Top 11 Best-Selling Pickup Trucks In America - January 2017

2017 Chevrolet Silverado red
Pickup truck sales jumped 4% in the United States in January 2017, a positive start to a year that hasn't started nearly so positively for many automakers. Lexus and Acura, for instance, suffered their lowest-volume months since January 2012.

U.S. Vehicle Sales Rankings By Model - January 2017

But trucks, and full-size trucks in particular, generated more American sales activity in January 2017 than in January 2016. Thank the Ford F-Series, America's best-selling vehicle line, most of all. F-Series sales jumped 13% while sales of its prime competitor, the Chevrolet Silverado, slid 6%.

Midsize trucks, meanwhile, grew only 2.5% after surging throughout 2016. The Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier, the latter most especially, couldn't match January 2016's pace. The gains produced by GM's midsize twins and the Honda Ridgeline only barely counteracted the Tacoma/Frontier losses.

Midsize pickup truck market share slid to 15.5% in January 2017 from 15.7% in January 2016 and 16.7% in the 2016 calendar year.

Pickup truck sales in America dipped slightly in the May 2016, a loss attributed to a shorter sales month caused by a quirk in the calendar.

Year-over-year, pickup truck sales were down 2%, but the daily selling rate was actually up 7%, an per day sales increase of nearly 600 units.

The Ford F-Series' 9% increase in outright volume produced 67,412 sales for the best-selling line of vehicles in America, 4735 sales ahead of the full-size GM twins from Chevrolet and GMC.

But the Ford's five top rivals all posted losses in May 2016, including noteworthy declines from the Chevrolet Silverado and Toyota Tundra.

Among small/midsize trucks, total sales grew 5.5% to 37,964 units. Led by the Toyota Tacoma, the sub-category claimed 17.5% of all U.S. pickup truck sales in May 2016.

Top 13 Best-Selling Pickup Trucks In America - November 2015 YTD

2016 Nissan Titan XD
In November 2015, for the first time since March of this year, Ford's full-size F-Series truck lineup outsold the combined efforts of GM's full-size twins, the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra.

The F-Series posted a 10% year-over-year U.S. sales improvement in November 2015, a gain of 6143 sales compared with November 2013. Because of a sharp 27% drop in Sierra sales, the GM twins were 3664 sales abaft. Year-to-date, the second-ranked Silverado and fourth-ranked Sierra are 39,110 sales ahead of the Ford. The F-Series outsold the GM twins in each of the last five years.

U.S. Vehicle Sales Rankings By Model - November 2015 YTD

None of the four top-selling full-size trucks are likely to suffer a great deal of lost sales to the second-generation Nissan Titan, launched first in medium-duty XD form. But don't base your ideas of what Nissan can achieve with the new Titan on November's paltry performance. Only 719 Titans were sold last month, but there was a time, albeit a decade ago, when Nissan was selling more than 7000 Titans per month.

The Toyota Tacoma-controlled small/midsize pickup truck category recorded a 17% year-over-year improvement in November 2015, dragging the sub-category's market share up from 11.9% in November 2014 to 13.6% in November 2015. The Tacoma earned 50% market share with 13,465 of 27,033 November sales, outselling the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon – combined – by 2136 units.

Top 13 Best-Selling Pickup Trucks In America - May 2015 YTD

2015 Chevrolet Colorado
Although the best-selling Ford F-Series slid 10% and full-size pickup trucks grew by just 1%, the overall U.S. pickup truck market expanded by 7% thanks to huge gains from the small/midsize pickup truck segment.

U.S. Vehicle Sales Rankings By Model - May 2015 YTD

Powered by big Toyota Tacoma gains and the best months yet for both the new Chevrolet Colorado and the new GMC Canyon, midsize pickup truck sales jumped 51% to 34,767 units, equal to 15.8% of the overall truck market. Year-to-date, midsize pickups are up 51% to form 15.2% of the truck market with 151,208 sales.

Aside from the F-Series, full-size truck sales increased sharply. The Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra twins from General Motors outsold the F-Series by 8709 units in May thanks in large part to the Silverado's third 50K+ sales month in the last 29 months. Ram P/U sales jumped 8%, the Toyota Tundra increased modestly, and Nissan Titan volume was up, too. Total non-F-Series full-size truck sales were up 8%.

So far this year, the Ford F-Series is America's best-selling truck line. But GM's twins have outsold the F-Series by 4497 units through the end of May. They haven't done so on a calendar year basis since 2009.
