June 2016 YTD U.S. SUV And Crossover Sales Rankings - Top 100 Best-Selling SUVs In America - Every SUV Ranked

A 10% expansion in the size of June 2016's U.S. SUV/crossover market added 55,000 sales to the American auto industry's total sales volume last month.

Year-to-date, through the first-half of 2016, U.S. sales of SUVs and crossovers are up by more than 241,000 units, an 8% increase.

All-new nameplates certainly help, but the bulk of the sector's growth stems from increased sales of already popular models. 

In June 2016, for example, only 2635 of the SUV/crossover sector's 55,000 additional sales were produced by vehicles that weren't on sale a year ago: Mazda CX-3 and Jaguar F-Pace. 

But the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, and Nissan Rogue – America's four top-selling utility vehicles – added 14,668 sales to the ledger.

Korean automakers also powered forward with a huge increase in sales of their four SUV nameplates. (The Hyundai Santa Fe and Santa Fe Sport's figures are combined by Hyundai into one model.) The Santa Fe, Kia Sorento, Hyundai Tucson, and Kia Sportage combined fo 46,205 sales in June 2016, a 74% increase from the 26,569 utility vehicles sold by Hyundai-Kia in June 2015. 

After accounting for 22% of the new vehicles sold by Hyundai-Kia's U.S. network in June 2015, the Santa Fe, Sorento, Tucson, and Sportage grabbed 36% of the conglomerate's U.S. volume in June 2016.

But by no means are the increasingly popular Hyundais and Kias the only utility vehicles to gain market share in 2016. Triple-digit percentage increases have been produced so far this year by the Volvo XC90 and BMW X1. The Mitsubishi Outlander, Jeep Compass, Audi Q7, Lincoln MKX, Lexus LX570, and Volkswagen Tiguan have all grown by more than 50% in the first-half of 2016.

May 2016 YTD U.S. SUV And Crossover Sales Rankings - Top 100 Best-Selling SUVs In America - Every SUV Ranked

As the U.S. auto industry slowed in May 2016 – largely because an abbreviated auto sales calendar featured two fewer selling days than it did a year ago – sales of SUVs and crossovers rose 2%. 

This gain of more than 14,000 sales was powered in no small part by the SUV-only Jeep brand, where sales grew by nearly 11,000 units thanks to big gains from the brand's three smallest models. The hugely affordable and fleet-friendly Patriot/Compass duo, together with the new Renegade, contributed 36% of Jeep's sales and added 13,480 sales to the Jeep ledger.

As a result, after claiming 13.7% of the U.S. SUV/crossover market in May 2015, Jeep's share of the sector jumped to 15.2% in May 2016. 

Not dissimilarly, the Toyota RAV4 increased its level of dominance, as well. As U.S. SUV/crossover sales grew 2%, RAV4 volume jumped 12%. 

Year-to-date, the RAV4 leads the second-ranked Honda CR-V by 9075 units. Rewind one year and the CR-V was nearly 11,000 sales ahead of the next-best-selling Chevrolet Equinox, and the RAV4 ranked a distant fourth. Now, Toyota's RAV4 Hybrid is taking the RAV4 nameplate to new heights.

15,476 RAV4 Hybrids were sold in America during the first five months of 2016, or better than one in ten RAV4s. Subtract those sales and the RAV4 ranks third in the sector. Alone, the RAV4 Hybrid outsells all but 50 SUV/crossover nameplates.

Hyundai also made significant inroads in the SUV/crossover sector in May. The Santa Fe, figures for which include two distinct vehicles, grew its May sales by 88% to 14,732 units. At the same time, Hyundai sold 7369 Tucsons, the Tucson's fourth consecutive 7K+ month. In 2015, the Tucson's best year ever, Hyundai USA averaged 5300 Tucson sales per month.

Meanwhile, two New SUV nameplates were added to the fleet in May. Jaguar began selling the F-Pace; Buick introduced its new Envision.
