Large Luxury SUV Sales In Canada - May 2016 YTD

Despite an industry-wide slowdown caused in part by May 2016's abbreviated Canadian auto sales calendar – which didn't begin until May 3, strangely – full-size luxury SUVs posted a 7% increase.

Thanks to gains from the Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80, Lexus LX570, Lincoln Navigator, and Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class, sales of flagship luxury SUVs were on the rise as new vehicle sales declined. Indeed, this group of luxury SUVs grew faster than the overall SUV/crossover sector, which jumped 5.3% in May 2016.

Mercedes-Benz's re-launch of the GL-Class as the new Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class appears to be a successful one. 231 GLSs were sold in May, a 25% year-over-year increase. 

Combined, the QX80, LX570, and Range Rover didn't sell as often as the GLS and only managed to tie Cadillac's improving Escalade.

Canada's favourite flagship luxury SUVs suffered modest but measurable downturns in April 2016, but the segment continues to roar ahead of 2015's pace thanks to gains produced across the board.

Through the first-third of 2016, Canadian sales of the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class are up 5%, and as availability of the updated, renamed GLS-Class improves, sales should rise more quickly. Cadillac Escalade volume is up 6%, a gain of 44 sales through the first four months of 2016. 

Infiniti and Land Rover have both added to their QX80 and Range Rover tallies – QX80 volume is up 80% so far this year, and the big Infiniti shot past the 100-unit mark for the second consecutive month, and just the second time ever.

Lower-volume contenders from Lexus and Lincoln are also on the rise, particularly in the Land Cruiser-based LX570's case. The Navigator now trails every member of the pack, though 2016 is on track to be the big Expedition-based Lincoln's third consecutive year of growth.

Large Luxury SUV Sales In Canada - November 2015 YTD

Toyota Canada's 151% increase in Lexus LX570 sales drove November 2015 volume to 93 units, the best November ever for Lexus's flagship SUV.

During the same month, Canadian sales of the Cadillac Escalade and its long-wheelbase Cadillac Escalade ESV jumped 157%, a year-over-year increase of 124 units; an increase worth more volume than the Lexus LX570's best ever November sales total.

Infiniti QX80 sales jumped 40%. The Land Rover Range Rover posted a 69% increase. Lincoln Navigator volume improved by three units. 

And the segment-leading Mercedes-Benz GL-Class more than doubled its November volume to 297 units, the highest total for the GL since April of last year.

The GL, soon to be renamed GLS, offers a broader product portfolio than the Escalade, and also benefits from a lower base price. 

Pricing for the GL starts around $80K, depending on your choice of a gas or diesel V6. The least costly V8 GL-Class starts at $102,300 before fees. The Cadillac Escalade GCBC is reviewing this week is optioned up, with fees, to $106,190.

The Cadillac Escalade family and Land Rover Range Rover more than doubled their October volume last month, volume gains of 109 and 62 units. 

This means Cadillac added more Escalade sales in October 2015 than there were total Lincoln Navigator sales in October 2015. 

Land Rover added more  Range Rover sales in October 2015 than the Lexus LX570 managed in total in October 2014, when LX sales rose above 40 units for just the second time in 31 months.

Nor was October by any means a bad month for the Infiniti QX80 – sales jumped 12% – and Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, sales of which rose 6% to 241 units, the GL's second-highest total in the last 18 months.

That year-over-year increase of 169 units translated to total sufficient for the Escalade lineup to handily outsell the declining Mercedes-Benz GL-Class and the Land Rover Range Rover.

Canadian Lincoln Navigator sales blossomed, as well, but for the much lower-volume luxo-Ford Expedition, the 320% year-over-year improvement translated to only 42 sales last month.

As a result, Cadillac sold more Escalades in May than Lincoln's sold Navigators all year.

That places the Lincoln Navigator's 132% gain in context, as more than doubling Navigator sales produced only an extra 29 sales for a total of 59. The Navigator was outsold by the Infiniti QX80 for the fourth consecutive month.

Besides the Escalade, QX80, and Navigator Canadian sales of other luxury flagships increased, as well. Range Rover sales more than doubled to 107 units. Lexus added nine LX570 sales. Mercedes-Benz's G-Class shot up 60%, a gain of 15 units, with their classic G-Class. The GL, Mercedes-Benz's volume large luxury SUV, slid 21% but was still a dominant player in the category.
