Large Luxury SUV Sales In America - June 2016 YTD

U.S. sales of most flagship luxury SUVs exploded in June 2016, clawing back demand for a third consecutive month after a slower start to the year.

First-quarter volume in this category was down 5% as sales of the Infiniti QX80, Land Rover Range Rover, and especially the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class declined. Three months later, U.S. sales in the category are up 4%.

Though Range Rover sales are still lower this year than last, the launch of the GL's GLS successor have basically levelled off, surging with a year-over-year increase of 565 units in June 2016 alone.

The Cadillac Escalade/Escalade ESV tandem continues to produce big gains, as well. 2960 total Escalades were sold in June, the fourth consecutive month Escalade volume shot past 2900 units.

Large Luxury SUV Sales In Canada - May 2016 YTD

Despite an industry-wide slowdown caused in part by May 2016's abbreviated Canadian auto sales calendar – which didn't begin until May 3, strangely – full-size luxury SUVs posted a 7% increase.

Thanks to gains from the Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80, Lexus LX570, Lincoln Navigator, and Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class, sales of flagship luxury SUVs were on the rise as new vehicle sales declined. Indeed, this group of luxury SUVs grew faster than the overall SUV/crossover sector, which jumped 5.3% in May 2016.

Mercedes-Benz's re-launch of the GL-Class as the new Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class appears to be a successful one. 231 GLSs were sold in May, a 25% year-over-year increase. 

Combined, the QX80, LX570, and Range Rover didn't sell as often as the GLS and only managed to tie Cadillac's improving Escalade.

Large Luxury SUV Sales In America - May 2016 YTD

Was May 2016 a rough month for the U.S. auto industry?

Not exactly. The 6% drop in volume compared with May 2015 was down to an abbreviated auto sales calendar: there were 24 selling days in May 2016, down from 26 in May 2015. Thus, on a typical day in May, automobile dealers were selling more vehicles this May than last.

Especially when it comes to full-size, full-bore, flagship luxury SUVs. Re-launched with updates and a new name, Mercedes-Benz's GL-Class-succeeding GLS-Class jumped 45% to 3358 units, an addition of 1036 sales.

Total Cadillac Escalade volume jumped 11%. The Infiniti QX80, Mercedes-Benz G-Class, and Toyota Land Cruiser all posted big gains, too.

Meanwhile, the Lexus LX570's 2% drop translated to a 6% increase in the daily selling rate. Only the Land Rover Range Rover and Lincoln Navigator stood out as real exceptions because of their sharp decreases.

Canada's favourite flagship luxury SUVs suffered modest but measurable downturns in April 2016, but the segment continues to roar ahead of 2015's pace thanks to gains produced across the board.

Through the first-third of 2016, Canadian sales of the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class are up 5%, and as availability of the updated, renamed GLS-Class improves, sales should rise more quickly. Cadillac Escalade volume is up 6%, a gain of 44 sales through the first four months of 2016. 

Infiniti and Land Rover have both added to their QX80 and Range Rover tallies – QX80 volume is up 80% so far this year, and the big Infiniti shot past the 100-unit mark for the second consecutive month, and just the second time ever.

Lower-volume contenders from Lexus and Lincoln are also on the rise, particularly in the Land Cruiser-based LX570's case. The Navigator now trails every member of the pack, though 2016 is on track to be the big Expedition-based Lincoln's third consecutive year of growth.

Large Luxury SUV Sales In America - April 2016 YTD

One month ago, we wrote about the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class's U.S. sales slowdown in advance of the big SUV's transition into GLS-Class form. 

Now, the transition is underway, and GL volume – now known as GLS volume – shot up 36% to 2991 units in April 2016, a 249% increase compared with the GL's March doldrums.

Cadillac's Escalade, riding on two wheelbases as the Escalade and long-wheelbase Escalade ESV, pipped the big Benz by 16 reported units in April. Momentum, however, is not on the Cadillac's side.

Producing significantly less volume, momentum is on the side of the Toyota twins: Land Cruiser and Lexus LX570. Both will remain rare not only by the standards of the U.S. auto industry's popular nameplates but also compared with the norms in this category. 

But both the Toyota and Lexus are significantly more common in 2016 than they were in 2014. 

Combined sales of the duo are up by 1082 units through the first one-third of 2016.
