Top 20 Best-Selling SUVs In America - June 2016

The Toyota RAV4, America's top-selling SUV/crossover in each of 2016's first five months, surrendered its crown to a perennial favourite in June 2016.

 The Honda CR-V's 5% year-over-year increase to 29,615 units, despite the Toyota's 10% uptick, was more than enough to fend off the RAV4.

Closer challenges came from the Nissan Rogue and Ford Escape, both of which jumped by more than 20% to land within 612 units of the CR-V, America's best-selling utility vehicle in each of the last four years.

No premium brand vehicle managed to crack June's list of the 20 most popular utility vehicles in America. There were, however, five Jeeps, including the newest Renegade and the soon-to-be-replaced Patriot. The Patriot recorded its best month of June ever, with 12,050 sales, a 24% year-over-year increase. The Wrangler and Compass produced best-ever June results, as well, with the Wrangler claiming sixth spot among utility vehicles in June.
Honda, Subaru, Toyota, and Hyundai-Kia all positioned two nameplates in the top 20. Twelve of the 20 top sellers sold more often this June than last. Among the most popular SUVs/crossovers in America in June, the Subaru Forester and Jeep Cherokee declines were worst.

Top 20 Best-Selling Cars In America - June 2016

For the fourth time this year and the ninth time in the last year, the Toyota Camry was America's best-selling car in June.

 Despite a 13% year-over-year decrease valued at a loss of more than 4800 sales and a 11% increase from the second-ranked Honda Civic worth nearly 3100 sales, the Camry outlasted the Civic with a 751-unit margin of victory.

Though Camry sales plunged, five of America's six best-selling cars posted year-over-year improvements. Indeed, among the top 20 best-selling cars, year-over-year increases weren't terrible rare, a healthy sign given the passenger car market's recent downturns. 

11 of the 20 most popular cars in America in June 2016 recorded year-over-year improvements. Through the first five months of 2016, only nine of the 20 top-selling cars in America were on the upswing.

 June's best improvements belonged to the Nissan Versa and Chevrolet Impala, both of which jumped by more than 40%. The Nissan Sentra and aforementioned Civic both posted double-digit percentage gains, as well.

Minivan volume continues to rapidly expand after a challenging year in 2015 caused in large part by a plant shutdown at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' Windsor, Ontario, minivan factory.

But that shutdown occurred to enable the launch of the Chrysler Pacifica, which finally outsold its predecessor, the Chrysler Town & Country, in June 2016. Together, the Pacifica, its successor, and its successor long-running Dodge Grand Caravan twin – the best-selling minivan in America this year and in June – owned 47% of the U.S. minivan market in June 2016.

U.S. sales of the Toyota Sienna, 2015's calendar year leader, fell 4% in the first-half of 2016 and 12% in June, specifically. Set to be replaced shortly, the Honda Odyssey is on a minor upswing.

Kia Sedona volume continued to grow, but it remains a relatively low-volume player by the leaders' standards, even with June sales rising to the highest level yet for the new van. 

 Only one in ten minivan customers chose a Sedona in June. Indeed, the Kia's market share declined, year-over-year.

Top 11 Best-Selling Pickup Trucks In America - June 2016 YTD

2017 Honda Ridgeline
U.S. sales of pickup trucks jumped 13% in June 2016, more than doubling the rate of growth achieved by the eleven truck nameplates.

 Powered by the best-selling Ford F-Series' 29% year-over-year improvement, full-size truck sales rose 10% to 186,216 units in June, equal to 83% of the overall pickup truck market.

Small/midsize trucks, finally helped along by the new Honda Ridgeline after a long hiatus for America's lone unibody pickup truck, posted a 32% increase to 38,894 units. 

Through the first-half of 2016, small/midsize trucks – led by the Toyota Tacoma – are up 17%, improving their market share from 2015's first-half 15.1% to 16.5% in 2016's first six months.
