June 2016 YTD U.S. Passenger Car Sales Rankings - Top 156 Best-Selling Cars In America - Every Car Ranked

U.S. sales of passenger cars fell 8.5% in June 2016, dragging the first-half figure down to 7.9% as top-selling cars from Toyota, Ford, and Chevrolet pull the sector down despite major gains from a handful of rival top sellers.

The second-best-selling Honda Civic jumped 20% in the first-half of 2016, a U.S. year-over-year sales gain of nearly 32,000 units. But the 45,147 additional sales garnered by the Honda Civic and Honda Accord – not to mention the 17,777 additional sales from the Nissan Altima and Sentra – are cancelled out by sharp losses from America's perennial best-selling car, the Toyota Camry, and even worse declines from the Ford Focus, Hyundai Elantra, and Chevrolet Cruze, among others.

Consumers are quickly veering away from cars into SUVs/crossovers, a change that's particularly noteworthy at Toyota. While Camry volume has fallen 7%, or 16,056 units, the similarly priced Toyota RAV4 – America's most popular utility vehicle – produced 22,325 extra sales.

This small but applicable example helps explain the market's overall rise in 2016. After record-setting auto sales in 2015, the U.S. auto industry is projected to end 2016 at an even higher level.

Cars are declining, but SUVs/crossovers and pickup trucks and vans are all growing to such an extent that manufacturers' overall volume isn't sorely affected by the car decline.

Through the first six months of 2016, the Camry leads the second-ranked Honda Civic by 9920 sales. The Civic leads the next-best-selling compact car, the Toyota Corolla, by a smaller 7647-unit margin. The 13th-ranked Nissan Versa is America's leading subcompact, more than 33,000 sales ahead of the Hyundai Accent.

The Ford Mustang's 15th position places it far ahead of all other sporty cars. Mercedes-Benz's C-Class, though down 14% year-to-date, is 4329 sales ahead of the BMW 3-Series; nearly 15,000 sales behind the combined 3-Series/4-Series duo.

May 2016 YTD U.S. Passenger Car Sales Rankings - Top 154 Best-Selling Cars In America - Every Car Ranked

Yes, May was an abbreviated sales month in 2016, with only 24 selling days, compared with 26 in May 2015. But that only accounts for an 8% drop in new car sales last month.

In reality, May 2016 passenger car sales volume tumbled 16%, a loss of nearly 120,000 car sales.

Only five of America's 20 most popular cars posted year-over-year sales gains in May. The Honda Civic, America's best-selling car in April and second-ranked car in May and year-to-date, posted a 3% increase to 35,396 units, 1520 sales behind the sector-leading Toyota Camry.

The new Chevrolet Malibu's 13% uptick helped secure the 'Bu's position as America's seventh-best-selling car, a notable turnaround for a car which ranked 12th at this time a year ago.

The Nissan Versa, America's best-selling subcompact car, posted a 20% year-over-year sales increase. U.S. sales of the Dodge Charger and 20th-ranked Kia Forte also moved northward.

But the passenger car sector is slowing as consumers move away from cars such as the Chrysler 200, Volkswagen Passat, BMW 3-Series, and Honda Fit toward vehicles such as the Jeep Cherokee, Toyota RAV4, BMW X3, and Honda HR-V. 

Through the first five months of 2016, car sales in America have decreased by 250,000 units. That's right, compared with the first five months of 2015, car sales this year are down by a quarter million.

Yet industry-wide auto sales are up by more than 80,000 units.

May welcomed one new car nameplate to the fleet. Jaguar USA began selling their new entry-level XE sedan (and their new F-Pace SUV). 598 Jaguar XEs were sold in May, enough to make the car America's 128th-best-selling car through the early part of 2016.

April 2016 YTD U.S. Passenger Car Sales Rankings - Top 152 Best-Selling Cars In America - Every Car Ranked

Sales of passenger cars dropped 6% in America in April 2016, a year-over-year drop of nearly 39,000 units. 

Through the first four months of 2016, U.S. car sales are down by 130,000 units as car buyers increasingly become car buyers of SUVs and crossovers.

Yet during the first one-third of 2016, car dealers are more likely to sell Honda Civics, Nissan Altimas, Honda Accords Nissan Sentras, Chevrolet Malibus, and Hyundai Sonatas. The nine most popular cars in America have increased their collective volume by 10%.

In other words, the most popular cars in America are even more popular this year than they were last year.

They're stealing more market share, growing their sales more rapidly than the SUV/crossover sector, and making life even more difficult for other cars which were already not that popular.

Honda, for instance, has grown its car volume by 13% this year even as the brand's most popular utility vehicle – the Honda CR-V, America's best-selling SUV/CUV in each of the last  four years – has fallen 2%, as Pilot volume slid 17%.

At Nissan, car sales are up 11% because of the Altima's 4% gain, a doubling of Maxima sales, and the Sentra's 21% increase into the upper-tier of compact cars. 

The Chevrolet Malibu, meanwhile, was America's 13th-best-selling car during the first four months of 2015. But the new Malibu has shot up the leaderboard, rising to eighth place in early 2016 as a result of a 34% year-over-year increase in volume.
