General Motors USA Sales - October 2010

General Motors sold more vehicles in the United States in October 2010 than Ford Motor Company. that's not the story you'll see when scanning the U.S. Auto Sales By Brand post here, but Ford's 157,935 sales pales in comparison to the 183,759 GM sold. Only 367 of GM's sales in October came from extinct brands. As for Toyota Motor Corporation, the Toyota/Scion/Lexus trio didn't even make it to 150,000.

In other words, remember that when you hear Ford is numero uno, the big cheese, the grand kahuna, whoever's speaking is indicating that Ford, the Blue Oval by itself, is the number one brand. As for automakers competing in the United States, General Motors dominated October 2010. Model-by-model breakdowns for Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC are available after the jump.

As for Cadillac, October wasn't a bad month. Trailing the #3 luxury automaker of the month (Lexus) by nearly 5000 sales isn't a dream month of selling for Cadillac, it certainly wasn't in the cards back in 1987. But times have changed. Securing the #4 spot by selling 2382 more vehicles than Acura isn't a bad place for Cadillac. Year-over-year percentage increases and drops show the CTS and SRX not only making up the majority of Cadillac sales but doing so at a greater rate than in October 2009. That makes sense: your least-expensive models need to be the volume sellers. 2626 total sales of a vehicle which has a starting price of $63,610, the 2011 Cadillac Escalade, is rather useful for profits, too.

Are you surprised to see a truck atop Chevrolet's standings? In October 2010, the Chevrolet Silverado improved on September's sales as well as the year-over-year comparison with October 2009. The same can't be said of every Chevrolet, particularly the dying Cobalt, but the brand as a whole posted 6.7% increase over October 2009.

If Buick continues as America's fastest-growing brand, these sorts of numbers are going to appear low in hindsight. Enclave sales shot up in October, improving even on last month's totals. When GMC puts together a month in which every single model posts huge gains over the same period one year ago while also upping the ante from September, one wonders why people cried out for GMC's head instead of Pontiac's. Scion iQ Fuel Economy Ratings

Oft-discussed but never touched, official fuel economy figures for the 2011 Scion iQ are now available (and now, official U.S. numbers too.) Canada's Office Of Energy Efficiency has ratings for numerous new models available in their searchable database, one of which is the anxiously awaited Scion iQ. Expected to be Canada's sixth most economical car, the iQ's figures are jaw-droppingly good.

2011 Scion iQ city fuel economy: 5.5 litres/100 km
2011 Scion iQ highway fuel economy: 4.6 litres/100km

These numbers translate to 43 miles per gallon in the city and 51 miles per gallon on the highway.

It should be noted that the OEE/Natural Resources Canada figures aren't as close to reality as their U.S. counterparts from Fueleconomy.gov. GoodCarBadCar.net's 2009 smart fortwo, like the 2011 smart fortwo, is rated at 33/41 miles per gallon by the EPA - quite attainable numbers - but 5.7/4.8 L/100km by the OEE - quite challenging to attain. Expect the EPA's numbers eventually manifested on Fueleconomy.gov to be more in line with reachable figures. Nevertheless, The Good Car Guy is prepared to up GoodCarBadCar.net's April prediction from 35/42 mpg to 37/45 mpg.

As for the Scion iQ price, we finally have the answer.

Volvo Canada Sales - October 2010

Last year at this time, Volvo Canada sales had dipped 16% to 380 units. While paying attention to Volvo's positive returns in October 2010, keep October 2008 at the front of your mind. In October 2008, Volvo Canada sold 453 vehicles.... and there was no XC60.

Set aside October 2009 for a moment longer. The long-in-tooth 2010 Volvo XC90 wasn't so long in the tooth two years ago. Volvo sold 133 XC90s in October 2008. Volvo also sold 150 of its small cars - the C30, S40, and V50 - whereas October 2010 only saw Volvo sell 91 examples of that trio in Canada. Yeah, the new XC60 is helping, and it's a good thing it is. Other Volvo models are being rejected like overcooked fish in a sushi bar. Sure, there isn't a huge market for hardtop convertibles, in October, in Canada, from Sweden, but Volvo managed to sell 12 of them last year. As in the U.S., you can be partially justified in claiming the 2011 Volvo S60 isn't in the full swing of things. But last month, when the swing had not fully swung, Volvo sold more S60s.

Volvo Canada sales were down in October 2009 when BMW and Mercedes-Benz and Audi all posted sales improvements over October 2008. This year, Volvo improved. But so did BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi. The rules of this game are changing, and it appears Volvo is not part of the rules committee. The game is moving on.

Volvo USA Sales - October 2010

Volvo car sales in the United States were down 9.9% from a not wildly high October 2009. Yes, Volvo sales were up last year, but only up to the point at which Volvo USA was the ninth-best-selling luxury car brand in America. Lo and behold, Volvo USA was the ninth-best-selling luxury car brand in America in October 2010, as well. Sales go up; sales go down; Volvo is a long way from battling even Lincoln for eighth place.

Volvo's most popular model in October wasn't their most recently introduced model, the 2011 Volvo S60. No, the S60 wasn't even as successful as the struggling S80, a car long-thought to be uncompetitive. It's true that the new Volvo S60 hasn't really had time in the marketplace to "meet people", but sales are actually down from last month.

So why does a Volvo fan harp on Volvo's struggles? And why aren't Volvo's selling? Volvo's message is perhaps a bit muddied: safety then style, style then safety. In the end, Volvos compete in really challenging segments and there are numerous less successful cars in those segments. Volvo just happens to put a few middling performers together, an act which combined for 3996 American sales in October.

Top 10 Best-Selling SUVs In America - October 2010

Eight different brands are represented in this list of the Top 10 Best-Selling SUVs In America for October 2010. That's up from seven in September 2010 and most months before. What's different? Not a soul should be surprised to discover that every utility vehicle segment is levelling off. Everybody and their dog is selling some sort of SUV or CUV or crossover these days. Many of them are bound to be competitive, if not the ones engineered by dogs then the ones done with AutoCAD.

There's not a lot of off-road capability in this bunch. Most people interested in the 2011 Lexus RX350 have no intention of doing anything more than crawling a curb. The Nissan Rogue and Chevrolet Equinox are about as rock-hop ready as the Nissan Sentra and Chevrolet Malibu. And the 2010 Honda CR-V? It seems to want to avoid all sorts of confrontation. This basically leaves the all new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, an SUV capable of fording rivers in slow motion.

On-road, however, these ten most popular utility vehicles make regular three-box family cars seem low and lacking in versatility. For the record, Toyota RAV4 sales for the calendar year-to-date stand at 141,085. The Ford Escape is out in front with 157,398 and the Honda CR-V is in the #1 spot with 162,326 sales.

Top 5 Best-Selling Trucks In America - October 2010

Retaining the same order as at least the six months prior and the 2009 calendar year, America's Top 5 Best-Selling Trucks are some of the most firmly entrenched products in American society. Say what you will about Toyota's inability to conquer the pickup truck world like they did with the Camry and passenger cars, the Tundra isn't a terribly unpopular vehicle. Combined sales of the two Toyota pickups on this list were 16,215 in October 2009. Combined sales of the Dodge Ram and Dodge Dakota were 1875 units greater.

U.S. sales of the Toyota Tacoma in October were up 1.2%. Toyota Tundra sales fell 4.6%. Chevrolet Silverado sales rose 8% to 34,283 ; GMC Sierra sales jumped 13.2% to 12,983. Dodge Ram sales shot up 41% and Ford F-Series sales moved up 24.2% from October 2009's total of 39,496.

Top 10 Best-Selling Cars In America - October 2010

As is readily apparent from the lack of triple-up arrows, the ten vehicles which make up America's Top 10 Best-Selling Cars are the same group present in this place in September 2010. Sure, there's been some shifting around, but three cars are in the exact same spot they were last month, including the most popular car in America, the Toyota Camry. Although you'll find the 2011 Ford Fiesta at #1 in the UK and, more likely than not, the 2010 Honda Civic at #1 in Canada, the Camry reigns in the USofA.

It's worth pointing out that minivans aren't eligible for GoodCarBadCar.net's Top 10 Best-Selling Cars list, or the SUV list, or the trucks list, but the Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan combined to sell 16,663 units in October. If the duo was eligible, and eligible as a duo, that would place them eighth on this list and knock the Chevrolet Malibu off. In the end, the Malibu stays, which makes for four domestic contenders. Truthfully, all cars here are built in either the United States or Canada, except the Mexico-built Ford Fusion. 24,344 Accord sales include 2893 Accord Crosstours.

Top 10 Best-Selling Cars In The UK - October 2010

As was the case in September, declining car sales in the United Kingdom are only declining in the face of artificially inflated car sales from October 2009. Britain's Scrappage Incentive Scheme boosted new car sales so current numbers appear underwhelming. The facts: new vehicle registrations in the UK fell 22.2% in October 2009. The Society Of Motor Manufacturers And Traders Limited, SMMT, believes new car sales will show declines in November and December, too, but the overall market in 2010 should end up with greater numbers than in 2009.

131,495 new vehicles were sold in the UK in October. There were 123,154 new vehicle sales in Canada in October, based on these figures. Automakers in the United States sold 950,145 new vehicles according to Autoblog. The nameplates which made up those sales are very, very different. In the UK, two companies represented in the Top 10 don't even sell vehicles in North America.

This month, rather than writing up an analysis on each product, for which you should check earlier versions of this post, we'll show you the direction in which the vehicle is trending compared with September 2010. These are the Top 10 Best-Selling Cars In The United Kingdom.

U.S. Auto Sales By Brand - October 2010

Subtract Scion's 4654 sales from Toyota's total in the gigantic list below and you know what you have? Toyota drops to number 3 in October 2010 U.S. new vehicle sales; Chevrolet slides into number 2. However, that's not what the list says. We'll concentrate on what is, rather than what could've been.

Toyota Motor Sales America suffered a sales decline during a month in which nearly every automaker improved on October 2009's totals. Now, this says something about Toyota's October 2009, a month where Toyota sales slid 2.3%. But Toyota was #1 at this time last year, and this slide hasn't affected Toyota terribly. Keep in mind, Toyota has its light truck fleet to thank: the car division was down 19.6%. Truck and SUV sales rose, along with sales of the 2011 Toyota Sienna.

Enough about Toyota. Though the Toyota Camry was America's most popular car in October, once again, Ford was the best selling car brand in America. The Ford F-Series was the best-selling vehicle overall.

Discounting three defunct General Motors brands, only three automakers sold at lower levels in October 2010 than in October 2009. Sharing the dunce cap with Toyota are Mini and smart. Discount the Clubman and Mini sales actually improved.

Jeep improved on October 2009 at the greatest rate; sales of the company's six SUVs jumped 111%. The dying Commander was the only Jeep not to post higher sales this October than last. Lexus was America's best-selling luxury brand in October. Lexus is in a dogfight with BMW and Mercedes-Benz for the luxury crown with two months to go and only a handful of sales separating the trio.
