Leading the way in April was the Acura RDX, sales of which jumped 49% to 5905 units, the best month ever for the entry-level Acura crossover. Sales of direct and indirect rivals at Audi (Q5), Infiniti (QX50), Land Rover (Discovery Sport), Lexus (NX), Lincoln (MKC), and Mercedes-Benz (GLC) all grew at an above-market-average rate, as well.

Acura's MDX didn't fare quite so well in March or through the first four months of 2016. Year-to-date, MDX volume is down 14%. Sales of its Honda sibling, the Pilot, are down 17% this year. Nevertheless, no three-row premium brand utility in America sells more often than the MDX.

No premium utility vehicle of any sort sells more often than the Lexus RX, America's top-selling premium brand vehicle overall. April RX sales jumped 29%, a gain of nearly 2000 sales, year-over-year.

GCBC isn't here to break down segments, an impossible task for any group, but to display sales data for the sake of comparison. The more ways sales data can be displayed, the better. This explains you'll see the XC70 listed with luxury cars as well as with SUVs and crossovers and the Touareg with luxury SUVs and mainstream SUVs... because readers have wanted it both ways. You can always find the sales results for EVERY vehicle and form your own competitive sets by using the All Vehicle Rankings posts.

Large Luxury SUV Sales In America - April 2016 YTD

2016 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class
One month ago, we wrote about the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class's U.S. sales slowdown in advance of the big SUV's transition into GLS-Class form.

Now, the transition is underway, and GL volume – now known as GLS volume – shot up 36% to 2991 units in April 2016, a 249% increase compared with the GL's March doldrums.

Cadillac's Escalade, riding on two wheelbases as the Escalade and long-wheelbase Escalade ESV, pipped the big Benz by 16 reported units in April. Momentum, however, is not on the Cadillac's side.

Producing significantly less volume, momentum is on the side of the Toyota twins: Land Cruiser and Lexus LX570. Both will remain rare not only by the standards of the U.S. auto industry's popular nameplates but also compared with the norms in this category.

But both the Toyota and Lexus are significantly more common in 2016 than they were in 2014.

Combined sales of the duo are up by 1082 units through the first one-third of 2016.

Midsize SUV Sales In America - April 2016 YTD

Booming Ford Explorer sales. Healthy Toyota Highlander sales growth. Increasing Dodge Durango volume. Rapid Toyota 4Runner sales expansion.

Welcome to 2002.

Or rather, 2016.

Ford sold more than 23,000 Explorers in the United States in April 2016, the third consecutive month in which more than 20,000 Explorers were sold; the tenth month in the last year in which more than 20,000 Explorers were sold.

The Toyota Highlander's year-over-year volume has increased in five consecutive months. 2016 is on track to be the seventh consecutive year of Highlander sales growth.

The Dodge Durango is no longer the body-on-frame SUV which routinely attracts more than 100,000 buyers per year. But Dodge is on pace to sell more than 80,000 Durangos in 2016, the highest figure since 2005.

The Toyota 4Runner, meanwhile, does resemble the Explorer, Highlander, or Durango under the skin. The 4Runner is a true blue body-on-frame sport-utility vehicle, the kind of vehicle which long ago went out of fashion, right? In 2016, 4Runner sales are on track to rise to the highest level since 1999.

GCBC isn't here to break down segments, an impossible task for any group, but to display sales data for the sake of comparison. The more ways sales data can be displayed, the better. This explains why you'll see the Outback and Venza here but also with midsize cars, too, and the pricey FJ Cruiser and Xterra with smaller utilities and the Volkswagen Touareg with luxury SUVs... because readers have wanted it both ways.
