Large SUV Sales In America - June 2016 YTD

2015 Ford Expedition red
After sliding 5% in calendar year 2015, U.S. sales of full-size, truck-based, volume brand SUVs recovered well in the first-half of 2016.

The leaders of the pack, and we do mean that in the plural sense, have lost market share, however. GM's quartet combined for a 4% uptick in the first six months of 2016, but their share of the sector slid from an all-conquering 74% in the first six months of 2015 to a still rather dominant 72% in 2016.

Ford is the big mover and shaker. While claiming a far less substantial 20% of the sector through the end of June, Expedition sales (which include both long and regular-wheelbase variants) are up 33%, and rose 86% in June, specifically.

Nissan's Armada is entering its first replacement phase.

The new Armada is the global Nissan Patrol, a vehicle we've known here, and will continue to know, as the Infiniti QX80 on the premium end of the ledger.

This explains much of the Armada's harsh decline in the early part of 2016.

2017 Nissan Armada front grille
Thanks to a big month from the Ford Expedition, GMC Yukon, and best-selling Chevrolet Tahoe – and despite anticipated declines from their rivals – U.S. sales of full-size SUVs rose 1% in May 2016, an impressive result given the short sales month an industry-wide decline.

General Motors owned 71.6% of the category in the U.S. in May 2016, down only slightly from 72.0% in May 2015. But it was the Ford Expedition's 22% year-over-year increase produced the real shake-up in the category in May.

Indeed, on year-to-date terms, Expedition volume is up by 3420 units through the first five months of 2016. Segment-wide sales are up 2% this year.

General Motors' market share remains more than impressive in the U.S. full-size SUV segment, despite the 4.5% decline from the class-leading Chevrolet Tahoe in April.

73% of the segment's sales were produced by GM's foursome: Suburban, Tahoe, Yukon, and Yukon XL. But that was down from 77% in April 2015 and 74% in March 2016.

GM also sold 3007 Cadillac Escalades and Escalade ESVs in April. Ford Motor Company's Expedition-based Lincoln Navigator was up 15% to 1060 units.

2015 Nissan Armada
General Motors quartet of volume brand, full-size, truck-based SUVs failed to match last year's sales pace during the first ten months of 2015, but sales of the Suburban, Tahoe, Yukon, and Yukon XL rose 4.4% to 19,495 units in November 2015.

This produced market share of 80.4%, up from 75.1% in November 2014, as sales of the GMC duo jumped 26%.

It remains true that, as SUVs and crossovers take ever larger chunks out of the U.S. auto industry's passenger car volume, this group of formerly high-volume players are playing an increasingly minor role.

Two utility vehicles, the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V, generated more U.S. sales activity in November than these seven SUVs combined.

The Chevrolet Tahoe was America's top-selling full-size SUV nameplate in October despite a 16% year-over-year decrease to 6624 sales, a 1288-unit decline. The Ford Expedition – sales of which include the regular and long-wheelbase versions – ranked second. Sales rose 5.5% in October but Expedition volume is down 5.5% so far this year.

Segment-wide volume is also lower in 2015 than it was during the first ten months of 2014. At this time last year, the GM quartet was still noteworthy for the freshness of their redesigns.

Consumers are still flocking to SUVs and crossovers, but these six nameplates account for 4.4% of the total number of utility vehicles sold in America this year.

Large SUV Sales In America - May 2015 YTD

2011 Toyota Sequoia
GM's full-size volume brand SUVs haven't been able to match last year's outrageous launch pace, and as a result, the large SUV segment tumbled in May 2015, an 18% drop following up on April's 13% decline.

The Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe and their twins from GMC, the Yukon and Yukon XL, collectively slid 21% in May 2015, a drop of 4760 sales compared with May 2014.

Even factoring in the big gains achieved by the Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV - which were later to launch last year – GM's group of six, profit-generating SUVs were down 19% in May 2015. The group is up 15% year-to-date, but much of that growth occurred in the early portion of the year, a period with which the comparisons were bound to appear more favourable.

In the end, because of the Ford Expedition's rapid decline, the segment is turned on its head. Sales of the Detroit band of brothers fell sharply in May 2015; the Nissan Titan and Toyota Sequoia were boosted. Granted, those two U.S.-built, Japanese contenders earned only 11% of the category's May volume.
