Though Canadian sales of conventional midsize cars bucked their own trend to report an 11% year-over-year sales increase in June 2016, their larger brethren tumbled 23% in June.

Sharp decreases at Chrysler, Dodge, and Ford were largely to blame. The 300, Charger, and Taurus combined for 677 fewer sales in June 2016 than in June 2015. The trio's market share slid from 69% in June 2015 to 52% this year. 

Year-to-date, the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles fraternal twins are down 23%.

The 300 and Charger continue to lead the category, however, earning more Canadian sales than any other volume brand large sedan. 

The Nissan Maxima and Chevrolet Impala are making inroads relative to their 2015 performances, but every car on the ledger remain relatively uncommon in Canada, where the 300 and Charger are assembled.

Canadians haven't wanted big, volume brand sedans for a long time. But Canadians want big, volume brand sedans a lot less now than they used to.

In May 2016, for instance, nine upmarket volume brand sedans combined to produce 21% fewer Canadian sales than in May 2015. And yet that 21% drop translates to only 523 lost sales because there were hardly any Canadians buying these cars to begin with last May.

The segment leaders – fleet-friendly FCA twins from Brampton, Ontario – combined for a 34% decline in May 2016. The Chrysler 300's 766 sales still topped the category.

Nissan's Maxima is the big mover and shaker, rising 2200% from what was basically a between-generations hiatus at this point a year ago. But four rivals – including a trio of Canadian-built cars – outsold the Maxima in May. 

The sharpest declines through the first five months of 2016 belong to the Toyota Avalon, down 38%, and the Dodge Charger, down 29% this year.

Canadian sales of full-size volume brand cars recovered modestly in April 2016 despite losses from the two segment leaders, FCA's Brampton, Ontario-built Chrysler/Dodge twins.

The Chrysler 300 slipped 2% from its April 2015 total to 865 sales in April 2016. Based on recent history, more than half of the 300s sold in Canada in the 2016 calendar year will be sold this quarter.

Dodge Charger volume tumbled 15% to 666 units. Together, the 300 and Charger easily outsold the Buick LaCrosse and Chevrolet Impala – and Ford Taurus – by 639 units in April.

Regardless of the volume achieved by respective members of the segment and the order in which they fall, any year-over-year recovery in the category masks the fact that these vehicles simply don't attract the level of attention they did even a short time ago. 

Compared with the first four months of 2013, sales are down 18%.

As GM Canada approaches the launch of the third-generation Buick LaCrosse, sales of the current model enter free-fall mode. Even before Buick introduced the new LaCrosse at the Los Angeles Auto Show, Canadian sales of the LaCrosse were declining. But November sales slid 48%.

Is it enough that the new LaCrosse is a stunning, righteously Buick sedan? Across North America, consumers are losing interest in full-size sedans, opting instead for very roomy and more affordable midsize cars or three-row crossovers. Consider the fact that the LaCrosse and all its competitors generated only 1408 Canadian sales in November 2015 while the highest-volume midsize car, the Honda Accord, produced 1306 Canadian sales on its own.

Year-to-date, much of the segment's increase has been powered by the launch of a new Nissan Maxima and the clear-out of older Maximas. 

Sales of the LaCrosse, Impala, 300, Taurus, Genesis, and Avalon have all declined through the first 11 months of 2015.

After averaging fewer than 50 monthly Maxima sales over the first five months of 2015, Nissan has generated an average of 221 monthly sales of the newly relaunched eighth-generation over the last five months.

This doesn't mean the Maxima has returned to the glory days of the high-volume 4DSC. As recently as 2004, Nissan sold more than 430 Maximas per month. As Nissan began marketing the Altima as its core midsize car, however, and began to make the Altima available with the Maxima's engine, the Maxima waned. (Unfortunately, Altima sales have waned, as well.)

With a strong October performance, the Maxima trailed only the Dodge Charger and Chevrolet Impala in terms of full-size sedan Canadian sales volume last month. 

This means the Maxima easily outsold the Chrysler 300, Ford Taurus, Buick LaCrosse, Hyundai Genesis, and Kia Cadenza. 

Meanwhile, the Maxima's compatriot, Toyota's Avalon, slid 14% to only 68 October sales, one-third the Maxima's total.
