China model.

Further up the ladder, double-digit percentage improvements were commonplace in May 2016: Volvo XC90, Lincoln MKX, Lexus RX, Land Rover LR4, Infiniti QX60 and QX70, BMW X6, Audi Q7.

Meanwhile, U.S. sales of the Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80, Mercedes-Benz G-Class, Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class, and Toyota Land Cruiser all increased, as well.
