Minivan Sales In America - June 2016 YTD

Minivan volume continues to rapidly expand after a challenging year in 2015 caused in large part by a plant shutdown at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' Windsor, Ontario, minivan factory.

But that shutdown occurred to enable the launch of the Chrysler Pacifica, which finally outsold its predecessor, the Chrysler Town & Country, in June 2016. Together, the Pacifica, its successor, and its successor long-running Dodge Grand Caravan twin – the best-selling minivan in America this year and in June – owned 47% of the U.S. minivan market in June 2016.

U.S. sales of the Toyota Sienna, 2015's calendar year leader, fell 4% in the first-half of 2016 and 12% in June, specifically. Set to be replaced shortly, the Honda Odyssey is on a minor upswing.

Kia Sedona volume continued to grow, but it remains a relatively low-volume player by the leaders' standards, even with June sales rising to the highest level yet for the new van. 

Only one in ten minivan customers chose a Sedona in June. Indeed, the Kia's market share declined, year-over-year.

Minivan Sales In America - May 2016 YTD

U.S. sales of minivans jumped 16% despite the fact that May 2016 was a shorter-than-normal sales month that saw the industry as a whole decline.

Year-over-year, the first five months of 2016 revealed increasing minivan strength. Sales are up 27% so far this year, a gain of 52,000 sales thanks largely to improvements at Dodge and Chrysler, where sales were in the toilet because of a plant shutdown at this time last year.

Presently with three nameplates, including the new Chrysler Pacifica, Fiat Chrysler's share of the U.S. minivan market grew to 43% in May 2016 from 27% in May 2015.

But the Honda Odyssey, the vehicle we call our own here at GCBC, topped the U.S. minivan sales leaderboard in May 2016. 

Mind you, it wasn't because of growth. The Toyota Sienna, the leader of the pack at this time last year, simply lost a greater percentage of its May volume.

Minivan Sales In America - November 2015 YTD

U.S. minivan sales rose 2% in November 2015, but with sales low through much of the year, it's within reason to believe that Americans will buy and lease fewer than 500,000 new minivans in calendar year 2015.

It would require a bad December for that outcome to transpire, admittedly. But minivan volume is down 9% in 2015, a loss of nearly 48,000 units over the course of 2015's first 11 months.

The Toyota Sienna has capitalized on poor performances from the Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan, vans built at FCA's Windsor, Ontario, plant which hosted a long shutdown earlier this year. The Sienna ranked first among minivans in November and in the first 11 months and will end 2015 as America's top minivan.

Combined, of course, the Chrysler/Dodge twins control a larger chunk of the market: 45% in November; 36% year-to-date. But that year-to-date figure is down from 49% in 2014's first eleven months, a period during which minivan sales jumped 6%.

U.S. sales of minivans tumbled 22% in May 2015, and it wasn't all down to the just-ended shutdown at FCA's Windsor, Ontario, plant where the Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan are built.

Granted, the sharp decreases reported by those Chrysler/Dodge twins enhanced the minivan market decline. But Honda Odyssey sales dropped slightly, too, as did sales of the discontinued Mazda 5 and the Nissan Quest.

The Toyota Sienna was therefore the best-selling minivan in America for a seventh consecutive month in May 2015 thanks to an 8% year-over-year increase. The Toyota outsold the Town & Country, Grand Caravan, Quest, and 5 combined, grabbing 32% of the America minivan market.

Minivan sales have tumbled in the United States in early 2015 largely due to the dropoff among Chrysler/Dodge vans after a plant shutdown to prep for a relaunch later this year.

Excluding those two vans, the Grand Caravan and Town & Country, shows that sales of competing minivans were up 7.3% in April; 12.3% year-to-date.

The Toyota Sienna's modest April growth helped out - it's the best-selling minivan in the country this year. But Kia's rapid rise continues unabated as the Sedona - not the most popular van by any means, but increasingly popular - jumped 443% last month. 

The FCA/Chrysler twins owned 49.3% of the U.S. minivan market during the first one-third of 2014. That figure is down to 32.2% this year; to 29.2% in April, specifically.

Minivan Sales In America - November 2014 YTD

The Toyota Sienna was the best-selling minivan in America in November 2014 as sales of the revamped-for-2015 Sienna rose 1.4% in a fast-falling minivan market. Segment-wide sales slid 6% compared with November 2013, and the Sienna's share of the category grew from 21.3% at this time last year to 23% in November 2014.

Chrysler's duo, the Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan, were down 29% and 8%, respectively. Their share of the minivan category fell from 50.6% last November to 43.4% in November 2014. 49.2% of the minivans sold in the United States during the first eleven months of 2014 were either Town & Countrys or Grand Caravans, the year-to-date leaders.

The minivan market's biggest mover and shaker of late, however, is not a top seller. Rather, the fifth-ranked Kia Sedona shot up 578% to 3538 units in November thanks to a complete redesign.
