Top 20 Worst-Selling Vehicles In Canada - June 2016

2016 Chrysler 300
As of June 2016's Canadian worst sellers list, we've added a new formula to better enable you to see the recent results of vehicles trending in the wrong direction. Not only can you see the 20 lowest-volume vehicles in Canada and the 20 vehicles declining the most rapidly on a year-over-year percentage scale. Now you can also see a list of higher-volume vehicles which are also declining rapidly.

Canada Vehicle Sales Rankings By Model - June 2016 YTD

In June, the Chrysler 300's 58% year-over-year decline topped the new list. One other car, the increasingly troubled Volkswagen Passat also lost more than half its volume. In total, ten cars which attracted more than 250 sales (the Canadian minimum for this new worst sellers tabulation) plunged by more than 30%, a collective loss from those ten vehicles of  more than 4200 sales.

Those ten vehicles – 300, Passat, GLC, Taurus, 3-Series, Flex, Jetta, Sonic, Cruze, Focus – owned 6.6% of the Canadian new vehicle market in June 2015. That figure fell to 3.9% in June 2016 as the market surged to an all-time June record.

There were a number of mainstream vehicles which were so unpopular that they didn't qualify for the new format. Dodge Dart, Nissan Titan, and Ford Fiesta.

Year-to-date, Canadian sales of the Chrysler 300 are down 17% to 2778 units. FCA Canada says 412 of the 2778 300s sold were 300Cs.

Top 20 Worst-Selling Vehicles In Canada - May 2016

As often as not, GCBC's list of Canada's 20 worst-selling new vehicles is stuffed with discontinued models or vehicles with formal cancellation notices or vehicles on hiatus as they await replacement.

In May 2016, however, a large number of continuing nameplates lost more than half their May volume. As many sales were pulled forward into April 2016, the best month ever for the Canadian auto industry, and as May 2016 was an abbreviated sales month with two fewer selling days than May 2015, sales of many new vehicles were more than chopped in half, year-over-year.

Canada Vehicle Sales Rankings By Model - May 2016 YTD

A handful of those vehicles didn't even make it into the top 20. The Kia Forte, Lexus LS, Cadillac ELR, Lincoln MKT, and Volvo V60 all lost half their May volume last month. But the declines reported by the Dodge Charger, Chevrolet Cruze, Dodge Dart, Smart Fortwo, Fiat 500, and numerous others were even more harsh.

In some of these instances, one month has nothing to do with a trend. Buick Enclave volume, for example, was up 14% through the first-third of 2016. Chevrolet Corvette sales had risen 8% through the end of April.

In other cases, May's dreadful results were just a continuation of the norm. The Fiat 500's Canadian sales fell 68% through the first five months of 2016, a drop of 925 sales so far this year. Fiat sold 8474 500s in Canada in 2012 but is on track to sell fewer than 1100 in 2016, an 87% decline. The Chevrolet Cruze's transition into second-gen form is taking longer than anticipated. Over the last six months, Cruze volume is down 28%.

Top 20 Worst-Selling Vehicles In Canada - April 2016

2016 Hyundai Sonata 2.0T
April 2016 was the third month in the last four in which the Chrysler 200 appeared on Canada's list of the 20 worst-selling new vehicles in Canada. April was the third consecutive month that the Hyundai Sonata appeared on the list.

Canada Vehicle Sales Rankings By Model - April 2016 YTD

Year-to-date, the duo lost 5439 sales in the first four months of 2016, a sharp decline for cars which recently competed at the top of the midsize segment.

But April, specifically, was a dreadful month for midsize cars in Canada. Segment-wide, every car – fom the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord to the Mazda 6, Volkswagen Passat, and the two aforementioned worst sellers – posted fewer sales than in April 2015. As a result, midsize car volume tumbled 30% in Canada in April 2016.

But the 200 and Sonata were the worst offenders. Setting them aside, the midsize category was down "just" 19% last month, not 30%.
