GCBC's The Bad 8 For 2016

In 2016, for a second consecutive year, GCBC's The Bad 8 features only two new nameplates. Six contestants remain from last year, as an insufficient number of new vehicles have been awful enough to replace them. As was the case last year, these are the vehicles that would be least welcomed in GCBC Towers' driveway, definitely rejected for the long-term even if welcomed briefly. 

Let's put it this way: Do you want to get us something for Christmas? Please don't get us any of these vehicles.

They're listed here for a number of reasons, some for just one reason. Whatever the reason, it's bad enough to cause your sales analyst of choice to reject the car so completely that I'd prefer to own anything else on the market; to reject the car so completely that you, too, should strongly consider avoiding it at all costs.

One key premise behind modern car reviewing suggests that, in 2016, there's no such thing as a bad car. That's not completely true, but even if it was, that doesn't mean you can't do better. In the case of these eight cars, you can definitely do better. It's not purely about reliability or durability or outright performance - it's about desirability, and the point at which desirability lines up with perceived value. These eight vehicles have their pluses, but the minuses – however few or however many - far outweigh the positive side of the ledger.

	Acura RLX The RLX is a fine car. But in execution, all its rivals do every little thing a little bit better. Cumulatively, that's a lot of things. A lot of things multiplied by a little bit equals a whole lot better.  Alternative: Cadillac CTS

	Buick Encore The Buick Encore doesn't like to accelerate. The seating position will make some people think Buick is playing a cruel joke. It's expensive, painfully cutesy, and pointless. Alternative: Mazda CX-3
	Fiat 500L It would be one thing for the 500L to be awkward, or painful to drive, or unreliable. But the 500L is all three. Alternative: Kia Soul
	Jeep Renegade Limited Not all Renegades are awful. But when you start luxing up a Renegade, it gets very sketchy. The price reaches into territory no car with NVH this awful deserves to inhabit. At this price point, buy something properly refined and roomy. Alternative: Kia Sorento
	Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Convertible This is just silly. And silly is acceptable. Sometimes. But not when the sand is going to be blown back into the cabin.  Alternative: Porsche Macan S
	Mitsubishi Mirage The Mirage is actually being restyled for model year 2016. It's still ghastly. And styling aside, the car still feels like a third-world city car attempt. There's simply no need. Alternative: Nissan Micra
	Nissan Versa Sedan This problem has been resolved. In part. The Versa sedan is no longer on sale in Canada. Americans, however, must turn away from this stain on automotive design. It's not as though there are other redeeming qualities. Alternative: Honda Fit

Lexus vs. Acura vs. Infiniti: U.S. Sales 2006-2015

The late 80s were a time of great revolution for the Japanese auto industry. Not only did Honda forge an upmarket path with Acura, but compatriot automakers Nissan and Toyota did the same with Infiniti, and Lexus, respectively.

The path has not been a straightforward one for Infiniti. Sales in 2015 will rise for a a third consecutive year and will reach an eight-year high, perhaps even a ten-year high-water mark. But Infiniti is still not able to fully replicate the success of 2004 and 2005, when the newly launched G35 captured hearts and potential BMW 3-Series buyers. 

The market has expanded – interest in luxury cars is rising. Infiniti rests hope on new entry-level machines, the Mercedes-Benz CLA-based Q30 and QX30. That should help produce greater volume, something Infiniti dealers sorely lack.

Acura is another story, though one let down in recent years by lackluster passenger car efforts. The brand which built its image on affordable performance and supremely reliable entry-level luxury sedans doesn't have the reliability reputation now that it did in the 90s, nor does Acura offer any affordable performance car.

Acura will attempt in the next year to restore performance credibility with the second-generation NSX supercar, but that rarely seen machine won't change the fact that young men once wanted an Integra GS-R, and now Acura must wait and hope that those young men, grow up, get married, have kids, and want an MDX. 

Acura sales in 2015 are expected to rise to an eight-year high, as befits any automaker in a record-setting year for auto sales seven years removed from the beginning of a recession. Acura sold 210,000 new vehicles in 2005, the year before our chart began. Sales in 2015 are down approximately 16% since then. 

Acura sold 137,938 cars, 54,121 MDXs, and the first 9164 RDXs in 2006. In 2015, Acura will be lucky to sell 70,000 cars and MDX sales are down 12% year-over-year. The MDX and RDX now account for 61% of brand-wide sales.

By far the most successful Japanese luxury entrant is Toyota's Lexus division. Not only does Lexus dominate this post's accompanying sales chart, Lexus was also the top-selling premium auto brand in America for 11 consecutive years between 2000 and 2010, pipping not only its Japanese foes but Cadillac, Lincoln, and the Germans, too.

In 2015's first 11 months, Lexus' utility vehicles are up 30% to 152,427 sales, equal to slightly more than half the brand's year-to-date sales. The RX is the brand's top seller and America's top-selling premium brand utility vehicle overall, 27,000 sales ahead of the second-ranked Cadillac SRX.

RECALL
Nissan is recalling 18 copies of the 2015 and 2016 Puerto Rico market GT-R because, "The affected vehicles have a Certification Label that is missing the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) and Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) information. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of 49 CFR Part 567, "Certification.”” In other words, the GT-Rs aren’t in any danger of, you know, blowing up.

Auto News For Friday, November 20, 2015 - Subaru XV Crosstrek Is Now The Subaru Crosstrek

Here are the six must-read, must-watch auto news stories, recalls and videos for Friday, November 20, 2015.

SUBARU
Once upon a time, Subaru decided to really shake things up by referring to the flop that was the B9 Tribeca as simply the Tribeca, sans B9. Fast forward to model year 2016, and the success that is the XV Crosstrek is losing its XV preface.

VW
Outside of the costs already incurred by Volkswagen and the damage done to the brand’s reputation, at least one of the recalls the brand will soon begin won’t be nearly as costly as you likely expected. “The technical fixes for the 1.6-liter diesel engines require installing a 10-euro ($10.74) sensor inside the air filter and a software update,” Reuters says.

SUPERCAR LIVING
You’ve often dreamed of one day owning a proper supercar. But would you really want to live with one on a daily basis? CAR Magazine is going to spend six months with a McLaren 650S Spider. “No-one would dream of running a 458 Speciale as an everyday car, but with its greater refinement, flawless ergonomics and versatile Proactive suspension, the 650S promises to be a supercar you can use like a supermini.” 

RECALL
Hyundai is recalling 304,900 copies of the 2011 and 2012 Sonata because, "the brake pedal stopper pad can deteriorate allowing the stop lamp switch plunger to remain extended when the brake pedal is released.”

Toyota is recalling 30,812 copies of the 2013-2015 Avalon and the 2013-2015 Lexus ES350 and Lexus ES300h because, "the Pre-Collision System may unexpectedly activate and apply the brakes when the radar detects a steel joint or plate in the roadway as an object.”

Remember the Acura RDX's turbocharged four-cylinder, its nimble handling, and its stiff ride?

That was the first-generation RDX. The second-gen RDX has been around since model year 2013 with a V6, more subdued dynamics, and far greater popularity. 

The 2016 model is this week's review subject on Alex On Autos.

After its thorough reengineering, the RDX became a runaway hit for Acura, a brand which steadily became less able to sustain demand for their traditional passenger cars. The RDX averaged 44,800 U.S. sales in 2013 and 2014, a 181% improvement compared to the average annual U.S. sales total during the RDX's first full five years on the market. In 2014, the Acura RDX outsold all direct premium brand rivals, from the Audi Q5 and Mercedes-Benz GLK to to BMW X3 and Volvo XC60.

So far this year, the RDX is selling 19% more often than the next-highest-ranked competitor, the Audi Q5, and RDX volume is up 9.5% through the first five months of 2015.

RECALL
Volkswagen is recalling 2957 Tiguans (model year 2015) because the vehicles may be, “missing the required tire pressure information and they may state incorrect weight and loading information.”

American Honda is recalling 19,502 Acura MDX crossovers (model years 2014-2015) and RLX sedans (model year 2014) because, “the collision mitigation braking system incorrectly interpret certain roadside objects such as metal fences or metal guardrails as obstacles and unexpectedly apply the brakes.”

INSIDE THE ELECTRIC AUTO INDUSTRY
Saying that, “The Model X will be a better SUV than the Model S is a sedan,” Tesla founder Elon Musk plans for deliveries of the new model to begin before November. The Model X was originally intended to go on sale some six months ago.

U.S. 2012 Station Sport Wagon Touring Estate Sales Figures

Station wagons are the vehicles in which people who are currently old grew up, the vehicles your parents replaced with a minivan, the vehicles you now say you want but refuse to actually buy.

In the eyes of many automotive writers, the ideal vehicle is an all-wheel-drive, diesel-powered wagon with a manual transmission. And brown paint. And cloth seats. It would be the ultimate Q car, a cargo hauler that's enjoyable to drive down a twisty road but doesn't cause the neighbours to think you're going through a midlife crisis. 

Because you're an automotive writer, you dream of having an 2002tii project car, a spouse who drives a rust-free 1984 Jeep Wagoneer, and a Chris Harris-like salary that will enable you to park a Cuprite Brown Mercedes-Benz E63 Wagon in your driveway. 

Most manufacturers tell us they don't import wagons to North America because of poor sales. (It also has something to do with CAFE.) The thing is, most manufacturers don't share their wagon sales info. So we don't know how bad things really are. That's not abnormal: you don't see Honda breaking down Civic sales by coupe and sedan, Ford doesn't share F-150 and F-250 and F-350 sales data, and Chevrolet doesn't split their monthly release with Camaro and Camaro Convertible sales figures.

Only on rare occasions do automakers share abundantly. Examples include Mini, in the U.S. but not in Canada, which breaks down Cooper sales by Hardtop, Clubman, Convertible, Coupe, and Roadster. Fiat, in Canada but not in the U.S., breaks down 500 sales by hardtop and cabriolet. Infiniti USA considers the G sedan and G Coupe/Convertible two different cars. Cadillac shares Escalade, Escalade ESV, and Escalade EXT data. 

Generally speaking, however, automakers are loathe to share such data. Hyundai USA doesn't even provide the split between Genesis sedans and coupes, for goodness' sake. And the data that is shared? You don't see Cooper vs. Cooper S. vs Cooper S JCW, do you? Nope, nothing of the kind, not from Mini or any other automobile manufacturer.

So we don't know how many Mercedes-Benz E-Class Wagons have been sold this year, and we therefore can't use the (presumably) small figures to help support Audi's theory that there's no point in delivering to us the A6 Avant. BMW doesn't share 3-Series Touring numbers. Cadillac throws the not-long-for-this-world CTS wagon in with the sedan and coupe.

Come to think of it, there isn't that much wagon sales data missing, because there are so few wagons on sale, because we don't actually buy brown, manual-trans wagons with diesel engines; we only say we will. Wagons have either been turned into quasi-SUVs - like the Audi A4 Allroad, Subaru Outback and Volvo XC70 - or erased from the North American market, like the Mazda 6, BMW 5-Series, and Volvo V50. Or they've never even been offered here, like the Chevrolet Cruze, Buick Regal/Opel Insignia, and Ford Focus. 

All 265 Vehicles Ranked By U.S. November 2012 YTD Sales

What are we left with? Fortunately, Volkswagen USA and American Honda provide information for the Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen, which is actually a Golf Wagon, and the Acura TSX Sport Wagon. 

Total Volkswagen Jetta sales through November 2012: 154,763, down 5% from last year. The Jetta is America's 21st-best-selling nameplate so far this year, but would fall behind the 25th-ranked Jeep Grand Cherokee without the wagon.

Total Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen sales through November 2012: 21,387, down 13.9% from last year, a 3458-unit drop. There's talk of limited SportWagen supply, but one assumes that Volkswagen would manufactur more if the company genuinely felt a substantially larger number could be sold. 

The Jetta SportWagen accounts for 13.8% of all U.S. Jetta sales. Interestingly, the SportWagen outsells non-GTI Golfs by a healthy margin and outsells the Golf GTI and Golf R combined. Volkswagen's Tiguan, sales of which have risen 20.5% this year, has found 7034 more buyers than the Jetta SportWagen.

On to Acura then. The TSX Sport Wagon accounts for 14.3% of all TSX sales through November 2012. TSX Sport Wagon sales are up tp 3820 this year, a 31% gain, or 905 extra units. TSX sedan sales are down 6.4% to 22,903. The TSX is America's 111th-best-selling nameplate. Without the Sport Wagon, the TSX would drop just behind the 122nd-ranked Mercedes-Benz GL-Class.

Meanwhile, Audi has sold 2680 A4 Allroads since May and managed to sell 92% more Allroads in November 2012 than Audi sold A4 Avants in November 2011. The Volvo XC70 ranks 209th in U.S. new vehicle volume with 4995 sales, down 2.4% this year. The Subaru Outback is very popular, relatively speaking. Sales are up 15.9% to 105,481 in 2012, making the Outback America's 37th-best-selling vehicle. 2012 has proven to be the Outback's best post-Legacy separation sales year yet.

Think on these things.

2012's The Bad 8 - Acura RL

ACURA RL

The what? Friends of GoodCarBadCar who've asked for a preview of The Bad 8 don't even know what the RL is. A picture doesn't help because, after all, a picture shows absolutely nothing more than a fundamental sketch of a conventional sedan, a sedan few people have ever noticed in the wild. Acura makes a car above the TL? Yep, but the RL's utter lack of success is the reason you were unfamiliar with the subject.

Forgettable, anonymous, dull, and characterless, the RL takes what's bad about every other boring car on the market and rolls it all into one package. Sadly, Acura thinks the RL is an amazing car. The Canadian website says, "It’s flagship automotive technology without compromise or equal." They call this, yes, this car, Acura's freaking ridiculously boring RL, the "apex of the luxury sedan." Acura's U.S. website suggests the RL, "commands attention." Acura's right: this car is without equal, but only on a scale which weighs vapidity. If this is the apex of anything, fans of driving just decided they'll do their best not to hit it. And if the RL commands attention, what words are left to describe the visual impact of Lamborghini's Aventador?

The Acura RL is also damaged for reasons which are, admittedly, a bit personal. In an interview, the owner of a nearby Acura dealership once said the RL is a supercar. Not a super car, like a tremendous car, but a supercar. One word, in the way Ferrari's 599 is a supercar or the aforementioned Aventador is a supercar. He wasn't referring to the RL's Super Handling all-wheel drive, oh no. He had driven the RL on track and felt that, because it had a fancy drivetrain and more horsepower than the iconic NSX, it could be labelled a supercar. A statement so insulting, so downright libelous, has only hurt the RL, causing it to be firmly entrenched on GoodCarBadCar's bad side.

Alternatives: The Audi A6 is a significantly cheaper and significantly better car. The Hyundai Genesis 5.0 R-Spec generates 429 horsepower - check that... yes, 429 horsepower - and costs a bit less than the Acura RL, as well. And would paying a few thousand extra for the diesel in a Mercedes-Benz E350 BlueTec be so bad?

Base USD/CAD Price: $47,700 / $64,690

It Sucks, But... it wouldn't be the end of the world to be stuck with a 300-horsepower V6 and Acura's high-tech all-wheel drive system. It would be the end of the world to pay $48,000 just to be stuck with a V6 wearing this suit, but if somebody was giving out RLs as gifts, you can accept one. With begrudging gratitude.

Top 10 Worst-Selling Cars In Canada - November 2011

Acura Canada failed to sell a single RL in November 2011. This is unusual but not unheard-of. The same thing happened in September and June of last year. Since March, when Acura Canada sold only 11 RLs, sales have gotten closer and closer to zilch. Acura sold only two RLs in October, for example.

With not a single recorded RL sale last month, the $64,690 Acura was the worst-selling car in Canada in November 2011, by two measures. Sales plunged 100% from 11 in November 2010 to zero last month. 

The Mercedes-Benz B-Class is suffering from model changeover syndrome. Waiting for the new B-Class while supply of the old B-Class dwindles can't be easy for Canadian Benz dealers. B-Class sales fell 95% in November. Honda Fit's November decline was equally precipitous. This equates to a 1474-unit drop in Fit sales. The Honda hatchback was Canada's eighth-best-selling car last November. Honda Fit sales have fallen every month since August and haven't topped 433 once this year, a figure Honda topped 75% of the time last year.

Non-premium vehicles like the Fit aren't supposed to be as exclusive as their upscale premium brethren. When judged by volume, the Fit escaped worst seller status in November. The Honda Insight, on the other hand, a car Honda Canada mostly ignores, was the worst-selling non-premium vehicle in Canada last month. 

It's too early for Mitsubishi's new-to-market i MiEV electric car to have taken off, but there's evidence which suggests it won't do so soon. Three months in to the Chevrolet Volt's Canadian campaign, GM only found 28 Volt buyers. Nissan sold the LEAF to only 42 buyers in Canada in November. The Volt and LEAF are vehicles we would call more mainstream than the i MiEV.

November 2010 was so good for the BMW 3-Series that, one year later, the 3-Series' 27% decline in Canadian sales volume wasn't significant enough for the 3-Series to fall from its top spot among premium vehicles. 

Sales of the BMW's closest rival, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, jumped 58% in November 2011. The C-Class finished last month 35 sales behind the 3-Series after beating the small BMW by 176 units in October. C-Class Benz sales are up 17% this year. 

Mercedes-Benz's best-selling SUV in November was the $57,900 M-Class, not the $41,600 GLK350 which leads Mercedes-Benz SUV standings through the first eleven months of 2011. The M-Class was the best-selling premium SUV in Canada in November 2011.

Because of a tie between the Infiniti EX and Audi Q7, there are actually 31 luxury vehicles listed in the Top 30 table below. 15 of the vehicles listed wear German badges, including the $48,875-$63,685 Volkswagen Touareg. There's also one Swede, two British SUVs - among them the Range Rover Evoque - and ten Japanese vehicles. This leaves the Lincoln MKX, Cadillac SRX, and Cadillac CTS to represent Detroit.
