Top 30 Best-Selling Vehicles In America - October 2015

The Ford F-Series, though outsold once again by its chief GM rivals combined, continued as America's best-selling vehicle in October 2015, outselling the number-two Chevrolet Silverado by 13,853 units, a 27% difference.

The F-Series was one of five Fords in the top 20 in October 2015. Escape sales dipped slightly, but the Fusion, Explorer, and Focus all joined the F-Series in posting year-over-year improvements.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles placed four vehicles in the top 23. There are five GM products in the top 23, including three Chevrolets in the top 14. Four Toyotas, four Nissans, three Hondas, two Subarus, two Hyundais, and one Kia round out the top 30.

Compared with October 2014, the Nissan Versa and Kia Optima are the only vehicles present on this October's last that didn't crack the top 30 one year ago. They replace the Toyota Highlander and BMW 3-Series/4-Series, which are now separated.

Throwing all those vehicles into one group results in this list of the 30 best-selling vehicles overall. We end up with five pickup trucks, not a single minivan, 15 cars, and 10 utility vehicles.

Top 30 Best-Selling Vehicles In Canada - October 2015

Canada's 30 best-selling vehicles generated 57% of the Canadian auto industry's October 2015 sales volume, with the top-selling vehicle, Ford's F-Series, bringing in six out of every ten new owners on its own.

The eight top sellers in October all posted year-over-year sales increases in October, with the most significant being the GMC Sierra's 15%, 671-unit improvement. Fewer than one-third of the vehicles ranked among the top 30 posted year-over-year declines. Five of the eight were traditional passenger cars.

One of Canada's 30 best-selling vehicles wasn't even on sale a year ago, nor at the beginning of this year for that matter. The Honda HR-V outsold the surging Toyota Tacoma, the all-new Hyundai Tucson, and high-volume nameplates like the Volkswagen Golf, Toyota Camry, and Jeep Wrangler.

Compared with October of last year, the HR-V joins the Camry, Wrangler, Tacoma, Tucson, and Ford Explorer as replacements for vehicles knocked out of the top 30: Grand Cherokee, Sentra, Sorento, Fit, Edge, and 200.

Top 20 Worst-Selling Vehicles In America - October 2015

The Fiat 500L wasn't really a car anybody has asked for. 

Check that: some of the people who liked the Fiat 500 wanted a bigger version of that car, a stylish, obviously Italian, fun-to-drive Kia Soul fighter. But what they got was an ugly, obvious afterthought that isn't fun to drive. 

As a result, very few people purchased the Fiat 500L. Fiat never once sold more than 1500 copies of the 500L in a single month in America. 

Then the Fiat 500X arrived. Granted, the 500X still misses the target just a little bit. It's more obviously a crossover alternative to the Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-3, and Chevrolet Trax – and its Jeep Renegade sibling – but the 500X may appear to be too delicate, too soft, too style-centric. Only 5634 copies of the 500X have been sold in its short tenure, but now that it's become more readily available, 2178 copies of the 500X found homes in October.

Consequently, the 500L, never desirable to begin with, plunged 68% to only 293 units and ranked among the worst-selling vehicles in America in October 2015, alongside discontinued models like the Toyota FJ Cruiser, Mazda 2, Acura TL, and Scion xD; supercars like the Nissan GT-R and Audi R8; soon-to-be-replaced vehicles like the BMW X1 and 7-Series; and the Honda Fit.
