Commercial Van Sales In America - June 2016 YTD

2016 Ford Transit green
Commercial van sales jumped 17% in the first-half of 2016 as growth in the established full-size cargo van sector exceeded the rate of growth in the burgeoning small commercial van sector.

Ford is the leader in both categories. The Transit, America's top-selling van overall and consequently the top-selling commercial van and therefore America's favourite full-size commercial van, generated 42% of all U.S. full-size commercial van sales.

Ford's Transit Connect, despite a 7% year-over-year decline midst the arrival of new competitors, owned 45% of its category.

Overall, Ford's market share among commercial vans in the United States held steady at 54% in the first-half of 2016, on par with the Blue Oval's achievement in the first-half of 2015.

General Motors is the next-largest player. GM's trio of vans account for slightly more than one-fifth of all commercial van sales in America.

FCA's Ram brand, Mercedes-Benz, and Nissan are similarly forceful entities further down the leaderboard, claiming 11%, 7%, and 8% of the segment, respectively.

In June, specifically, the three lower-volume brands produced nearly identical total commercial van sales: 3110 at Ram, 3085 at Mercedes-Benz, 3134 at Nissan. GM and Ford combined for 32,029 June commercial van sales in America.

As the U.S. auto industry struggled in the face of a shorter sales month, the commercial van sector posted a 5% year-over-year sales increase worth 2072 additional sales in May 2016.

Small commercial vans failed to gain any market share, however, as the real growth in the commercial van segment came from the Ford Transit and Ram ProMaster. The duo combined for 2330 more sales in May 2016 than in May 2015.

Commercial Van Sales In America - November 2015 YTD

2016 Ford Transit Connect black
A 63% year-over-year November 2015 U.S. sales increase among small commercial vans was powered by the inclusion of the Chevrolet City Express – only arriving at this time last year – as well as a modest Nissan NV200 increase, the not-on-sale-a-year-ago Ram ProMaster City, and the Ford Transit Connect's huge 94% improvement.

Despite the added competition, Ford still owned more than half the small commercial van market. Year-to-date, Ford has added 8743 Transit Connect sales over the course of 11 months.

Sadly, Mercedes-Benz continued to include sales of its new Metris van in the Sprinter's total for the second consecutive month. Mercedes-Benz is not an insignificant player in America's commercial van category, with 7.9% market share in November; 6.9% year-to-date.

Hopefully enough pressure will be applied to make them rethink their reporting decision.

In the meantime, total U.S. commercial van volume jumped 34% to more than 35,000 units in November, a huge leap forward worth an additional 9017 sales compared with November 2014. Year-to-date volume has increased by more than 57,000 sales.

2016 Mercedes-Benz Metris doors open
U.S. sales of commercial vans exploded in October 2015 with a 46% year-over-year increase to 36,471 units, an 11,517-unit improvement compared with October 2014.

The Ford Transit was once again the top-selling commercial van in America. The lingering E-Series contributed another 4036 sales to the Ford tally; the smaller Transit Connect jumped 44% to its highest level ever.

5877 Transit Connect sales translates to 65% market share in its small commercial van category. Ford's total share of the overall commercial van category increased from 44.2% in October 2014 to 52.8% in October 2015.

Mercedes-Benz began marketing its new Metris van, something of a tweener-sized interloper that slots above the Transit Connect but below Mercedes-Benz's own Sprinter.

Unfortunately, Mercedes-Benz is currently combining sales of its established Sprinter with the new Metris. Let's hope for a change.
