Watch Alex On Autos Video Reviews: 2016 Mazda CX-9, 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS, 2016 Kia Soul EV, 2017 Hyundai Elantra

Over the past few days our favourite video car reviewer and fellow TTAC contributor, Alex Dykes, published a raft of new vehicle video reviews, including a look at the (eagerly?) anticipated, second-generation, 2016 Mazda CX-9.

Mazda allowed the first CX-9 to linger for far too long. Since 2007, when it was first launched, only 223,000 CX-9s have been sold in America. Ford will sell at least that many Explorers in 2016 alone. But Mazda's new CX-9 is more stylish, more efficient, and far more modern.

Still, don't expect the CX-9 to top the sales leaderboard. Globally, Mazda only has capacity for 50,000 CX-9s per year, of which 80% will come to North America.

Auto News For Tuesday, November 17, 2015 - Ford Refreshes Escape For 2017

Here are the seven must-read, must-watch auto news stories, recalls and videos for Tuesday, November 17, 2015.

FORD
Ahead of the Los Angeles Auto Show, Ford introduced a facelifted 2017 Escape with a new front fascia, new technology, and new engines. The Escape’s new 2.0L turbo is said to be more powerful and efficient, a 1.5L turbo – like the 2.0L – features stop-start tech, and Ford also debuted SYNC Connect, which will enable owners to start the vehicle, unlock the vehicle, and check other things on the vehicle from a remote location. The Escape is Canada’s top-selling SUV; America’s second-best-selling SUV.

VW
The 2017 Volkswagen Beetle Dune won’t save Volkswagen from its diesel emissions troubles, nor will it be a mainstream car. But to Beetle enthusiasts, it’s likely everything they wanted the Beetle to already be.

KIA
Toyota struck gold with the Prius. But with the auto industry increasingly earnings its keep with SUVs and crossovers, Kia is going to try to replicate the Prius’s success with a dedicated hybrid crossover, the Niro. 

AUTOFOCUS
Across much of the world, Volvo has not been struggling. But in North America, the brand’s sales fell so low some wondered whether its Chinese ownership would want to continue funding the North American operations. The XC90 is here now, however, and it’s selling very well, and Volvo thus appears to be on its way back.

Scion is about to introduce a new crossover based on the Toyota C-HR Concept. Scion is already displaying signs of life because of the iM and iA. The C-HR could be just what the brand needs to regain the strength Scion displayed a decade ago. 

RECALL
BMW is recalling 7162 copies of the 2016 5-Series – 528i, 535i, 550i, 535d, and M5 – because of, "an inboard lower anchor for child restraints on the left rear seat that may have been bent downwards, preventing the child seat from fully engaging both lower anchors.” 

WATCH

Volkswagen is encouraging its workers to feel perfectly comfortable blowing the proverbial whistle. For another couple weeks, that is.

INSIDE THE AUTO INDUSTRY
Buick has historically been an enormously popular auto brand in China. Buick used to be an enormously popular auto brand in America. The two shall finally meet if, when, Buick begins selling the Envision in the United States early next year. And yes, the Envision is built in China.

RECALL
Kia is recalling 256,459 copies of the 2014-2016 Soul and Soul EV because, "the adhesive used to secure the steering pinion gear to the steering gear assembly may have insufficient strength, and as a result, the pinion gear may separate from the steering gear assembly."

Porsche is recalling 21,835 Macans (model years 2015 and 2016) because they, "have a low pressure fuel line in the engine compartment that may leak."

WINTER
As in a recent Car & Driver winter tire test completed in Finland, Kal Tire's winter tire test produced a Finnish winner, as well: the Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2. On average, the winter tires in the test enabled a car to stop nearly 15 metres sooner than non-winter tires.

REVIEW
The GLK-succeeding Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class small SUV is beginning to trickle into the autoport near GCBC Towers on the east coast of Canada. It is definitely a looker. But in a class full of attractive utility vehicles – Q5, X3, XC60, Evoque, Discovery Sport – the GLC needs to be more than just attractive. So is it any good?

FUTURE
The Mercedes-Benz GLK was nothing if not distinctive. Its replacement, the GLC, looks more like a downsized ML (soon to be called the GLE) or perhaps an upsized GLA. Forget the V6, the GLC will be fitted with a 2.0L turbo four, but with more power than the 2.0L turbo in the GLA. U.S. sales of the GLK increased in 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014.

INSIDE THE AUTO DESIGN BUSINESS
Luc Donckerwolke made his name on the Lamborghini Murcielago. Now he’ll be designing Hyundais and Kias, and eventually he’ll take over from Peter Schreyer, the man who’s attracted so much attention for Kia design that they use him in commercials.

Honda is discontinuing the Accord Plug-In Hybrid. You won’t notice, of course, since you never actually laid eyes on an Accord Plug-In Hybrid in the wild.

Auto News For Monday, June 15, 2015 - The Volkswagen Group Dissection

Here are the five must-read, must-watch auto news stories, reviews, and videos for Monday, June 15, 2015.

INSIDE THE AUTO INDUSTRY
We won’t know the full impact of how this will alter – or not alter – the way the Volkswagen Group develops its cars. But rather than one large group, VW is about to be separated into four holding companies. According to Reuters, one of these will include Porsche, Bugatti, and Bentley. Another includes Audi, Lamborghini, and the Ducato motorcycle brand. VW’s own Volkswagen brand joins Skoda and Seat. The remaining holding company will include the MAN, Scania, and VW Commercial vehicles, Reuters says.

Is Kia about to catch its Hyundai corporate partner in the U.S. sales race? May was perhaps nothing more than an anomaly, but Kia averaged only 46 fewer sales per day last month than Hyundai.

REVIEW
We linked to one Mercedes-Benz Metris review last week. But because this is a whole new kind of vehicle for Mercedes-Benz in North America, it’s important that we have a well-rounded viewpoint. 2013's The Good 12 - Kia Rio 5-Door - Sub $15K

$15,000 doesn't buy you what it used to. No longer can an Acura Integra be acquired for $12,580, as it could 20 years ago. These days, sub-$15K cars are subcompacts and subcompacts only. 

If a new car is a must-have, if you refuse to take a bit of risk on a '97 BMW 740i for $5000, you owe it to yourself to purchase the subcompact that looks better than all the others. The one with a terrific warranty, class-leading horsepower, and available Chestnut paint. 

Most importantly, it's best to consider the subcompact which features an interior capable of impressing jaded buyers who usually spend $25,000, not $15,000. The quality of materials is better than expected. The layout is mature. If you want to spend more than $13,800 - and you will want to - upper trim levels are reasonably priced and very well equipped.

Overlooking the fact that many consumers still struggle with the thought of owning a Korean-badged car, the sophisticated image presented by a debadged Rio riding on 17-inch alloys is undeniable. It's a high-class looker.

For a buyer with few dollars to spend and a need for a decent amount of space, the Rio is unbeatable. Fortunately, buyers can rarely go wrong in the subcompact segment these days. No, inflation and cancellation mean you won't be buying a new $12,580 Integra in 2013. But the Chevrolet Sonic, Ford Fiesta, Hyundai Accent, Honda Fit, and this Rio (especially) are all worth test driving.

City Fuel Economy: 28-29 miles per gallon

It's Not Perfect: The Rio's front seats leave something to be desired. Its rear bench is also too flat. And it would be nice if Kia figured out how to make the Rio corner like the similarly-swift Sonic.

Sales Stats: The Rio ranks second in its class in Canada, quite a distance behind its sibling, the Hyundai Accent, and is frequently one of Canada's 30 best-selling vehicles. South of the border, where subcompacts don't make as much of an impact, the Rio is one of the 90 best-selling vehicles in the United States. Rio sales more than doubled in 2012.

Viable Alternatives: The subcompact class is filled with worthy cars. I can have fun driving a Ford Fiesta, Mazda 2, or Honda Fit. The Rio's Hyundai partner, the Accent, is very much a Rio in many ways. Chevrolet's Sonic is handsome and quick on its feet. And thinking even smaller, the new higher-powered Fiat 500 Turbo is Good 12-winning Italian sweetness.

November 2012 Top 20 Best-Selling Cars In Canada

The Updated Interior Of Honda's 2013 Civic

Canada's new vehicle market posted a 4% improvement in November 2012, gains which could have been much greater were it not for the losses posted by some of Canada's best-selling models. Dodge's Grand Caravan fell 3.2%, or 112 units. Dodge's Ram P/U, Canada's second-best-selling vehicle, fell 2.4%, or 129 units.

And Canada's best-selling car from November 2011, still Canada's best-selling car, fell by 1756 units year-over-year. Last year at this time, Civic sales had risen 62% compared with November 2012. In other words, Honda Canada could afford a 26% drop in Civic sales. Even as Hyundai Elantra sales rose 39.5% compared with November 2011, the compact Hyundai ended the month 954 sales behind the Honda. 

For the Hyundai to have overtaken the Civic, Elantra sales would have had to jump 72%. That didn't happen. And despite its 26% drop, the Honda Civic easily ended November 2012 as Canada's best-selling car while expanding its year-to-date lead to 10,528 units. Oh, and an updated 2012 model goes on sale soon.

All 261 Vehicles Ranked By November 2012 YTD Canadian Sales

The Kia Rondo and Chevrolet Orlando landed on Canada's list of the 20 best-selling cars for the second consecutive month. Typically, minivans are only eligible for Canada's best-selling vehicles list. But the Orlando and Rondo aren't so easily classified. If you don't want to consider the two Mazda 5 alternatives as passenger cars, the next-best-selling cars in November were the Subaru Impreza, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and Dodge Dart. 

Much more could be said about November 2012 new vehicle sales volume in Canada, and much will be said. GoodCarBadCar will soon post a best-selling SUV list and added to that will be a best-selling truck list, and shortly, yet more for best-selling vehicles, best-selling luxury vehicles, worst-selling vehicles, and full vehicle rankings.

November 2012 Top 20 Best-Selling SUVs In America

America's 20 top-selling SUVs and crossovers accounted for 219,682 of America's 1.14 million new vehicle sales in November 2012. The Ford Escape trailed the leading Honda CR-V by 1363 units, but was the highest-selling of four American brand SUVs in the top five. Year-to-date, the CR-V's 15,042-unit lead over the Escape is not something that can be overcome in December, particularly if CR-V sales continue to rise and Escape sales continue to fall.

The chief newcomer on November 2012's list of the 20 best-selling SUVs and crossovers in America is the Nissan Pathfinder. With 23% of its year-to-date sales coming in the eleventh month of the year, the Pathfinder nameplate owes much to the fourth-gen model that was recently introduced with more of a crossover angle. 

The best Pathfinder sales year in the last decade was 2005, when 76,156 were sold. It seems unlikely that Nissan could sell 8000 Pathfinders each month now, but if it did, that 96,000 annual rate would have a hugely negative impact on the Murano, or at least one would think. Ford is doing a fine job of selling a big crossover-that-used-to-be-a-truck, the Explorer, alongside the smaller Edge and the better-selling Escape. Perhaps Nissan can do the same with the Pathfinder, smaller Murano, and better-selling Rogue.

All 265 Vehicles Ranked By U.S. November 2012 YTD Sales
12 different auto brands are represented in this month's top 20 list, although they hail from just eight different auto manufacturing entities. The Lexus RX was the only premium brand vehicle to crack the top 20, although you will soon be seeing in this month's luxury SUV sales post that Cadillac SRX sales shot up 13% to 5340 and BMW had a great month with the X5 and X3.

November 2012 Top 20 Best-Selling Cars In America

The Focus Is Now America's
Best-Selling American Brand Car

America's 20 best-selling passenger cars accounted for 326,816 of America's 1.14 million new vehicle sales in November 2012. Knocking the Toyota Camry off its normal top spot was the Honda Civic, sales of which shot up 76% in November. Presumably the result of a clear out of 2012s, the Civic's 30K month was only part of American Honda's November surge.

The Accord is also in the midst of a model changeover, and as customers clamour for the new model, others enjoy the deals they found on the outgoing midsize Honda. Accord sales jumped 83% in November 2012. Although there are some mighty big year-over-year improvements in this top 20 list, none beat the Accord's, and only its better-selling little brother comes close. 

2012 was the first year since 2008 that Honda's sold more than 300,000 Accords, and the year isn't over yet. With a half-decent December, 2012 will also be the first time since '08 that Honda's sold more than 300,000 Civics to American customers. Toyota looks likely to sell 400,000 Camrys for the first time since 2008, as well.

That's the podium discussed. Move past the top three and you'll find two more Toyotas, including the four-pronged Prius lineup, which was ranked ninth in November. The best-selling American brand car was the sixth-ranked Ford Focus. The Focus is now 1338 sales ahead of its big brother, the Fusion, in the race to end 2012 as the best-selling Detroit-badged car. There are three Hyundai/Kia products in the top 20, three Germans, one Subaru, and one Mazda.
