Small And Midsize Luxury Car Sales In Canada - October 2015 YTD

2014 Volvo S60
Canadians continue to veer away from core luxury cars as Canadian sales of luxury SUVs and crossovers skyrocket.

October 2015 sales of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and its CLS-Class slid 16%. The Hyundai Genesis reported a 58% October sales decrease. The Jaguar XF, awaiting replacement – and the F-Pace SUV sibling – slid 34% in October. The Lexus ES and Lincoln MKS? Down 25% and 15%, respectively.

The BMW 3-Series made further headway in catching up to the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, currently Canada's best-selling premium brand car. 3-Series sales slid 8%, year-over-year, but with 873 sales, the 3-Series finished October 64 sales ahead of the Benz.

That likely won't be enough for the 3-Series to maintain its typical position as Canada's favourite luxury car. The C-Class is 686 sales ahead of the 3-Series with two months remaining on the calendar.

A number of the chief rivals of the 3-Series and C-Class posted notable Canadian sales decreases in October 2015. The Acura TLX tumbled 47%; the Volvo S60 was among Canada's worst-selling vehicles thanks to a 69% tumble.

GCBC isn't here to break down segments, an impossible task for any group, but to display sales data for the sake of comparison. The more ways sales data can be displayed, the better. This explains why you'll see the XC70 listed with luxury SUVs and the Acura ILX with mainstream cars... because readers have wanted it both ways. You can always find the sales results for EVERY vehicle and form your own competitive sets by using the All Vehicle Rankings posts.
^ Mercedes-Benz's Canadian sales figures combine the E-Class with the CLS-Class. Audi Canada's A4 sales figures include sales of the Allroad.
‡ The XTS, K900, and Equus aren't listed here because they're not massive - they are - but because their price points position them much more closely to, for example, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class than the S-Class. Genesis sales figures here do not include sales of the Genesis Coupe (as Hyundai's U.S. Genesis sales figures do), making the comparison with premium brand vehicles much more valid.

The Cadillac Escalade family and Land Rover Range Rover more than doubled their October volume last month, volume gains of 109 and 62 units.

This means Cadillac added more Escalade sales in October 2015 than there were total Lincoln Navigator sales in October 2015.

Land Rover added more  Range Rover sales in October 2015 than the Lexus LX570 managed in total in October 2014, when LX sales rose above 40 units for just the second time in 31 months.

2015 Lexus NX200t silver
37% of the vehicles sold by Toyota Canada's premium Lexus brand in October were NX crossovers. The NX debuted last Christmas to positive reviews but quizzical looks – it is a strangely styled beast.

But with the RX transitioning into fourth-gen form, the NX is hitting its stride, finishing only 12 sales back of the Audi Q5 in October 2015, enough to rank second among premium brand SUVs and crossovers last month.

The NX, Q5 and their 13 small premium utility cohorts generated 8.5% of all SUV/crossover sales in Canada in October, up from 7.9% in October 2014 and 6.3% in October 2013.

Their larger, three-row siblings aren't faring poorly. Canadian sales of the Infiniti QX60, Land Rover LR4 and Range Rover Sport, Lexus GX460, and Volvo XC90 have all increased through the first ten months of 2015. So too have sales of the BMW X6, Cadillac SRX, Mercedes-Benz M-Class/GLE-Class, and Porsche Cayenne.

With two months of sales reporting remaining, the Audi Q5 is the most popular luxury utility vehicle in Canada, 482 sales ahead of the Acura RDX and 1101 sales ahead of the Lexus RX.
