Small And Midsize Luxury SUV Sales In Canada - April 2016 YTD

2016 BMW X1
Canadian sales of the smallest premium utility vehicles rose 29% in April 2016 despite sliding Mercedes-Benz GLA sales.

The Audi Q3 recorded its best month ever, as Canadians seemingly disagree with GoodCarBadCar's March review. Sales of the BMW X1, meanwhile, rose to a 25-month high of 423 units, a 59% year-over-year increase.

Up a notch in size and price – and a few notches in prestige and panache – the Audi Q5 also recorded its best-ever monthly Canadian sales total. In the Q5's case, this meant outselling all other premium SUVs and crossovers with 908 April sales, more than double the Q3's April total.

Year-to-date, Canada's top-selling premium utility is the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, the ML's replacement. GLE sales are up 46%, year-over-year.

On a percentage basis, the BMW X1, Infiniti QX50, Audi Q7, Lexus RX, and Lincoln MKX, Infiniti QX80, and Lexus LX570 are the premium utilities with greater growth rates than the GLE.

GCBC isn't here to break down segments, an impossible task for any group, but to display sales data for the sake of comparison. The more ways sales data can be displayed, the better. This explains you'll see the XC70 listed with luxury cars as well as with SUVs and crossovers and the Touareg with luxury SUVs and mainstream SUVs... because readers have wanted it both ways. You can always find the sales results for EVERY vehicle and form your own competitive sets by using the All Vehicle Rankings posts.

2016 Infiniti QX80
Canada's favourite flagship luxury SUVs suffered modest but measurable downturns in April 2016, but the segment continues to roar ahead of 2015's pace thanks to gains produced across the board.

Through the first-third of 2016, Canadian sales of the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class are up 5%, and as availability of the updated, renamed GLS-Class improves, sales should rise more quickly. Cadillac Escalade volume is up 6%, a gain of 44 sales through the first four months of 2016.

Infiniti and Land Rover have both added to their QX80 and Range Rover tallies – QX80 volume is up 80% so far this year, and the big Infiniti shot past the 100-unit mark for the second consecutive month, and just the second time ever.

Lower-volume contenders from Lexus and Lincoln are also on the rise, particularly in the Land Cruiser-based LX570's case. The Navigator now trails every member of the pack, though 2016 is on track to be the big Expedition-based Lincoln's third consecutive year of growth.

Small SUV Sales In Canada - April 2016 YTD

2016 Mazda CX-3 red
Canadian sales of subcompact crossovers more than doubled in April 2016 to nearly 7000 units, or nearly 700 sales per contender. New vehicles – the Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-3, and Fiat 500X weren't available at this point in 2015 – contributed more than one-third of the sector's sales.

Indeed, the Honda HR-V and Mazda CX-3 are consistently Canada's two top-selling subcompact crossovers. 12,125 HR-Vs have been sold in Canada since last June; 9932 CX-3s have been sold in Canada since last May.

Keep in mind, the Buick Encore and Chevrolet Trax twins easily outsell the top-ranked HR-V.

Sales of the RAV4 jumped 19% to 4985 units in April 2016, an all-time monthly sales record for Toyota Canada's best-selling vehicle.
