Minivan Sales In Canada - June 2016 YTD

Canadian minivan sales growth slowed dramatically in June 2016. After growing 15% through the first five months of 2016, MPV volume climbed just 1% in June, a year-over-year improvement of only 106 units.

It wasn't just the quickly disappearing mini-MPV sector that brought the category down, either. The oxymoronically named full-size minivan sector was up just 1%, a gain of only 131 sales, as the transition from Chrysler Town & Country to Chrysler Pacifica brought Chrysler brand minivan sales down by nearly 1600 sales.

That gap was more than made up for by the Town & Country's affordable partner, the Dodge Grand Caravan which generates six in ten Canadian minivan sales and is currently selling at a neckbreaking pace.

But Toyota Sienna sales also took a dive, a dive which was not cancelled out by a Honda Odyssey June surge.

Minivan volume continues to rapidly expand after a challenging year in 2015 caused in large part by a plant shutdown at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' Windsor, Ontario, minivan factory.

But that shutdown occurred to enable the launch of the Chrysler Pacifica, which finally outsold its predecessor, the Chrysler Town & Country, in June 2016. Together, the Pacifica, its successor, and its successor long-running Dodge Grand Caravan twin – the best-selling minivan in America this year and in June – owned 47% of the U.S. minivan market in June 2016.

U.S. sales of the Toyota Sienna, 2015's calendar year leader, fell 4% in the first-half of 2016 and 12% in June, specifically. Set to be replaced shortly, the Honda Odyssey is on a minor upswing.

Kia Sedona volume continued to grow, but it remains a relatively low-volume player by the leaders' standards, even with June sales rising to the highest level yet for the new van. 

Only one in ten minivan customers chose a Sedona in June. Indeed, the Kia's market share declined, year-over-year.

Minivan Sales In Canada - May 2016 YTD

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Canada's top-selling automobile manufacturer, backed up a record-setting Dodge Grand Caravan sales performance in April 2016 with yet more massive output in May. Year-over-year, Grand Caravan sales jumped 89% to 6169 units.

With another 352 sales from the outgoing Chrysler Town & Country and incoming Chrysler Pacifica, 70% of the segment was owned by the Windsor, Ontario-built vans in May.

FCA's minivans increased their market share in part thanks to their own growth, but also because of a sharp decline in sales of the Toyota Sienna and flat sales from the Honda Odyssey and Kia Sedona.

Year-to-date, total Canadian MPV volume is up 15%, a gain of nearly 5000 units. The year-over-year figure is buoyed by poor performance from FCA's vans at this time last year – there was a plant shutdown which limited the Grand Caravan and Town & Country.

But there's also no denying that there are far more minivans leaving Canadian auto dealers in 2016 than there were in 2015.

Minivan Sales In America - May 2016 YTD

U.S. sales of minivans jumped 16% despite the fact that May 2016 was a shorter-than-normal sales month that saw the industry as a whole decline.

Year-over-year, the first five months of 2016 revealed increasing minivan strength. Sales are up 27% so far this year, a gain of 52,000 sales thanks largely to improvements at Dodge and Chrysler, where sales were in the toilet because of a plant shutdown at this time last year.

Presently with three nameplates, including the new Chrysler Pacifica, Fiat Chrysler's share of the U.S. minivan market grew to 43% in May 2016 from 27% in May 2015.

But the Honda Odyssey, the vehicle we call our own here at GCBC, topped the U.S. minivan sales leaderboard in May 2016. 

Mind you, it wasn't because of growth. The Toyota Sienna, the leader of the pack at this time last year, simply lost a greater percentage of its May volume.

Minivan Sales In Canada - November 2015 YTD

At the tail end of a difficult year in which the Dodge Grand Caravan's Windsor, Ontario, plant was temporarily shut down, sales are once again on the mend. November volume jumped 11% after October's 5% increase and September's 8% uptick. 

Combined, the Dodge Grand Caravan and its Chrysler Town & Country twin accounted for 69% of all minivans sold in Canada in November 2015, up from 67% in November 2014. In their own, more narrowly defined "full-size" category, the FCA vans owned 71% of the market, down from 73% in November 2014.

The most significant year-over-year gain in November was crafted by the Chrysler Town & Country. Kia Sedona sales jumped 73%; Toyota Sienna volume was up 53%.

But 2015 won't go down as a particularly healthy year for minivan sales, barring a more rapid rate of improvement in December. We'll know more about the future products coming out of Windsor when FCA unveils their new minivan strategy – and the van(s) themselves – in early 2016.
