November 2012 Minivan Sales In America

American vehicle owners registered 38,382 new minivans in November 2012. Eight different vans competed for attention. The top four vans accounted for 87% of the market's volume.

Even though the Dodge Grand Caravan fell to third place in November 2012 sales, it remains the top-ranked van in the year-to-date standings. Dodge's lead over the Honda Odyssey did shrink, however, to  10,454 sales. With the top two podium positions clearly established, the fight worth watching in December has the Grand Caravan's Chrysler twin facing off against the Toyota Sienna. Through eleven months, the Sienna is 1354 sales ahead of the Town & Country.

At this point in 2011, Americans had purchased or leased 441,669 new minivans. Sales are up to 506,025 this year, a 14.6% improvement that outpaces the overall industry's growth by a little less than a percentage point.

In fact, Chrysler has already sold more Town & Countrys this year than in all of 2011. The same can be said in regards to the Dodge Grand Caravan and Honda Odyssey, both of which accomplished that feat in ten months, and the Nissan Quest, which (not surprisingly) outperformed 2011 year-end total in the first eight months of 2012.

November 2012 Commercial Van Sales In America

U.S. sales of the Ram Cargo Van were significantly higher in November 2012 than in November 2011, but it remains an unlikely purchase for the vast majority of commercial van buyers. Of the 21,683 vans registered in November 2012 by electricians, water purification installers, and regular people who need space for a dozen kids, only 3.4% were Ram Cargo Vans.

The new Fiat Ducato-based Ram ProMaster will likely do big things for the brand's share of the category, however. Announced late last month, the ProMaster should be quite a bit different from the Ducato, Ram says. But the cargo hold you see in the above image will presumably go unaltered.

We can expect to see the Euro-derived, E-Series-replacing Ford Transit continue in its place atop the leaderboard. Its margin of victory at the end of each and every month may not be so significant when Ram provides its challenger.

November 2012 Pickup Truck Sales In America

15 pickup truck nameplates collected 154,369 U.S. buyers in November 2012. 36% of those sales occurred in Ford showrooms. Sales of Ford's F-Series jumped 18% last month. Year-to-date, the F-Series' growth of 12% is slightly below the overall industry's 14% gains, but it's hugely impressive nonetheless.

General Motors collected a total of 45,991 pickup truck sales in November 2012. That's 25% of the company's total U.S. volume. GM has improved incentives of late, but even with sufficient inventory, sales have been in decline. The trucks are old; this isn't surprising. But now that GM has shown the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and the 2014 GMC Sierra, it isn't going to get any easier to convince customers to buy the aging GMT900 truck twins, not if they can wait a few months for the much improved 2014s.

18% of the new pickup trucks registered in America last month were sold by import brands. Sales of the Honda Ridgeline, Toyota Tundra, and fifth-ranked Toyota Tacoma are all growing at an above-average clip this year.

November 2012 Sporty Car Sales And Premium Sporty Car Sales In America

Chevrolet reported that November 2012 was its worst U.S. Camaro sales month in two years. Ford's Mustang took advantage of the opportunity to shrink the Chevy's lead. Mustang sales shot up 37% in November 2012, and the Camaro's lead over the Ford now stands at just 1096 units with one month remaining.

Year-to-date, sales of the Camaro are down 4% while sales of the Dodge Challenger and Ford Mustang are up 8% and 19%, respectively. 2012 will end as the Mustang's best American sales year since 2008.

Because BMW has chosen to rename the coupe and convertible 3-Series' as the 4-Series, we are assured that sales figures for these cars will be available sometime next year. Presently, GoodCarBadCar groups the 3-Series with small/entry luxury cars alongside the Audi A4, the full Infiniti G family, and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

For the numbers-obsessed, this is great news. But why are they inventing a new call sign for one of the few alphanumerically-named cars with name recognition? 328i means something, not just to auto enthusiasts but to the vaguely interested. 435i sounds like you're late getting off work.

The majority of sporting automobiles don't line up directly with one another. One group that does appear to form a competitive set is the German quintet: TT, Z4, SLK, Boxster, Cayman. That sales race could have been called long before the end of November. With one of 2012's months remaining, the Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class is very nearly as popular as the TT and Z4 combined. The Benz easily outsells the Porsche duo. There is one change to report. As a result of the recent surge by the third-generation 981 Boxster, it now ranks second in the group.

As much as GoodCarBadCar would prefer to include the Hyundai Veloster Turbo and not the whole Veloster range, Hyundai doesn't release sales figures that way. Neither does any other automaker. The Veloster, full Mini Cooper range, and Volkswagen Beetle are also listed in the small car section of GoodCarBadCar. New to this month's sporty car sales chart is the cushy Volkswagen Beetle Convertible. Four were sold in November. We only hope Volkswagen USA continues to offer this breakdown. 1983 Beetle hardtops were sold, as well.

Clearly GoodCarBadCar is not suggesting that the cars in the two tables above are all direct competitors. Establishing categories among cars as unique as even the Audi TT and Porsche Boxster has never pleased a single reader, so cars have been lumped together so you can simply see how buyers looking for sports cars, roadsters, hot hatches, convertibles, GTs, and wanna-be sports cars spend their money. Greater categorization of cars would only lead to problems that automakers create by not isolating model-specific sales figures: we don't know how many M3s BMW has sold or how many Civics are Si models, for example. The numbers we do have are listed above.

Lexus sold more LS sedans in America in November 2012 than at any time since December 2012. While that wasn't enough to make the LS the best-selling luxury limo in the United States - a title once again held by the Mercedes-Benz S-Class - it is more than enough to make it clear that Lexus wants to regain its crown. LS sales jumped 57% compared with October and were up 37% year-over-year.

Porsche's Panamera has sold more often than the LS through the first eleven months of this year but only sold about half as often as the LS in November 2012. 2.4 LS sedans found buyers for every one A8 buyer that Audi secured.

And the Jaguar XJ? Sales have slowed to a crawl, and the LS was nearly five times as popular in November. In a market that's risen 14% this year, Jaguar XJ sales are down 8%. XK sales, by the way, are down 4%. The one Jaguar that's on the rise, the XF, has enjoyed a 6% sales increase this year. But the XF is way down on 2010's pace, which was 18% down on 2009's results.

Fortunately for Tata, the owner of Jaguar, the company's U.S. interests also include the Land Rover brand. As Jaguar sales fell 1.4% in the first eleven months of 2012, Land Rover sales are up 15%. The Range Rover is a bad example of Land Rover's success, at least right now. As the old model aged and the new version slowly picks up the slack, Range Rover sales fell 23% this year. This should change in a matter of weeks, if not months.
