Large SUV Sales In Canada - June 2016 YTD

General Motors' quartet of volume brand, pickup truck-based full-size SUVs recorded a 161% year-over-year sales increase to 1308 units in June 2016.

GM's Chevrolet and GMC twin sets owned 81% of their category in June thanks to the sudden spike in sales. Don't expect to see such massive increases continue. Do expect General Motors to continue as the controller of the relatively small full-size SUV category, both in the United States (where the segment is far more consequential) and in Canada.

In addition to the 4681 copies of the Suburban, Tahoe, Yukon, and Yukon XL sold in the first-half of 2016, General Motors Canada also sold 1253 Escalades and Escalade ESVs through the Cadillac dealer network.

For the Chevrolet Suburban, June's 265 sales were the highest achieved by the Suburban since May 2010. 

June was the first time since August 2014 that Tahoe sales climbed past 300 units. 

Yukon sales reached a 70-month high; Yukon XL volume rose to the highest level since May 2014.

After sliding 5% in calendar year 2015, U.S. sales of full-size, truck-based, volume brand SUVs recovered well in the first-half of 2016.

The leaders of the pack, and we do mean that in the plural sense, have lost market share, however. GM's quartet combined for a 4% uptick in the first six months of 2016, but their share of the sector slid from an all-conquering 74% in the first six months of 2015 to a still rather dominant 72% in 2016.

Ford is the big mover and shaker. While claiming a far less substantial 20% of the sector through the end of June, Expedition sales (which include both long and regular-wheelbase variants) are up 33%, and rose 86% in June, specifically.

Nissan's Armada is entering its first replacement phase. 

The new Armada is the global Nissan Patrol, a vehicle we've known here, and will continue to know, as the Infiniti QX80 on the premium end of the ledger. 

This explains much of the Armada's harsh decline in the early part of 2016.

Thanks to a big month from the Ford Expedition, GMC Yukon, and best-selling Chevrolet Tahoe – and despite anticipated declines from their rivals – U.S. sales of full-size SUVs rose 1% in May 2016, an impressive result given the short sales month an industry-wide decline.

General Motors owned 71.6% of the category in the U.S. in May 2016, down only slightly from 72.0% in May 2015. But it was the Ford Expedition's 22% year-over-year increase produced the real shake-up in the category in May.

Indeed, on year-to-date terms, Expedition volume is up by 3420 units through the first five months of 2016. Segment-wide sales are up 2% this year.

Nissan Armada sales plunged 47% in May 2016 as Nissan readies the transition between old Titan-based Armada and new Nissan Patrol-based Armada. 

Familiar with the Infiniti QX80? Reduce the luxury content, and there's your new Armada. Infiniti sold 1424 such QX80s in May. Lincoln sold 851 Expedition-based Navigators. Total Cadillac Escalade volume rose 11% to 2943 units.

Canadian sales of full-size, volume brand, truck-based SUVs jumped 22% in May 2016 as a success follow-up to the early part of the year. Large SUV volume was up 26% through the first-third of 2016 thanks to sales gains from every member of the field.

That trait didn't hold true during the month of May. The previous top seller, Chevrolet's Tahoe, slid 1.5% to 196 units, second-best in class. Sales of the outdated Toyota Sequoia fell 6%, a loss of three units. The Nissan Armada, transitioning to a Nissan Patrol platform already used by the Infiniti QX80, tumbled 65%.

GM Canada continued to hold court in the full-size SUV category, claiming 58% market share in May. 

But the Ford Expedition shot up 79% to 416 units. The Expedition, you'll recall, includes sales of both the regular and long-wheelbase full-size Ford SUVs. 

Not only does GM split their sales across multiple models, but the different wheelbases produce different names: Suburban and Tahoe at Chevrolet; Yukon and Yukon XL at GMC.

Ford sold 4521 Expeditions in the United States in April 2016, a 22-month high for Ford's biggest SUV.

General Motors' market share remains more than impressive in the U.S. full-size SUV segment, despite the 4.5% decline from the class-leading Chevrolet Tahoe in April. 

73% of the segment's sales were produced by GM's foursome: Suburban, Tahoe, Yukon, and Yukon XL. But that was down from 77% in April 2015 and 74% in March 2016. 

GM also sold 3007 Cadillac Escalades and Escalade ESVs in April. Ford Motor Company's Expedition-based Lincoln Navigator was up 15% to 1060 units.

The Ford Expedition topped the category in April thanks to a 37% year-over-year increase to 263 units. But General Motors, with four direct Expedition rivals, owned 65% of the category.

Nissan Armada sales plunged 53% from its April 2015 total of 104 units. Nissan is prepping the launch of a new Armada, based not on the Titan but on the global Nissan Patrol, which already serves as the foundation for the Infiniti QX80.
