Midsize Car Sales In Canada - June 2016 YTD

2017 Ford Fusion V6 Sport
Out of sync with recent results, Canadian sales of midsize cars jumped 11% in June 2016 thanks to a huge Ford Fusion increase plus significant year-over-year improvements from the Chrysler 200 and Nissan Altima.

The Fusion became June's top-selling midsize car. The Toyota Camry, on other hand, is Canada's top-selling midsize car through the first-half of 2016, and while Camry volume is down slightly year-to-date, Camry sales rose 4% to 1962 units in June. That's a 13-month high for the Camry.

Fusion sales, meanwhile, rose to a 59-month high of 2440 sales, thereby carving out a 478-unit margin of victory. The Fusion was last Canada's top-selling midsize car on an annual basis in 2014.

The Fusion was recently refreshed for the 2017 model year.

Let's not get terribly excited about June's radar screen blip. Midsize car sales are down 10% this year, a decline of 5446 sales due to double-digit declines from the Chrysler 200, Hyundai Sonata, Mazda 6, Subaru Legacy, and Volkswagen Passat.

GCBC isn't here to break down segments, an impossible task for any group, but to display sales data for the sake of comparison. The more ways sales data can be displayed, the better. This explains why you'll see the Outback and Venza listed with midsize SUVs, too... because readers have wanted it both ways. There were exceptions to the rule of mandated midsize car decline in June. The Chevrolet Malibu, Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, and Subaru Legacy combined for a 5% increase compared with June 2015.

Year-to-date, the first-half of 2016 revealed a 7% U.S. midsize car sales decline. The Chevrolet Malibu, Honda Accord, and Hyundai Sonata are the upwardly mobile nameplates. The Malibu's midsize market share grew to 10.8% from 8.1% a year ago.

Midsize Car Sales In Canada - May 2016 YTD

2016 Hyundai Sonata orange
Canadian sales of midsize cars plunged 9% in May 2016, a loss of more than 1000 units during a year in which the intermediate car sector is down by more than 6500 sales.

The Toyota Camry narrowly pipped the Honda Accord and Hyundai Sonata for a May 2016 midsize car victory despite its own 19% year-over-year loss. After a brutal start to the year, May 2016 was the best month for Hyundai Canada's Sonata since February of last year.

The Chrysler 200, which is not long for this world, and the suddenly surging Nissan Altima were the only other cars in the core group of the midsize mainstream to post May 2016 improvements.

Outside the midsize mainstream, the Chevrolet Volt broke its all-time monthly record set in April – which had broken the March record – with 270 May 2016 sales, a 358% year-over-year increase.

The Volt handily outsold the discouragingly unpopular Mazda 6 and came within 29 sales of catching the Subaru Legacy.

Is the Volt quickly becoming a reasonable, if undersized, alternative to conventional midsize cars? The second-generation Volt has an all-electric range of 85 kilometres. In the right jurisdiction,  British Columbia for instance, the Volt's $40,090 price is cut by $5000.
