Top 28 Best-Selling SUV/Crossover Brands In America - November 2015 YTD

2014 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk red
No automobile brand in America sells more SUVs than one of two automobile brands which exclusively sells SUVs and crossovers: Jeep.

In a category that's grown 15% in the first 11 months, Jeep volume is up 23%, boosted not only by the addition of the Renegade but by massive increases in Jeep's established models. Cherokee sales, for example, are up 22%, and the Wrangler has recorded a 16% year-over-year increase.

Meanwhile, Ford, the top-ranked seller of SUVs and crossovers in America in 2014, isn't growing its utility vehicle volume nearly as quickly as most other automakers. To blame, during a year in which Ford has recorded big gains with the Edge and Explorer, are the Escape's 1% downturn, the Expedition's 7% decline, and the Flex's 19% plunge.

Chevrolet accounts for 54% of the SUVs and crossovers sold by General Motors' four brands. No manufacturer, not even Jeep's FCA parent company, sells more utility vehicles in America than General Motors, where total SUV/CUV sales are up 13% to 1,013,455 units in 2015's first 11 months.
GM's Cadillac brand is America's sixth-ranked premium brand overall but in terms of SUVs and crossovers, Cadillac ranks fourth. Sales of Cadillac utility vehicles – the SRX, Escalade, and Escalade ESV – are up 23% in 2015. Cadillac outsells Audi, the fifth-ranked premium brand seller of utilities, by a wide 17,598-unit margin. (Audi has already sold 44,923 more cars in 2015 than Cadillac.)

America's top-selling premium brand SUV/CUV is the Lexus RX, and along with 88,711 RX sales in 2015's first 11 months, Lexus has also sold 38,630 copies of the NX, 22,094 GX460s, and 2992 LX570s.
2016 Lexus RX350 red
Lexus's 152,427 utility vehicle sales in 2015, a 30% year-over-year increase, make Lexus the top-selling premium seller of utility vehicles in America. Indeed, Lexus has widened its lead over the next-best-selling Mercedes-Benz brand in 2015 to 30,992 units through 11 months, up from 12,440 in the same period in 2014.

Lexus vs. Acura vs. Infiniti: U.S. Sales 2006-2015

2016 Lexus RX350 F Sport
The late 80s were a time of great revolution for the Japanese auto industry. Not only did Honda forge an upmarket path with Acura, but compatriot automakers Nissan and Toyota did the same with Infiniti, and Lexus, respectively.

The path has not been a straightforward one for Infiniti. Sales in 2015 will rise for a a third consecutive year and will reach an eight-year high, perhaps even a ten-year high-water mark. But Infiniti is still not able to fully replicate the success of 2004 and 2005, when the newly launched G35 captured hearts and potential BMW 3-Series buyers.

2016 Infiniti QX60
The market has expanded – interest in luxury cars is rising. Infiniti rests hope on new entry-level machines, the Mercedes-Benz CLA-based Q30 and QX30. That should help produce greater volume, something Infiniti dealers sorely lack.

Acura is another story, though one let down in recent years by lackluster passenger car efforts. The brand which built its image on affordable performance and supremely reliable entry-level luxury sedans doesn't have the reliability reputation now that it did in the 90s, nor does Acura offer any affordable performance car.

Click Chart To Expand
Acura will attempt in the next year to restore performance credibility with the second-generation NSX supercar, but that rarely seen machine won't change the fact that young men once wanted an Integra GS-R, and now Acura must wait and hope that those young men, grow up, get married, have kids, and want an MDX.

Acura sales in 2015 are expected to rise to an eight-year high, as befits any automaker in a record-setting year for auto sales seven years removed from the beginning of a recession. Acura sold 210,000 new vehicles in 2005, the year before our chart began. Sales in 2015 are down approximately 16% since then.
Acura sold 137,938 cars, 54,121 MDXs, and the first 9164 RDXs in 2006. In 2015, Acura will be lucky to sell 70,000 cars and MDX sales are down 12% year-over-year. The MDX and RDX now account for 61% of brand-wide sales.

By far the most successful Japanese luxury entrant is Toyota's Lexus division. Not only does Lexus dominate this post's accompanying sales chart, Lexus was also the top-selling premium auto brand in America for 11 consecutive years between 2000 and 2010, pipping not only its Japanese foes but Cadillac, Lincoln, and the Germans, too.

BMW vs. Mercedes-Benz vs. Audi: U.S. Sales 2006-2015

2016 BMW 3-Series
2015 is expected to be the second consecutive year and the ninth in the last ten years that BMW USA has sold more new vehicles than its German rival, Mercedes-Benz. 2013, was the lone exception to the rule, as the big Stuttgart luxury automaker outsold its Munich foe in America by a narrow 3254-unit margin.

Mercedes-Benz and BMW are both increasingly dependent on SUVs/crossovers for their U.S. sales volume. Through the first 11 months of 2015, 33% of the BMWs sold in America were X1s, X3s, X4s, X5s, and X6s

When this chart began, back in 2006, BMW's X3 and X5 – the lone SAVs at that point – generated just 21% of BMW's volume. BMW sold variants of the 3-Series, 5-Series, 6-Series, 7-Series, Z4, X3, and X5 in 2006, along with five remaining Z8s. In 2015, BMW sells a 2-Series, 3-Series, 4-Series, 5-Series, 6-Series, 7-Series, Z4, i3, i8, X1, X3, X4, X5, and X6.

At Mercedes-Benz, 39% of the brand's non-Sprinter/Metris sales in 2015 are SUV/CUV-derived. Volume generated by the G-Class, GL-Class, GLA-Class, GLC-Class, GLE-Class, GLK-Class, and M-Class totalled 121,435 units in 2015's first 11 months, a 16% year-over-year increase.

That compares with BMW's 102,100 SUV/CUV sales, a 5% improvement. Mercedes-Benz's passenger cars are down 2% to 187,450; BMW's are up 4% to 209,298.

In 2006, Mercedes-Benz's SUV division consisted of the G-Class, GL-Class, and M-Class. In the future, the GLK will be extinguished in favour of GLC nomenclature. The GLE is replacing the M-Class as we speak. The GL-Class will become the GLS.
2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class
Mercedes-Benz and BMW aren't the only high-volume premium brands from Germany, of course. Between 2006 and 2015, U.S. sales at Audi jumped 121%. Indeed, since the industry-wide disaster of 2009, Audi sales are up 141%. BMW USA volume rose just 73% since 2009; Mercedes-Benz just 77%.

Audi's product portfolio in 2006 was significantly smaller than it is now. The A3 hatchback, A4, A6, A8, TT, and Q7 attempted to lure luxury car buyers. In 2015, the A3 lineup has greatly expanded, and Audi also sells the A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, R8, TT, Q3, Q5, and Q7.
2015 Audi Q5
The Q5 is the brand's best-selling model and helped to generate a 33% improvement in SUV/CUV sales to 75,843 units in 2015's first 11 months. Audi car sales are up 1% to 106,320 so far this year.

BMW and Mercedes-Benz have combined to outsell the former number one seller of luxury vehicles in America, Lexus, every year since 2011, when Lexus sales, hampered by a post-Tōhoku earthquake crisis, slid 13% and BMW jumped 13%.

America's Five Fastest Growing Auto Brands In 2015 - A Decade Of Market Share

2016 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque white
Compared with the first 11 months of 2014, the list of the five fastest-growing automobile brands in the United States in 2015 include two brands which only build SUVs, one brand which sells only one niche model without all-wheel-drive, and two resurgent auto brands which generate the majority of their sales with utility vehicles.

U.S. auto sales volume has grown 5.4% through the January-November period of 2015, and 17 auto brands are growing faster than the market average.

For the purposes of this list, we've excluded Alfa Romeo. Alfa sells but one model, the 4C, and didn't sell it for most of 2014. Alfa's year-over-year gain, therefore, is obviously going to be significant, and at 2425%, it is.
USA fastest growing auto brands 2015
#5: SUBARU +13.5%
Consumers want practical, affordable, high-riding, all-wheel-drive vehicles. Subaru has a bunch of examples for you to try on, from the small XV Crosstrek to the bigger Forester to the wagon-like Outback. The trio is up 12% to 375,459 U.S. sales in 2015, or about seven out of every ten Subaru sales.

#4: VOLVO +18.0%
How desperate was Volvo for the XC90? After their former best seller crumbled over the course of a decade to eventually form only 7.5% of Volvo's U.S.s ales in 2014, the XC90 is once again outselling other Volvos in America. In November, Volvo volume jumped 91% as the XC90 generated 32% of Volvo's sales.

#3: MITSUBISHI +23.0%
Granted, Mitsubishi is rising from a low. The brand sold more than 300,000 new vehicles in America in 2002. Now, in 2015, the best year for Mitsubishi since the recession began in 2008, Mitsubishi is selling around 8000 vehicles per month, or about 95,000 in a year.

U.S. Auto Sales Brand Rankings - November 2015 YTD

#2: JEEP +23.3%
The market share of SUVs and crossovers in America has grown from 32.1% in 2014 to 35.1% in 2015. Which auto brand is better positioned to take advantage of this surge in SUV/CUV demand than Jeep, which only markets affordable utility vehicles? The addition of the Renegade has helped, but even without that subcompact utility, Jeep sales are up 15% in 2015.

#1: LAND ROVER +35.9%
The greatest year-over-year gain, therefore, belongs to Land Rover, sales of which are up 36% in 2015. A new model, the Discovery Sport, is far more successful than the departing LR2 was a year ago. But the majority of Land Rover's sales aren't produced by the entry-level Disco Sport. The Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, Land Rover's two most costly models, generate 57% of Land Rover's U.S. volume. Their sales are up 41% and 21%, respectively.

November 2015 YTD Mini USA Car Sales: 53% Of Minis Sold In America Have Four Doors

Over the first 11 months of 2015, 53% of the Minis sold in America are of the four-door variety.

That figure includes 13,942 Mini Cooper Hardtop 4-Doors and the Mini Countryman's 14,538 sales.

That figure is about to rise, as the number of sales produced by the upcoming wagon-like Clubman, itself a four-door model, hits the market. The Clubman will steal sales from the Cooper 4-Door and Countryman, but not so many that it won't increase the overall number of sales produced by Mini's bigger models.
2015 Mini Cooper 5-Door S
The Cooper 4-Door's arrival late last year has certainly had a huge impact on sales of the 2-Door Cooper. Consider November's results, as sales of the Cooper Hardtop 4-Door jumped from 235 in 2014 to 1325 in November 2015, while U.S. sales of the Cooper Hardtop 2-Door plunged from 2633 units – as the 4-Door launched – to 1460 units in November 2015.

BMW, the maker of Britain's Mini brand, relies on Mini for 15% of the automaker's U.S. volume. BMW's U.S. sales are up 4.4% to 311,398 so far this year. Mini sold 53,505 cars in the first 11 months of 2015, an 8% increase. Rolls-Royce, another BMW brand, is up 4% to 775 year-to-date sales.

Small And Midsize Luxury SUV Sales In America - November 2015 YTD

2016 Infiniti QX50
As their premium brand passenger car counterparts tumbled in November 2015, U.S. sales of 17 small/entry-level luxury crossovers jumped 34%.

Indeed, that 34% year-over-year improvement occurred during an abbreviated month. Automakers had only 23 days to sell automobiles in November 2015, down from 25 a year ago. As a result, these 17 luxury SUVs and crossovers actually posted a collective 45% increase in their daily selling rate, an increase from 951 sales per day in November 2014 to 1386 sales per day in November 2015.

An extraordinary number of those sales were produced by the BMW X3, sales of which more than doubled in November 2015. Audi and Mercedes-Benz posted 51% and 50% year-over-year gains with their least costly crossovers, the Q3 and GLA, respectively. Infiniti's newly-elongated QX50 posted a 366% jump to a 908 November sales, a low total still, but exceptionally higher than normal. Not since 2008, when the QX50 was still the EX35, have sales risen this high.

Added to those figures are sales from vehicles which weren't fully available at this time a year ago: 4969 Discovery Sports, GLCs, and NXs.

Among larger luxury utility vehicles, the Volvo XC90 continued to position itself as Volvo's best-selling model with 2236 sales. Brand-wide Volvo volume jumped 91% to 6,902 units.
